Title: Chimp2618
Post by: Bocasean on January 28, 2013, 12:18:00 AM
I'm sorry to comment on such a buried thread, but I've been successfully softmodding and cloning new hard drives to the Xbox for 2 years now, and up until recently I've never had any problems.  I'm hoping that someone can steer me in the right direction.

I use Chimp (thanks to Idotsfan for creating it!) and I exclusively use WD 80g hard drives.  I've successfully cloned over 85 Xboxs using the same method, but for the past 2 months I've been having issues.

Chimp loads, I am able to swap the cables, the master/slave tabs are set as they've always been, etc.  Once I'm in the menu, I check to make sure that the 80g drive is recognized with the "Scan physical IDE devices" option, then I clone the C partition and the E partition as I've always done.

I then lock the drive from motherboard and shutdown the system.

This is what I have always done and, usually, it works without problem.  I will disconnect the splitter, set the newly-cloned 80g drive to Master, and hook it up as the old drive once was.  At this point, I turn the Xbox on a again, and as it's booting, I always eject the Chimp disc while the flubber is still showing on screen, having the disc drive closed before the flubber finishes.

At this point, when everything is working normally and successfully, the UnleashX symbol pops up on screen and, shortly thereafter, the UnleashX menu loads.  The new hard drive is a success.

Sadly, for the past 2 months, I've gone through 6 different Xboxs and at least 10 hard drives and, whenever I turn the Xbox on with the new 80g drive installed, it goes to the "Chinese Screen" as I call it.  It's the error screen that says to Call Customer Service in many different languages.  In essence, this hard drive is toast and I just wasted money.  Throughout the past couple years, this has happened sporadically, but I've simply chalked it up to a bad hard drive in the lot and moved on.  Sometimes, an Xbox will burn through 3 or 4 hard drives and I'll give up on it.  This has only happened 6 or 7 times in the 80-plus that I've cloned.  Lately, though, this has happened with every Xbox and hard drive that I've tried.

What can I do?  Why does it sometimes work and sometimes not?  Do I need to do more in Chimp after I have installed the new drive?  Is it a hard drive problem or an Xbox problem with certain models?

I'm at a loss.

Damn. This program is sick! I just ran it on my v1.3 just to see how it worked and everything. Man, it's thorough and very user friendly. I definitely look forward to upgrading my HDD with it.

I've started on a remake of chimp26 on a newer 2.6 kernel: 2.6.18 Here's a preview of the main menu:

IPB Image

1. It now works on xbox 1.6 on-screen (instead of telnet) although there is an ugly blinking cursor which is a slight nuisance  dry.gif

2. More menu options: displaying hdd security status, backup of eeprom, reboot, shutdown.

3. Ability to use master passwords: TEAMASSEMBLY or XBOXSCENE on the slave hdd on DVD IDE connection.

4. Shares the same code base as LPartx hence have a configurable network setting and formatting of extended partitions and drop to shell option. It now uses Gentoox Loader for xbox 1.6 support instead of xbeboot.

5. Experimental(Read:dangerous) support for FATX (16K,32K,64K clusters) partition mounting.

Should be ready for a beta release soon.

Wow, what a coincidence. I came here today with a question about this very subject.

I'm trying to telnet into my v1.6 box, and of course I'm having all the usual problems that apparently everyone else has.

I set up my box the way I "think" I'm supposed to -- set to STATIC, port to 23, HTTP Proxy, etc

I'm able to ping to it, and I'm even able to telnet into it before I use chimp, but when I run chimp and try to access it I get the usual "unable to open..."java script:emoticon(':grr:',%20'smid_11')

Now I see some hope on the horizon!

I'll patiently wait with my fingers crossed and check back (every 10 minutes!) to see how you're coming along with this.

I'm sure glad there a so many people out there smarter than me!java script:emoticon(':jester:',%20'smid_13')

Thanks [/u]BIG TIME ldotsfan!!

Original chimp doesn't care what IP address you statically set your box to - it ALWAYS uses 192.168.0.3 - that's why you can't connect to it........

Give your PC a static address in the same range (192.168.0.x) and it will work.

By the look of it this new version will allow you to change that. smile.gif

Post by: unclebree on June 29, 2010, 11:09:00 AM
I did set the IP to STATIC and set it to 192.168.0.5 (The guide said anything higher than .0.4).  I then tried to telnet to it using 192.168.0.3 (numerous times), and I just couldn't get into it. (Not even pinging to it.) But, when I would let it get it's own IP (192.168.254.2), I could ping to it and even telnet into it, just not when Chimp was running.

I sure hope this new version will get rid of that.

Best of luck to you on finishing it, not just for me but for what I'm sure are many others!

Try it again, and when you've set your PC IP address to 192.168.0.5, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, open a command window on your PC and type ipconfig, hit return, and see what it says.
Title: Chimp2618
Post by: unclebree on June 29, 2010, 12:52:00 PM
Okay, I tired that and same thing. I opened my connections and set it to assign IP 192.168.0.5 and subnet 255.255.255.0 (actually the subnet did that automatically when I set the IP.)

Then I opened the command prompt, typed ipconfig, and it threw out some stuff about media disconnected (I'm assuming this is my DirecTV, which was set up on media share), and showed the new IP and subnet.

I then turned on the Xbox and telnet(ed?) to it and saw in the command prompt "FTP ready to UnleashX," or something to that nature. So, I closed the command prompt and started Chimp on the Xbox -- got my usual green screen -- and opened the command prompt again and typed telnet 192.168.0.3, and got the usual "could not open port...."

I know this isn't supposed to be this difficult, and there's probably some little something that I'm just not getting right, but I'll be damned if I can figure it out.

Thanks for trying to help though. I guess I'll just have to wait on this new update to Chimp and hope like hell it gets me past the telnet part at least. (Then I'll probably just get stuck at a new hurdle, but at least it'll be a new problem and not the same one over and over.)

You say that when you let your PC "get it's own IP", it automatically came up with the address 192.168.254.2 - this would imply that there's a DHCP server somewhere in your network, which I'd assume is a router (like a DSL/cable combo-router box for eg).  Is your PC wired to the console through this router box?
Title: Chimp2618
Post by: unclebree on June 29, 2010, 09:20:00 PM
Yes, there's a wireless router, but when I couldn't telnet into the Xbox I disconnected it and used a wired ethernet port instead, but still wasn't able to telnet in when Chimp was running. However, I could telnet to the box when it was at it's dashboard.

change DHCP on you router to 192.168.0.X instead of 192.168.252.X
start DHCP at .50

restore if wanted when done

What about when I disconnect the router and use an ethernet port instead? 'Cause when I do, I'm able to ping, and even telnet into the box, just not when Chimp is running.

I wouldn't think the settings on the router should matter if I'm not even using it. I went into the router to change the settings, but once I got in, I was afraid I'd screw something up and mess up my whole home network.

I think I'll just have to wait and hope ldotsfan comes up with this new update. I guess I can "try" and be patient. (Heck, after being married to the same woman for more than 25 years you'd think patience would come natural to me!)

Thanks for ideas, though.

I'm still working on it:
1. The cloning function. Untested.
2. DHCP. Not working. Not needed for xbox 1.6 since you can now use the tool on-screen with the controller but a good-to-have feature. Static IP works though.

I can release something though if you are keen to test the cloning which may be broken.

Thanks ldotsfan, but I think I'd be better off waiting 'til you have a more stable version.

Right now if something were to go wrong I wouldn't know if it was me or the program. (More than likely, it'd be me!)

Actually, right now I'm waiting on a SATA to IDE converter so that maybe I can use XBOXHDM on the drive.

(Does anyone know if this'll work?)

Oh well, at least with this converter coming in the mail and with ldotsfan update to Chimp, it looks like my options might be improving.

I've already burned the ISO, but the only way I could hook up the new HDD was to use the IDE cable connected to the DVD drive, which I'm sure you all know doesn't work. (And now I know it too -- lol.)

In the meantime, Ill wait and let you cross all your i's and dot all your t's and maybe get this thing up and running. Like I said earlier, I'm sure there are a LOT of people that'll be happy as a pig in  -- stuff -- when you get this running smooth.

2. DHCP. Not working. Not needed for xbox 1.6 since you can now use the tool on-screen with the controller but a good-to-have feature. Static IP works though.

1. Fixed DHCP with a kernel recompile.
2. Cloning is working for C and E partitions. Figured out a method to parse the partition table from shell script. This will pave the way to extended partition cloning. Have used Pipe Viewer instead to display progress status. For real world statistics, I reached 15MB/s which works out to under 10 minutes for a stock 8Gb hdd on a 1.6 . Uncertain if other hdds have the same/better/worst performance.
The new version has ETA, throughput and percentage completed display. Example:
CODE

51.7GB 0:28:52 [30.6MB/s] [====>                              ] 17% ETA 2:17:35

3. Will need to tidy things up and remaster initrd. Will also need to test that the cloned hdd actually boots  dry.gif.

Post by: ldotsfan on July 04, 2010, 08:50:00 AM
Testing continued.

1. Cloned C and E just under 6 minutes to another hdd. This hdd booted fine. X,Y,Z partitions need not be cloned so that saved some time. 15MB/s.
2. Once hdd was locked and unlocked in the same session, throughput dropped to one tenth of 15MB/s, ie 1.5MB/s when cloning was repeated. I have no idea why  dry.gif
3. The syntax for extended partition cloning proved to be correct but I didn't have the patience to wait out for the process to complete tongue.gif I tested only F partially.
4. I had enough of hotswapping of the slave hdd for the day  tongue.gif
5. Unlocking with master passwords for both TEAMASSEMBLY and XBOXSCENE for slave hdd were Ok.
6. Due to 1.6's overscan problem - this is afterall still a Linux based tool, you have to press A on the controller once once the cloning commenced to actually see the progress update.
7. Left thumb stick to toggle the checkbox and radio button options.

Will release this in the next few days on sourceforge.

Grab the files from here

Brief Usage Instructions:
1. Unzip the files to E:\Apps\chimp2618 folder.
2. Copy linuxboot.cfg to E drive root folder. Amend contents if you didn't install accordingly to the folder  in step 1.
3. Ensure that the target hdd 's jumper is on Cable Select or Slave mode. Supply power to hdd with a molex connector.
4. Hotswap DVD IDE cable to target hdd before launching default.xbe (which is actually Gentoox Loader  a Cromwell derivative) - ie do this step while xbox is still executing dashboard of your choice, while in EvoX/UnleashX/XBMC etc.
5. Original MS controller is needed. Should work with Composite Video, S-Video and Component connections. Need to edit linuxboot.cfg though.
6. Press A button on controller to activate console and see the menu. This works on xbox 1.6 as well (that's my test xbox version)
7. Navigate with D-pad. Click on either thumb-stick to check/uncheck checkbox. A button to confirm choices.
8. Yes/No option at critical sections to confirm actions.
9. Telnet is available, xbox will connect to DHCP if available.

If you encounter any bugs, please report back.

Hi ldotsfan,

Well, I finally got froggy and decided to give this a try. I loaded into the E/apps folder, and then tried it first without the hotswapping to see if it would run, and I got a screen with "CD/DVD - Web Boot - Net Boot - Advanced."

I looked around in all of them, and didn't see anything like the menu you showed in your first post. (To clone the HDD)

I then went ahead and did the hotswap -- which seemed to go all right -- and then ran the app Chimp 2618 and everything seemed to go pretty good. I had basically the same menu, minus the CD/DVD (which I'm assuming is because the CD/DVD was now another HDD), but I still couldn't find the menu that allows me to clone the master HDD.

I know it picked up both HDD's (and I DID have the second HDD, the 500GB one, set on Slave) because I was able to view the passwords for both of the HDD's.

So I'm guessing that everything is working fine, it's just that I don't know how to use it. Are there some steps I'm missing to get into that menu that you showed in your first post?

Thanks, ~Rich~

I think based on your description, the xbox is still in the Gentoox Loader menu and hasn't even started the kernel.

You're right, I did miss that step. It's possible that I subconsciously missed it because I had no idea what you meant.

Are you saying that I need to take the linuxboot.cfg file out of the Chimp 2618 folder, and put it directly in the E folder? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but it's only because I am one.

Seriously though, I'm like 2 I.Q. points away from slobbering all over this keyboard as I type.

I need a step by step "lamens term" breakdown of what to do. I know this must get frustrating for you to try and explain this, but I'm getting closer to figuring this out each time. I'm just waiting for my big "Oh, I get it!" moment.

Thanks again, ~Rich~

Good news and Bad news!

First, the good news. It worked!! I'm thinking about changing my name to "ldotsfan's Fan." I did the necessary steps (all of them, this time!), and I'm now sitting here with a WORKING Xbox with a 500GB HD. It not only worked, but it worked fast. From what I read up on about Chimp, it sounded like it would take a long time to clone the drive, but after I started it I went into the kitchen to cook my dog's dinner (yes, you heard me right -- COOK his dinner! But, in his defense, he did spend a lot of money sending me through obedience school) when I returned to the living room to check on it about 10 minutes later, it was done. Of course I was skeptical, but when I hooked up the new HD, it worked! Awesome!

Now, the bad news. I can't seem to get it to recognize the G drive. It's weird because I used the Gentex tool and split the extra GB's between F and G, and it seemed to go okay, but when I got back to the dashboard it was just showing 234 GB's for F and 0 on G. I then tried using Slayer's, and formatted F & G, and it showed off to the side:

C: 298.92 MB free
E: 4,352.31 MB free
F: 234,532.03 MB free
G: 234,595.92 MB free

But whenever I go back to my dashboard, the G shows up at 0. Plus, when I FTP to it, there's no G drive showing up. I even tried loading some apps from AID 4.52, and it showed that it was loading DVD2BOX, but when I went back to my Dashboard -- no G.

I even tried to uninstall my softmod, thinking that maybe if I reinstalled the softmod I could possibly fix it. Big mistake! I don't know what I did, but I got Error 13. I had to go back and do the whole Chimp process again. At least I did get back to where I was before with the dirves all showing up in both Slayers and AID, but no G on my dashboard or when I FTP.

But hey, I'm getting closer!

Signed, ldotsfan's fan.... ~Rich~

Did you enable G drive in your dashboard ? - that is a separate option. What dash are you using?

Done, done, & done! Sweet!

I did some googling about enabling the G drive and found where I was supposed to do it under settings, and once I enabled it, there it was!

Hopefully I'm done now and I can start loading it up with my games. I got a lot of 'em while I was trying to get this HDD running. It's amazing how cheap these games have gotten. I guess they're not quite old enough to be collectible, yet not even close to being new enough to purchase in a store. I've found that I can get them at garage sales or Game Xchange for CHEAP. Gotta love it!

Thanks again ldotsfan for all the help. Keep up the good work!

Yes, to copy linuxboot.cfg to E folder.

Linux lost the capability to read linuxboot.cfg from the same folder as the XBE when the code moved from xbeboot to Cromwell. I've figured out how to do that and launch a secondary XBE. ie, copy linuxboot.cfg to scratch partition, locate XBE launch folder via XeImageFileName in primary launcher XBE and pass control to secondary XBE - Cromwell in disguise. Cromwell is patched to read from scratch partition X instead of E.

This should remove the nuisance of having to copy linuxboot.cfg to E for all linux based tools that launch via Cromwell. First beneficiary will be the next release of chimp2618.

Hi, I just tried to use this on my 1.6 xbox and its getting stuck on the Gentoox Loader.  Please help?
Steps I've done:
  1. Unzip package
  2. transfer cfg file to root of E drive
  3. launch the loader through unleashx
  4. click A when the Gentoox loader appeared

The status on the screen says:
Booting ...

Boot:  Loading kernel '/Apps/chimp2618/linux265'... [ok]
Boot:  Loading init '/Apps/chimp2618/initrd.gz'... [ok]

Starting

And then its stuck there with the xbox green light flashing constantly.  I waited about 10 minutes.  Any idea what I did wrong?

Set target hdd jumper to slave.

It wasn't the jumper that was the issue.  The chimp2618 package wasn't able to launch on my 1.6 xbox for some reason.  It would just freeze at the "Starting" mesage in the Gentoox loader.   Also the original chimp didn't work for me, I could not get telnet to work.

On the bright side, I was able to get everything working using chimp2618 off of the LUD disc that Idotsfan made.  I got the link to it from this thread:  http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=717865

Here were the steps I took:
1.  Download the LUD iso and burn to CD (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xboxhdm2/files/LUD/LUD-v1.01.iso.zip/download)
2.  Prepare target hdd for hot swap by providing it an external power source (used a USB/IDE kit for this part) and setting the mode to slave.
3.  Boot up the LUD disc.
4.  In the gentoox linux loader, select Chimp.
5.  Wait for booting initrd [ok] message and then immedicately performed hot swap of IDE cable from DVD drive to target hdd.  Default setting in the config file allows for only 10 secs.  If you see "Starting Chimp" before you are done, then you are too late and will need to start from Step 3 again.
6.  Verify both drives were detected using option 1 (Scan).
7.  Select option to clone master to slave.
8.  Wait for completion of cloning process.
9.  Back on the menu, select Lock Slave drive and lock the drive from the motherboard.
10.  Back on the menu, select shutdown.
11.  Move IDE cable back to DVD drive.
12.  Set target hdd to Master mode.
13.  Connect original hdd IDE connector to target hdd.
14.  Disconnect power cable from original hdd and plug into target hdd.  (Note:  I didn't do this initially and was still using the USB kit power source.  This resulted in Error 07 upon boot up.  When I switch to using the original hdd power cable, the target hdd came up normally).
15.  Boot up Xbox again with LUD disc.  Select Chimp.
16.  Select option to format master drive extended partitions.  I am using a 500 gb drive so I selected the option to put everything after 137 gb to the G drive.
17.  After partitioning is finished, shutdown again and remove LUD disc.
18.  Boot up again. The xbox should now boot up normally as before as it had with the original hdd.

Thanks Idotsfan for making this fantastic tool for us 1.6 owners!

Nice! This was my first experience with Chimp and with upgrading the xbox HD. Was quick and easy with Chimp2618 and the simple instructions. Went pretty fast too. Then I added a bunch of stuff to the new F: partition and decided to clone it all to a different HD because the first one I used was too noisy for a media center.

Still easy, but whereas C: and E: cloned at an average of 15MB/s, F: cloned at about 4MB/s, so 5 minutes to clone C: and E:, 2 hours to clone F: Oh well, next time I'll know.

Speaking of next time, I've got another xbox, as of yet unmodded, so I'd like to softmod and upgrade the HD. But since I'm just basically setting it up the same as my first, is it possible to use Chimp2618 to clone the HD from my modded xbox to another drive, then use the newly cloned drive in a different xbox?

Would this just be a matter of pulling the EEPROM from the second xbox and using that EEPROM in the locking stage after cloning?

Thanks so much for the great tool!

Well, cloning extended partitions didn't work for me. After 2 hours cloning the F: partition, it's blank. C and E cloned fine, xbmc starts right up, but the F: partition is completely blank. Guess I'll FTP it all down from the old drive and back up to the new one.

Being able to clone C and E to upgrade a drive in such little time is still pretty sweet!

Would this just be a matter of pulling the EEPROM from the second xbox and using that EEPROM in the locking stage after cloning?

You'll need to softmod the second xbox first to obtain the eeprom. The softmod package will need to be kernel version neutral - ie generic fonts for Ndure if the second xbox's kernel version differs from the source xbox.

Check my sig for another alternative - the zeroizing key method. If you are still keen on chimp2618, you'll need ftp access to copy eeprom.bin to /tmp in order to lock with chimp2618.

It has been a while but I did test the extended partition cloning feature before concluding the testing chapter. No idea why it didn't work for you though  dry.gif

Cool, thanks for the tips. I'll check out the zeroizing info and decide how I'm going to attempt this. I'd sorted out that I'd need to go through the softmod process at least to the point of being able to do an EEPROM backup, then moving that EEPROM to the /tmp location on the source drive where Chimp will be able to find it to lock. Didn't consider the kernel version and such though. Good to know.

I'm not sure why F didn't clone either, it certainly acted like it was working. I'll probably give it another go when I try this whole clone for a different xbox setup, maybe it was just a one time glitch.

For the sake of info I'll add that it turns out I didn't just end up with an empty, non-cloned F: partition, but something else went basically wrong in the process, and I eventually figured out that I could no longer transfer files over around 11MB in size to the new F: partition. File Manager would fail it, and my FTP program would fail, then leave a file of the correct name of exactly 32MB size in the target directory. Strange.

Maybe because I cloned from a 60GB to an 80GB hd? So the F: partition had to increase in size as well as clone?

Dunno. Fortunately I could just fire up Chimp2618 on the new drive and use Format Extended Partitions on Master to reformat the F: partition and now it's good as new and my files are transferring back over to it smooth as butter.

I thought about the cloning process again and referred to the development thread. It seemed that I had wrongly formatted the target hdd to its full size - with a matching partition table and File Allocation Tables - FAT for the new sized extended partition(s) early in the cloning process and during the actual cloning, the partition table entries were adjusted but nothing was done for the FAT so there was residue large size FATs for the smaller extended partition now cloned to the target hdd overlapping with the FATs cloned over - this might explain the 32Mb bug.

This should be trivial to fix but will require some time - especially testing. I hope I get some time to fix it soon in the future - until then please do not use the buggy extended partition cloning feature in the tool.

ldotsfan, I do not know if this has anything to do with some of other peoples problems, but I found out If I have XDSL running  I can not get MUGEN to work, and vice versa. If I just have one instance of Linux running I never run into problems. ( linuxboot.cfg ) in the E directory. Just a hunch, and I'm probably off, but just a hunch.

Kodec, have a few questions regarding how to create a 137 GB partition from 500 GB HDD using Chimp.

1.) Can it be accomplished with a soft-modded Xbox? (no "mod chip")

2.) How simple is it? If it's not too much trouble could you or somebody else here run me through the process? I just formatted my new HDD with Chimp and am about to lock it. Your guide works best, thanks in advance.

My compliments to ldotsfan for the simplified version.
