The xbox live features are awesome also, the achievment scoring is kick ass, and the market place shows promise, and so does the media section, the skinning options for the dash are ok, nothing spectacular but with an update hopefully it will get even better 
And playing my own music from a playlist on my ipod during any game...it's just great!

Seriously though I've pretty much stopped gaming on the Xbox 1, it's still a major player in terms of media though. I don't see the 360 completely replacing it until such time as the price comes down, it's got some stable mods and the XBMC and Emulator capabilities are on par with the Xbox 1... though I don't see that happening for quite some time.

Ps. As a graduatoin gift to me, my buddy brought over his 360 and let me hold it for 3 days with all the games currently out. there was nothing even eye catching except Condemned. The most I used it for was to watch movies

Until the 360 can not only become as good as a media center as XBMC but can also play snes, nes, etc roms and run linux and all the other fun stuff I dont see any reason to stop using the "old" console. Even then, I would much rather pay ~$50 per xbox (ebay) as apposed to the $400 per 360. But, I cant complain, I paid $0 for my 360 (thank you mountain dew!) and I do enjoy it but at the same time I feel much needs to be done with it.

Anyway, this new one seems to be very cool. I bought premium one and have been enjoying it for 2 days now.
Niiice! My wife kicked my ass with over 7 times points than i did in Hexic, i suck @ it. It's so cool that even my wife can enjoy it. I borrowed my old and trustworthy xbox for my father, but just borrowed. It can't ever die unless the hardware malfunctions or breaks...
Anyway, game christmas for me is ruined because new morrowind is delayed. Gonna work out some PDZ.

I don't play games nearly as much as I use XBMC to play content from my PC, and even with the 360 / Media Center Extender action, XBMC still blows it away.
Kudos to the XBMC team and the modding community (especially Xecuter) for putting out such badass products... I'm sure the 360 will show up in my entertainment setup someday, but for now it's old school Xbox modded bliss...

I agree completely. Until the XBOX360 modding scene REALLY gets underway and it can do all of the functions that an original modded XBOX, then I will hold on to the original. I hardly use my XBOX for XBOX games. I use it primarily for XBMC and Emus. The first we saw a decent version of XBMC and a good selection of decent emus for the XBOX wasn't until late '03, early '04. The original XBOX came out in late 2001, so it is reasonable to assume that the 360 will take more than a year before it can reasonably perform those functions like the original XBOX. Also, let's face it, if the original XBOX goes belly up it is a HELL of alot cheaper and easier to replace than the 360.

Old hard drives are still just as usable as new ones
I still have a Computer with a Baby-ATX mother board in it... no Network card... and a cheap-as-free Soundcard... and It's still treatin me pretty good
except... I need to fix up the stinkin BIOS so it can boot from CD...

Xbox360's just don't have alot of functionality compared to a modded Xbox... compared to an unmodded Xbox there's alot there that wasn't before
and so far I'm the only person in school that i know of that has a modded Xbox.
In the end it's the functionality that sells the console
Xbox360's don't just have better graphics... they have alot more Go juice under the hood....
that one game about killing zombies... not sure what it's called... yea, there's a fuck load of stuff happening on screen and It still seems to run smoothly... that to me is pretty dang impressive.
and also the fact that you can play your own music while you play any game... that suggests that there's more than one process going on at a time.
as compared to the original XBox that has only one at a time, which was one of the biggest disappointments to me... pretty big problem
so far I can safely say that my Xbox has more functionality than the xbox360
When the 360 gets modded... It might be pretty tough to code crap for it with the kinda processor it uses..
But when crap gets coded... okay, picture this: you're play PDZ and get killed to crap by bots... thats not to fun s you deside that you're best inbred friend in the whole wide state of Texas would be a better oponent. Press the xbox360 button and what should pop up? THE 360 MENU!!...ha, no!... the XBMC or whatever dash menu you've installed!!!
BAM! go to the XLINK tab and click some options, select the game and enter the chat room... talk to your buddy... play the game
it will be possible that for the average user, you wont ever need to use Xboxlive to play online ever again...
one of the main things that Xbox live had over Xlink and other tunneling services was the fact that it was hook it up n' go... but if the Xbox360 gets cracked soon... and It's as easy to code for as it was with the Xbox, we can see some great things
trainers... video recorders so you can record you playing a game... better tunneling services... the list will go on
I also hope that M$ wont play stupid and actually use it's beautiful machine for something other than crappy games like the original Xbox... They were on the right track when they released Kareoke game... but they stopped... idiots...

If you care about nothing but playing the latest and greatest games then you are correct that the original XBOX
is ancient, however I think most of us have pointed out several times that there are SOO many other ways in which the original modded XBOX is FAR superior. I'm not saying the 360 won't ever attain the level that the current XBOX does in terms of it's capabilities. I still say you won't find another media player that even comes close to a modded original XBOX for the amount of money spent, I believe you will regret your decision to get rid of it. The 360 will then probably replace my Xbox for DVD watching (which the Xbox doesn't even do anymore thanks to a damaged old Thompson) and for new games, but the Xbox will stick around at least until XBMC and the major emulators are running on the 360.

Pretty much the only thing I use my Xbox for, a few games get played every now and then but it gets used every day with Xbox Media Center.
Heaps of my friends have seen what Xbox Media Center can do and have run out and buy an Xbox just so they can get Xbox Media Center. The functionality is well worth the price of an Xbox.
The day I read that they have got Xbox media Center running on a 360 is the day I will consider buying one.

Everyone knows that in terms of modern gaming machine that the 360 is superior, but we just pointed out the reasons why it is still worth holding on to the good 'ol xbitch. As for your proposal for a media center, that is all well and good Mr. Moneybags but you seem to have forgotten about a little thing called COST!!!!!!!! Not all of us have or are willing to invest $1000+ on a TV set (let alone all of the other equipment you are talking about). The bottom line is that if you don't mind running things from disc you can get a used XBOX and softmod it for a total cost of $100-$125 and it will work great regaurdless of what TV/Computer setup you have. Even if you want the big ass HD, you are still talking $250 or less for everything and once again it works great with any setup. So while you might be a spoiled brat or making rediculous payments on your setup, the rest of us might enjoy a more cost effective solution. Have you even attempted to use the latest version of XBMC? I'll be honest I have a decent spec PC with different players/codecs, ect. and there are definitely things that can be played better on an XBOX with XBMC. As far as talking about games, several of us have pointed out the value of having emulators. Yeah, you can run them on PCs as well, but hell if you are going to use that argument you could argue that the vast majority of XBOX/XBOX 360 titles can be also found on the PC. People like consoles for simplicity, so it is nice to perform all of these functions on a machine that is very flexible and cost effective.

Might as well keep it around from the sounds of things that'll never happen. I am never giving mine up til it dies and I cannot get parts for it anymore. Then maybe use it as a linux box full time!!!!!!!

Wow, I know $7 an hour at a pizza shop and I'm rich. LOL. Listen, the point is, the Xbox does alot of things, but none of them are done very well. Alot of the emulators I've tried for various systems (SNES being my favorite) are pretty shoddy on Xbox. There are a few standouts, but most of them are not all that great. DVD quality isn't exactly spectacular on the box either. My girlfriend's little Koss DVD player puts out a suprisingly better picture, which was dissapointing to say the least. HDD is very tiny also. I know you can upgrade or what not, but is it really worth the money? I say no. It has nothing to do with being spoiled my friend (espically since I don't live with my parents anymore...), it has have everything to do with working all the time and spending money wisely on products that are going to offer the BEST bang for the buck. I was merely offering a flipside to the fanboy flag waving. PC's do everything the box does, and for the most part, do it much better. My opinion was based on the system's true purpose, a game machine. The lack of "back-ups" for the 360 is what's hurting it right now. No one wants to admit it, but we all know its true. That's why everyone will run out to get one when its hacked. I will state again, it is not very good for anything but playing Xbox games. Its acient hardware. And the reason I enjoy playing consoles, and not PC games, is that you know when you buy a game for 360 or Xbox, that game will work flawlessly 99% of the time. No downloading drivers or updates or running out of resources or not having enough ram or a good enough video card to play a game. I can just pop one in, and play. Not to mention Live. And a wireless controller. And voice chat. Oh I'm sorry, I'm talking about the whole gaming thing again. Oh yea, my TV was $398. PC custom built for a little under $500 over the course of a YEAR. Don't let envy cloud your mind. You hate merely because you do not have.

I have a good 'ol fashioned 27" Zenith TV that I paid $223 (tax and everything) for it and that was 5 years ago. It still runs great but doesn't support HDTV and at this point I am cool with that as HDTV is going through changes pretty rapidly. As for emulators being shoddy, I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. The latest version of FCE (NES emu) is excellent, xSNES9x is great as is the Genesis, Sega Master, ect. The only one that does need some serious work is the N64 emulator but that is to be expected as it stretches the limits of the system. I already mentioned that you could do PC gaming but as you rightly pointed out, it is nice to be able to have a simple machine that doesn't require constant upgrades to run the latest updates/games properly and compatibility issues are virtually non-existant. PC gaming is the best at this point but it is a hell of alot more expensive to stay on top of PC gaming. Once again, where can you get a 27" or larger HDTV on a regular basis and setup that will run media like that for a total of $500 or less? I still say you need to get more involved with the latest versions of XBMC. The media player has come a hell of a long way since the old days of XBMP. Check out what is supported at http://www.xboxmediacenter.com. Even that list is slightly outdated. It will never fully compete with a nice media center PC but it does a hell of a good job and doesn't cost nearly as much. I guess that is the problem. You are the type who only cares about the latest and greatest games. Most of the rest of us care about cost effective solutions for media players, emulators, ect.

Lack of backups hurting it? Have you seen the lines and people camping out for the shipments? Vast majority of people will never mod a system....
But I expect i'll be using my original xbox for a good year or two yet as a media player because it is "appliance-like" unlike most pcs, but the odds of me playing any games on it is slim. My 9 yr old daughter maybe...

as for ps2... now thats a different story... i thought id always keep my orignal playstation up and running, but with the fully backwards playability, the playstation hit the closet faster than you could say "gamecube sucks." lol sorry about that. but you gotta admit, gc cant hold a candle to ne other system (current gen that is)

I got to say, Ive been around since the first pong consoles came out in the 70s so Ive seen all the generation leaps and this 360 has got to be one of the most pathetic attempt at a next gen console that Ive ever witnessed!!
Project Gotham has never failed to bore the living sh*t out of me and the 3rd installation looks just as stale as the rest. Ive yet to see any 360 game clip that looks any better than any Xbox or Ps2 game. I think NFS Most wanted has more impressive graphics than PG3.
So Im Off to play My Flatout and Burnout 3 with their spectacular crash physics, let me know when something new comes out thats worth a 12 page thread!!!!

every since i've modded my box and dropped a 300gb hdd in it, i'm truly starting to enjoy what the potential of a modded box has to offer.
the 360 is only better than a modded box in 1 way...it plays 360 games. other than that, a modded box is far more superior right now. the capabilities of the current 360 is so limited and costly that i'm not even interested in whatever media center potential that it has.
even after we hack a 360, i'll still use my original box for a media center.
