US Xbox 360 BC list updated *Updated*-- Posted by XanTium on December 9 01:07 EST
From majornelson.com:

Quote

The backwards compatibility team has updated the list of original Xbox games that can be played on your Xbox 360. If you have an Xbox 360 with the HDD, and you are connected to Xbox Live, you'll automatically get a prompt to download the auto update when you toss in an original Xbox game disc. Thanks to the team for listening to the community feedback and working hard to make more titles work in BC mode. (Splinter Cell...cool!)

*UPDATE* There was a problem with Halo 2 running in wide screen mode and other games with the December BC update. The team worked through the night to fix it, so if you downloaded the version with problems, go download it again now.

See the complete list here (new entries are marked by "new" icon)

after running the update, halo 2 will only display in widescreen in 480p WS settings... 720 or 1080 will force a 4:3 frame on the 16:9 picture being displayed.. is anyone else having this problem?

I believe that lockdown was build on an entirely different engine then the other two rainbow six games (Rainbow Six 3, and Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow).  Rainbow six: lockdown is not a part of the Rainbow Six 3 series.  The game plays and looks completely different the the other two games, and quite frankly is a POS.

They need to at least give us some Burnout 3 until Revenge hits for the 360 in March wink.gif .

Glad to see they are continually working on it though (even though they messed up Halo 2 Emu) .

Well, I guess my complaint and others to M$ got MK:Deception removed. It had horrible rendering issues in the game. Although, the Konquest mode seemed to have none of those issues.
By the way, I finally got a copy of DoA 3 back and it looks sweet in 720p WS.
I'll def try out SC:Chaos Theory now.

If you happen to have the original update file can you reapply it and roll back to the Nov BC install to get Halo 2 running in 16:9 again in 720p? Or will the Nov BC file refuse to install once the Dec BC file is installed?

I'll probably have this problem when I get home to try it, I remember half-life 2 having the same exact problem with the emulator out of the box...I wonder if they fixed that, kept reading on forums that it had horrible performance anyway...anybody know if they fixed the brightness issue, you could really noticed this with 4x3 games...screen goes to black, it's almost grey, with black bars on the side of course....I know I'm not the only one to see that, not too severe, but the black in the picture is lacking... dry.gif

the emu ALWAYS had a stretched image to make it 720p. looks stupid too. %99 of people with widescreen tv's can do that on their own.

halo 2 was always 16:9 over here....it's halo1 that wasn't...halo1 actually didn't look too bad stretched...but the 360 played it in 4:3 with black bars on the sides..

I put a copy of splinter cell: pandora tomorrow in my xbox 360.  A message popped up saying an update may be available, go to www.xbox.com/games for more information. I looked around on xbox live marketplace and saw nothing about an update. I went to the BC list and downloaded the Xbox Game Support December 2005 Update. I burned it to a cd, stuck it in, and it said it was the november update.  I updated the console.  Now when i put splinter cell in i get a new startup animation and then a message telling me to put the game in an xbox console. What did you guys do to install yours? Does anyone have the December .xex? I've tried calling customer support but I keep getting  "disconnected"

i'm retarded. maybe i should read other posts first

Has anyone tried downloading the December update yet ?

I just tried playing Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow and my 360 said it wasn't supported yet.
I was connected to Xbox Live. (For Halo 2 I just inserted the disc, it was recognized and downloaded the update).
So I then decided to goto their site and download the december update from there. Did that, burned it to disc and stuck it in the Xbox.. The xbox reported it was the November update..

Are these Splinter Cell updates actually available to anyone yet ?

From Major Nelson's Blog:
There was a problem w/ Halo 2 running in wide screen mode, so the update was pulled down. The team worked through the night to fix it, and will have the new update available later today (Friday.)

Yeah, they should give my money back because my XBOX games don't work on my XBOX 360!  While they're at it, I should get a refund for not being able to play Super Mario 64 on my Gamecube, that really pissed me off.

It tells you to check xbox.com for an update to the list, or something like that. I only tried out a few games to test it out. I'm fine playing Xbox games on my Xbox. I think MS should've either allowed full BC or none at all. There's no point in doing something half-assed. I mean, LOONS and Sneakers but no Rallisport Challenge 2? WTF?

In my view, it's nice that they enabled games for the young ones to work on the 360 since there are not that many 360 games for them yet.  However, you are right.  I recall reading that the "most popular" games would work.  I was expecting to see at least the collection of platinum hits work on the 360.

We'll just have to wait...it would be nice if MS updated the BC list again with a lot of good games right before Christmas.

Anyone try playing Splinter Cell Chaos theory yet?

I tried it right after the update became available and it would lockup about 75% of the way through loading the first mission  sad.gif

I tried it about 5 times and it's locking up at the exact same spot every time. I can tell because it's always the same frame in the animation that it stops on and it's always the same 2 seconds of music that repeat...

it works fine in my Xbox 1 but I was hoping to start the game fresh in 720p  love.gif

Since this topic has been revived I have to say... when are we going to get a new update? BC sucks right now! You can call me a whiner if you would like but it really does suck. I want to play Doom 3 and Morrowind upscaled to 1080i. And Half-Life 2 upscaled in 16:9! It is one things to get a letterbox.... it is another entirely to get a box around the entire picture. BC is simply not where it should be.

The Atari 7800 was backwards compatible with the 2600.  The 5200 was not.

Also, Sega Mark III was backwards compatible with SG-1000 and SC-3000  games as well.

..and MS is being very silent about this. At first Xbox support didn't even acknowledge this, but after calling in again and again they finally agreed that there is indeed an incompatibility issue with VGA and BC.

I've also had a fight with two department stores about returning an unsealed game that doesn't work with x360 VGA although the MS' page clearly states that they should work.

Very bad way of handling things from MS, if you ask me.

No console system has ever been backwards compatible except for the PS2. Are you complaining about BC because you were spoiled by that one system? People are only now demanding BC only because they were spoiled by the PS2 BC. The PS2 only had great BC because they put the entire PS1 on a chip in the PS2 and it was very affordable to do so and they owned all of that hardware. I doubt the PS3 BC will be much better than the Xbox 360 BC. I do not think anyone actually cares about BC and people just like to complain. If you still like Xbox games go play them on the Xbox.

I am glad you made yourself more clear after this post as PS2 was definitely not the first console to have backwards compatibility. Unlike you, those consoles were not before my time.

I have never owned a PS2. For that generation my consoles were XBox and Gamecube. I am not simply looking for something to complain about. One of the things that got me excited about the XBox 360 was the ability to play my XBox games in 1080i. If it wasn't for that I would have waited until March and the release of Oblivian to buy the console. Playing XBox games in 1080i was a selling point of the console to me. While I was aware of the limited number of games that were certified at release I got it anyway as I expected MS to be releasing regular updates to make more XBox games BC. This is not happening. We received one update at the beginning of December and we haven't received another one. It is February. This is rediculous. MS should be doing everything they can to please early adopters as our opinion of the system is going to influence many people's decision on whether or not to buy this system. I am not saying that I dislike the system. I have had a lot of fun with COD2, Quake 4, and Condemned. But, I would tell people to wait at this point especially if they care about BC. Yes, I can go play my XBox games on my XBox but that is not going to provide the 1080i I have looked to the 360 for (unless you play Enter the Matrix and I don't know why anyone would do that.)

HiperEye,

I'm here with you. I bought my 360 for three things, playing 360 games (of which there are none I want.....yet), to play media files through entertainment center, and to play BC games through System Link with the old Xbox. I had two Xboxes, and sold one in July to pay for two preorders (two different stores, just in case there were supply issues). I was happy to see the list in November at 200+, and the frequent updates promise got me hooked, but when I saw 4 new games a month later, I thought this is not going to be good.

I posted this story many times in this forum and have gotten nothing but "you should have waited til a game comes out you want because the premium will be $300 then" and "You should have bought an Xbox1 and saved the $200" comments. Honestly, I wanted to enjoy Halo2 on it, but it's a bit buggy for my liking, and Ninja Gaiden Black is unplayable. WHY ARE THEY ON THE LIST? The only other games I own (Burnout 3, Burnout Revenge and Chronicles of Riddick are not playable at all), so I went out and bought Splinter Cell...actually I bought Splinter Cell ChaosTheory first, and found it to be unplayable, so I took it back and had to demean an employee to get my money back and I got The original Splinter Cell. This was rediculous, MS should make retailers aware that the BC list is not infailable and that we may return the games. I doubt I could have returned it if it was a new game.

It's funny, because a lot of people seem to think that BC is a gift, from MS to us, their adoring fans. WRONG. It's a feature, its touted as a feature, and it's high time someone called them on this. MS has been inaccurate in the past, mixing rumours with information. It's been two months since out last update. BC, along with the media player problems, is damn disappointing on this rig, and I am that more more disappointed with the 360 and MS.
For now...until Ghost Recon and Burnout come out ;-)
