One of my favorite systems. It was much better then people said. And my favorite - TO THIS DAY - controller. Sadly, I went on vacation for a couple weeks and it must of somehow got turned on while i was gone, and when I came back it was melted on the left side. *sigh* R.I.P. Dreamcast.

the controllers and button layout are similar to DC
the idea of an internal memory card comes from saturn
so many game franchises came to xbox from DC
-Shenmue
-Jet Set Radio
-House of the Dead
-Sega GT
-Sonic (yeah its on the other systems, but screw them)

The Dreamcast was truly ahead of its time. The VMU was perhaps THE peripheral that had the greatest potential but was the most underutilized of any system to date. Online experiences through the BBA were great on supporting games, and the video resolution through the vga box was equally as amazing.

oh boy, never got a dreamcast but i would go over to my friends house who had it and we played 12 hours a day trying to beat sonic and shemue 2 or w/e. jeeez good times.
too bad we cant make an emulator for the dc yet but with the next gen we can! sweet.
i still would take a modded xbox in heart beat over DC. Dc had the games but xbox is still a step ahead.

Besides that the dc main downfall was being able to boot copied games without any modifications. although sega later fixed this it was to late becuase ps2 was on lying about there specs { this is a known fact }. Thats why i have come to hate sony not to mention there craptacular console quality. 2 ps2s both broke one xbox three years and still going strong

I'd have to say that the Dreamcast is hands own my favorite console. When I was in college, near the end of the DC's life a HUGE video rental place near my school was going out of business and had some ridiculous prices on used games... after speaking to the owner I bought their entire Dreamcast section for a couple hundred bucks (worked out to about $2 a game I think)... There were a lot of duplicates which I sold on eBay and made a good portion of my money back, needless to say I have an enormous DC collection...
I still play it regularly, probably more often them My Xbox, GC, or PS2.
There are just SO many good games and nearly EVERY genre. The Xbox is known as the Console FPS king but hell the DC had Unreal Tournament, Quake III Arena, Outtrigger, and Halflife, not to mention native keyboard and mouse support... it doesn't get much better than that.
I also agree that the VMU was one of the best console peripherals ever made, My biggest disappointment with current gen and next gen consoles is that none of them carried the torch of the VMU legacy, Heck with the tech we have today we could put a full color LCD in the controller, it's great for poker games and sports games...
Man I wish they were still making DC games....

i got pist off and needed money so i sold my dreamcast because no shops sold anything for the dreamcast . Then fater i sold it a new shop gamestation opens up selling tons of them for liek 2 quid each, so ebay it is, got one brand nw in box for £15. I love my dreamcast. I was with it since its official announcment. I have the dreamon magazine collection, all but one issue lol.

What else is there to say really. My favourite console of all time. I so wish they were style making games for it. I picked up Border Down and I wish I had picked up Trizeal so I could have the last ever game. Just while writing this post I remembered Propellar Arena. I actually really enjoyed that game, shame it never got released and of course Power Stone! I still have all of my import DC games and consoles. Nothing beats REZ in VGA through a booming sound system! One of the most addictive games ever which was only recently rivaled by Lumines, which was also by Tetsuya Mizuguchi. AAAH! Cosmic Smash! Awesome game and Virtua Tennis, Virtual On, Takoushi Battle, F355 Challenge, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Shenmue, Dead or Alive 2 (technically superior to the ps2 version), Soul Caliber, Bio Hazard: Code Veronica, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi and many, many more.
As you can probably tell I'm writing this as I think it. Sorry if it's hard to follow.

one grey and a led modded one. Skies of Arcadia is a awsome title, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 one the DC was the best fighter before it was ported to every console. Power Stone 2 one of the greatest party games. House of the Dead 2 with the light guns Grandia 2 was one of my Fave RPG's and still is. Way to many great titles on this system, Oh yeah I forgot about Fire Pro Wrestling D one of the best wrestlers ever awsome stuff and poyo pop fever (one of the games me and my Girl can play)

I remember getting a DreamCast around the year they first came out. Great system and I really got hooked on the homebrew scene. Alas tho, I ended up selling all of my DreamCast hardware & software a few months ago. It was sitting in a box, and I never touched it for at least 2 years. So since I got a PS2/XBOX, I sold it... made a decent penny too, since it was all in mint condition...
Long Live the Dreamcast.. but I'll never play/pick one up again.

I love my DC. Still play it quite regularly. I was gonna list my fav's , but there's just too many. From the most popular (crazy taxi, house of the dead) to the leastpopular (seaman, typing of the dead) the DC had the best good game to bad game ratio of any console. There will always be room in my entertainment center for my dreamcast.

As usual with sega, the hardware was ahead of it's time (sega-cd (cd!), 32x (3d! virtua fighter almost like in arcade), gamegear (color screen like 10y before mariotendo), nomad 16-bit quality handheld, ...). It had an internet connection and a central system (seganet) for online gaming, the DC was powerful gfx-whise and atleast the thing had decent anti-aliasing (which you can't say about ... well you know who I mean) but also as usual (with the exception of the genesis/megadrive) sega managed to fuck it up.
For a change it was mostly sega japan that sinked the DC, together with too many delays (Rainbow six, Quake3, ...) and cancellation (Half-life, Black & White, Commandos 2: Men of Courage, ... ) of some major PC ports.
Some top titles cancellation (Castlevania: Resurrection, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, Shenmue 2 USA, Colin McRae Rally 2.0, ...), no DVD player (and talking about addons early or even before launch does no good ... (whoops, do I recognise something with the X360 here?)), the lack of money compared to Sony for marketing and the failure to finish a deal with Squaresoft for an RPG and Konami for a MGS episode (which was rumored for a long time) killed it completely.
As square-soft became a clear 'no' what I missed most on DC: a follow-up to Panzer Dragoon RPG (rlsed on saturn), a good enix game or a translated sakura wars (OK, I'll stop DREAMing).
The Dreamcast (Katana/Dural - by sega japan) HW development will always have one of the most intriguant misteries in videogame history. Who doesn't wanna know what the next-gen-saturn sega USA project (codename 'Blackbelt'), based on a 3dfx Voodoo Banshee chip, looks like? (did it physically ever even exist? - any demos made for it?). After the sega vs 3dfx lawsuit (settled out of court) any paperwork or possible HW should have been destroyed, which makes it very unlikely we'll ever know more about this.
Oh and sega and their slogans ... just a few 'recent' ones I still remember:
Sega! "you thought it was just a game" (must have been for the saturn around 1995 or so)
Sega! "Up to 6 billion players" (that one got banned here in europe actually ... the Trading Standards people didn't like the lie).
Let's also take this time to thank sega and their megadrive/genesis for one the the biggest hypes on the internet "All your base are belong to us"!

Atleast sega went out of the HW biz with a bang. The 'Divers 2000 CX-1' is without any doubt one of the coolest limited edition console ever released (japan only ofcuz ... what did ya think ... "you damn westie aint get an'thin'").
What about a sega branded Xbox 360? Now that would make the japs love the MS console

As square-soft became a clear 'no' what I missed most on DC: a follow-up to Panzer Dragoon RPG (rlsed on saturn), a good enix game or a translated sakura wars (OK, I'll stop DREAMing
).The Dreamcast (Katana/Dural - by sega japan) HW development will always have one of the most intriguant misteries in videogame history. Who doesn't wanna know what the next-gen-saturn sega USA project (codename 'Blackbelt'), based on a 3dfx Voodoo Banshee chip, looks like? (did it physically ever even exist? - any demos made for it?). After the sega vs 3dfx lawsuit (settled out of court) any paperwork or possible HW should have been destroyed, which makes it very unlikely we'll ever know more about this.
Oh and sega and their slogans ... just a few 'recent' ones I still remember:
Sega! "you thought it was just a game" (must have been for the saturn around 1995 or so)
Sega! "Up to 6 billion players" (that one got banned here in europe actually ... the Trading Standards people didn't like the lie).
Let's also take this time to thank sega and their megadrive/genesis for one the the biggest hypes on the internet "All your base are belong to us"!

Atleast sega went out of the HW biz with a bang. The 'Divers 2000 CX-1' is without any doubt one of the coolest limited edition console ever released (japan only ofcuz ... what did ya think

Sega bass Fishin? Man that is the best fishsing game of all time. I spent more times playing that then grand theft auto 2 and 7th cross.

But no one is Rep'in the Homebrew? Come on Guys.. You gotta check out Dr Xlax (multiplaley mayhem) and Amanda the witch.. Those 2 are some of the best yet. there is some other pretty good homebrew also.

i guess i shouldnt be surprized in the fact that so many of us xbox fans were also fans of the dc. i can still remember the first time i "browsed the web" on the dc...and i do mean first time ever...lol, online gaming, email.mouse and keyboard, vga adapter, broad band adapter, i dint have divx but i did have the"dream movie" kit wich allowed your dc to play vcd's, jpg disk's, mp3's and came with a remote, emulation, man i loved this machine but it seemed like all i ever did was back this up to my friends and yet i am the only one i knew who had one. seems like over in japan they kept sopportin it...but i dont remmeber, oh and halflife gold...i finaly just got it like a 3 weeks ago...great game uhm...looks much better on pc...but still cool to have on dc, man i think its time to hook it up again

I loved the draemcast because the control was so nice to me really Sega couldn't release a better console because that console had nice graphics on it compared to Playstation 1 and 2. I mean Soul Calibur was a great game on Dreamcast and it was easier to chip because all you needed was a disc to put the data on and run it to play copied or imported games.
That's my opinion maybe others disagree;)

i wish i never got rid of mine, there are countless numbers of great games for this puppy, even the racing games are awsome,, the vmu for football was the greatest thing to ever happen, i wish xbox took to the vmu, my buddy is pissed cause he doesnt have madden 06 to play on live and i wont bring it over to play a game becasue of the play picking, im gonna have to talk my sister into giving me hers, i gave her an xbox, so she better give me the dream cast

yea i loved my dreamcast i still play it everynow and then. i didn't play so many games on it though. alot i didn't like or they just became repetative. i spent my time on my ps2 when i got that and i spent time on my xbox also. the games i played on my dc are on both of those systems so i play them more. i just want to keep my dc in tact. gotta buy new controllers for it. people whored them. lol

I love my dreamcast, I first got one when I swapped my PSX for one and have since bought another. Games that stood out for me were Shenmue, Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi.
I still have mine hooked up to my TV along with the newer consoles.

I still own my DC and Still play it. I think that Soul Calibur is one of the best games ever created and Jet Grind Radio was also one of my favs i played them both till i got 100% on everything and i couldn't even count the hours. JGR was also the first cel-shaded game ever created and that makes the DC my fav. gaming system of all time followed behind with the NEO-GEO. Its a DAM shame that it got shadowed by the shit-tastic PS2.

I bought one at 12:00AM on the launch day. I think it was 9/9 but Im not sure. I dont have it anymore though:(. And I got rid of it before I got into modding systems. I did use to buy burned games off a guy back then though. He used to charge $15.00 each or 4 for $50.00. Man I wish I learned about the self-booting games back then.
And the VMU was the best thing ever for Football games too. Bring back VMU's! I miss them.

You guys bring back fond memories of the best consoles I've ever owned. I still have mine. Phantasy Star Online owned me and my life, Soul Calibur was a masterpiece, NFL 2K series had awesome commentary and realism. I remembered when I bought a VGA adapter for the Dreamcast and I was just blown away from the already incredible graphics especially from Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventures. The difference was night and day. I'ts just a shame that the Dreamcast had to go like that. It was and still a great console.

I loved PSO the most i wasted many a hour on that game, the xbox version just isent as cool as the orginal was.

I didn't have one ever, however my friend does and when i think back at it it really deserved much more and it was highly ground breaking. Hmmmm.... luckily i got to play shenmue 2 on xbox ^^ that series deserves much more!! Let's hope one day...

I still have my Dreamcast and there are still a number of titles that keep me hanging onto it.
The original Jet Grind Radio is incredible, it has a great selection of 2D fighters and shooters, and the games are dirt cheap for the most part.
I really wish Sega would port some of their more cult-favorite titles from both the Saturn and the Dreamcast so we could enjoy them on more modern consoles...

Dreamcast was an amazing system, I don't know why people said it was so bad. You can buy it for $25 at eb or gamestop and the graphics are on par with ps2. I think the games are amazing.

I agree. I used to work for EB Games for 2 years and Sony sucks when it comes to taking care of their customers. Almost everyone I know is either on their 2nd or 3rd PS2 system because of the Disc Read Errors. If you send your console to them, they send you a different one back usually (and sometimes that one doesn't work). Plus not to mention the nightmare of when the PSP came out (I was there for that). Once people started to complain about the dead pixels, Sony sent all the stores letters saying that was normal and not to switch out the system. I saw a few of the defective units and a few dead pixels will really kill a good game experience. Sorry, but if I'm paying $250, I should be given a fully working system, not a half ass "sorry about that, but we'll keep your money".
Also, on the topic of Dreamcast, I still play it more than my modded XBOX. I was playing Sonic and Tony Hawk 2 yesterday. I like playing Powerstone, Coasterworks (wacky, but fun), Hydro Thunder (my favorite arcade racer), and SF Rush 2049 (second favorite arcade racer).
