Why buy a PSP?

> so you can repurchase all your dvd's as tiny UMDs
> to buy games that you already own copies of
   > so you can replay from the start because you dont have any saved games
   > because you like games that are tiny and hard to read as opposed to a large tv
> just so you can buy a sony propriety memory stick and say "I paid double the cost of the equiv. SD card!"
> so you can listen to MP3's while looking like your carrying a brick in your pants.

Great device/technology/modding uses but at the end of the day, it isnt practical unless you commute for long periods. I know people that bought them, all the accessories and havent even played them for longer than half an hour a month. Xbox still rules on the PSP anyday.

But it looks great and is a sexy device.

I thought it suicide for Sony to enter into the handheld market. Everyone knows Nintendo has a monopoly in this industry...

I will say that sure, the PSP has some "neat" features, but as others have pointed out it's pretty much pointless unless you commute for long periods. That goes for all other handhelds as well, including all the Nintendo GameBoy variants and other "dead" handhelds, too.

The price is insane for both hardware, accessories, and software (games/movies) on top of it all. Even if you mod it and download games and the like (which I wouldn't condone or support), I still think it's just not worth it. To be 100% honest, I wouldn't even consider buying a PSP if it were $100 for the system, a large array of accessories, and 10 games of my choice and 5 movies of my choice - I would still turn it down.

It's just a matter of time before Sony stops production. I've been saying this from the day it was released. Although I don't like handhelds in general, it really is just suicide for anyone to enter that market to compete with Nintendo. The reason Nintendo sees a lot of profit in the market is because their system with it's price and games in the GameBoy is because it has such devoted children & kids who are into the system. Unfortunately, the PSP was geared towards an older audience, really, and older gamers don't look for portable gaming unless it's for a lot of commuting (like a lot of road trips or plane flights) so it really was destined to fail from the day it was announced.

Sorry Sony, but I think you really messed up with the PSP. I'm glad M$ hasn't made the same mistake of trying to enter into this industry of portable gaming.

There should be a "might buy/undecided."
I would like one, but not at that price.

what? you complain about the small screen and then say you'd rather have a DS? the main DS screen is smaller than the PSP's and the second screen is mainly for the touchpad quality.

i would definitely buy a white PSP if they made one for the US.

It has the hardware, but where is the software... WHERE!!!! I've tried it, all the games suck, which is why I didn't buy one last month, and why I probably wont ever buy one. If I want to play a PSP game I'll get the PS2 version (or Xbox if availbable) and play that.

I bought, and I love it do death.

Kills road time uber fast, and the Emulation and homebrew isn't all that bad either.

Though I plan on getting GTA for it, I am still waiting for some killer games for my PSP.

Maybe would've got one back in the day (when I was like 8-10).  I see all portable gaming systems as being more for the kids to play when they're bored in the back seat or waiting somewhere with their parents.  Who the hell has time to play a game if you work? Full time student? Parent?  I'm both working and part time art student and I don't have any free time like that.  If I had any free time to play games I'd play a REAL game system.  And to use it as a portable movie player is a joke to me.  Maybe if you are a traveling business person on long plane rides who enjoys gaming alot.... that, i guess, would make some sense.  Otherwise it's juss for the kids to me.

Terrible build quality.  Utterly impractical for carrying around due to it's size and ease of scratching, a colleague scratched his screen wiping it with a jumper FFS.  The buttons are horrible.  What's with the analogue stick?  And THOSE D buttons ae horrid, diagonals are a joke.  Playing Tony Hawks was a nightmare.   If I had to buy a handheld, I'd get a DS.  I already own a modified GBA and I never play that, so it's unlikely.

I played one for about 3 hours and I didn't get used to it or really enjoy the experience.  The battery died shortly afterwards too.  Another point.

Plus side?  Really nice screen and the most powerful handheld out there.  Shame it's in such a flimsy package and you have to buy expensive propriatary items to get the most out of it.  Eff you Sony and your DRM stragegy as well:

http://news.yahoo.co...103/tc_nf/39083 (off topic but relevant to my point as it's typical Sony style).

Needless to say I'll not be buying one!  I'll take it if it's free though.

I bought one mainly for homebrew, but i'm enjoying some games too (since i never owned a sony console, there are lot's of games that i never played before).
The psp is a wonderfull piece of hardware, but the limitations that sony imposed on the software are hiding some of it's "shine"...

A couple of people have mentioned build quality with the PSP. I have to say that, having imported a few of these myself when 1st released in Japan and then recently the white version, the build quality of the Japanese version seems to be vastly superior to the US version. I own a Jap and a US PSP (don't ask why) the Jap PSP screen is brighter, it feels more solid, there are no dead pixels ( in nearly every jap i have seen) and one thing I really notice is the finish, I have never seen a facia on a US PSP that isnt without ripples or little imperfections from production. All the Jap systems I see have a perfect smooth mirror finish. When I was in the US in May I bought back 15 psp's with me and not one had a perfect finish or without a dead pixel! I'm surprised more people haven't picked up on this.

I love my PSP but it IS too fragile and Sony holding back some of its functionality in order to sell their UMD movies and their TV streaming box.

My screen got cracked after less than 2 weeks use and im not sure it was even my fault.  I dropped it twice out of my trouser (pants) pocket but it was fine afterwards, but the next day the screen had a big crack in it.  I think it was actually just the changing temperature in the flat to be honest as it was perfectly fine after the small drops.

I would have to say the screen is the letdown on the PSP.  Its too damn slow refresh rate amongst other things - you get major smearing on the screen especially on GTA.  Id rather have had a slightly duller, not quite as clear screen with a decent pixel response time.  I havent seen an LCD this slow for 5 years, my 3 year old laptop doesnt even smear on GTA.

I love my PSP. There are going to be a lot of online games for it in the future. As of now you can play Battlefront 2, Fifa 2006, Madden 2006, NBA Live 2006 and The World Series of Poker online. I use it mostly for emulators and homebrew applications... (like the PSP Radio that connects to Shoutcast) but I also like being able to backup my games to the memory stick.

If you don't like handhelds in general then thats fine, but if you do like them then this is a must have. The Sony PSP is by far the best handheld for gamers, developers and hobbyists.

Obviously no handheld is not going to be comparable to current or next gen consoles so it is kind of dumb to compare them. I would rather play my Xbox or PS2 over the PSP as well, but I play my PSP more since I cannot always play those systems.

It'll turn out to be an unreliable heap of shit like every other console that Sony make.  Whether it's fire-risk battery packs, failing UMD drives or screens cracking due to heat stress, only time will tell, but I reckon Sony'll have a fault-related class-action lawsuit on their hands within 2 years.  Again.

I bought a PSP but only have 3 games. Fairly entertaining but not enough. Was waiting for GTA:LCS, but screw it for $50. I though I'd be at least getting a $10, if not $20 discount vs. home consoles. For $50 I'll get some cool new Xbox or Xbox 360 game. I'm going to try returning my PSP to Wallyworld to help pay for the 360. Then I'll just sell the PSP games on ebay.

Already got the money, but then I'll be able to get another wireless controller, Xbox Live Gold, and another game or something.

I have one and a DS.  I like them both but for pure gameplaying you cant beat the DS(save for all the emulators on psp but im speaking of new games).  Ive had some issues with the quality of my PSP but honestly its Sony, I expected that.  I feel a little cheated also as far as them limiting what it can do and the constant firmware upgrades.  Sony needs to find a way to embrace or license some of the homebrew its just too good.  The Wifi jukebox when in a final build is going to be an amazing piece of software.  It is the last Sony product I will ever buy but overall im pretty happy with it.  One major flaw is it always hurts my hands after an extended session (ie an hour or so), in that respect the DS is a far superior machine.

The day homebrew exists that can route my VoIP over any open hotspot (ie free cell phone service in a sence) on DS or PSP, if ever that is, will be the day that handheld never leaves my side.

Note to self, learn to program already!!

I've purchased 4 PSPs in the last week, 1 from wal-mart, 1 from Best Buy, and 2 from Circuit City.  ALL of them had stuck and/or dead pixels.  I even tried the spastic flashing red/green/blue video to fix.  Sure, 1 of them only had a single dead pixel, but my eyes are ultra sensitive to that crap.  For $250, I want a blemish-free screen.  The quality control on the PSPs sucks.  Bummer too, cause I do like it's potential.

I'm a complete techno-geek (as anyone who knows me would confirm), but the PSP doesn't 'do it' for me.

When you consider they're flogging the UMD movies for £20 ($34) a pop, most of which already sell on DVD for £12 ($20) it doesn't look like financial sense at all! Sony remarketing strategy has made them a mint from those who really should know better.

Produce a facility to play your existing PS1 games on it (with no extra revenue to Sony) - that would be worth having.

A few ppl at work have them and have played with it for a little while. Not really all that impressed, especially as here in the UK they're £180 ($312) for a bare unit off the shelf. I believe that's more than the Xbox 360 core system ($299) is selling for in the US.

In the UK, the 360 core is £209.99.

So it all comes down to choice - PSP for £180, or spend another £30 and get an Xbox 360.

I know which one I'd rather own.

I bought one a couple of months ago after doing ALOT of research on it and i finally decided i would go out and buy one and i have to say that i LOVE IT!  I mainly bought mine for the homebrew, i love to have all my SNES, GBA, GBC, Sega, and even SCUMM roms on my psp and play them whenever.  I also mainly bought it because i liked the idea of watching movies from the umd and the memory stick.  I have only bought one video umd (the family guy movie) but i plan on buying the batman begins umd when it comes out next month.  And i love being able to convert all my season 4 family guy episodes with pspvideo9 and i can watch them on my psp on the go.  It is also cool to be able to browse the internet on the 2.00 fw.  Not to mention it has saved me from utter boredom in my fine arts class at my college, all the teacher does is lecture and put on videos, thankfully they have a unsecured hotspot so i can browse the internet while in that class or load up legend of zelda or even play the curse of monkey island!

Psp is the biggest brick of Poo sony has ever made, shitty hand held, shity games, shitty support, and the only thing it has going for it is homebrew, which homebrew on the DS kicks the pspee in the face, and noe that the gp2x will be shipping to my door on the 30th I hope the psp dies with every other bastard console sony ever bore.

homebrew - so much potential, much more than the xbox

games - screw that, loading times make me not want to play em

if ya want fun innovative mobile gaming, buy a DS.

if ya want a gadget with the potential to make batman jealous, buy a PSP.

The PSP isnt necessarly a bad situation, it has an ample amount of features that are definatly worth it. On the other hand I wish the staff at Scenyx would of got into the scene sooner. It appears now the other sites that try to promote it completely cater to the warez kiddies vs. the dev crew. Matter of fact I remember getting an email saying 'check us out for pr0n videos'. I am glad sony is updating their firmware for these reasons. Personally I prefer a DS though, the scene is somewhat unorganized yet if you look in the right places you find what you are looking for.

Don't have a PSP and probably never will. Got a DS and am very satisfied with it. ScummVM + touchscreen = best console port of it ever. And with the TCP/IP stack almost done for homebrew development and an SDL port having just surfaced, we've only seen the beginning of it.

Got to admit I am a bit saturated with gaming as it is, even the xbox. What appealed to me was the alternative possibilities of the touchscreen. While it dooesn't suit all genres, some truly benefit from it (such as FPS) and it also encourages some totally wacky ideas (such as warioware touched or yoshi touch and go or trauma center).

I would not doubt that MS will soon also try and tap into the handheld market

why not they can always take over by simply taking advantage of thier online play.

Think about playing with 12 players online they would get everyones attention fast.

Overpriced and undersized memory sticks.
Buy my movies over again to use on it? Are people really that stupid?
It's a tad PRICEY....

It's remarkable how SONY can make something so cool yet ruin it at the same time with their stupidity.

I purchased mine and not long after realized that its a load of crap!

The only thing good about it, is that it is portable, other than that i do not recommend buying one.

Graphics are no where near PS2 graphics and the sound quality is not good.

I bought this before my 360 thinking at the time that this costs half as much and i can take it out with me, after about 1-2 weeks of purchase i wished i payed that extra money and bought the 360 from the start!

I own:

PS
PS2
PSP
Xbox 360
Nintendo Wii
