Title: Poopiemagee's Official Save Your Butt Get Your 750 Gig Hard Drive
Post by: poopiemagee on February 07, 2007, 07:43:00 PM
You can read all about the problems I was having getting my 750gig Seagate working right here:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...81073&st=45

But in a nutshell here's what my problem was:
Ok so here's the deal. I got a Seagate 750 gb hd as a gift and installed it in my softmodded xbox. Everything looked great,

the G: drive showed 523gb or something. So I started loading it up, then went into games and noticed some of the games

weren't listed. So I went into file explorer and although dvd2xbox went through the motions, the folders were empty. So I put

the game in and tried to copy in file exlorer...nothing, just get an error message right away. There's about 200gb left on

the G: partition but it won't let me copy anything to it. Does anyone have a clue why this is happening? I tried copying a

game in G:/games to G:/games2 and the same thing happened...it copied the folder but it was empty. And this was after file

explorer actually went through all the motions of copying it.

If this is happening to you, grab a seat and I'll tell you how to get out of it, because I finally got it through trial and

error (WEEKS of it!) and to thank the people that took the time to help me I've decided to give back!  The problem is that

you need the .67 patch and in order for you to have that, you need the 5960 dash.  Just do what I say because I know 100%

that it works!

What you're going to need-
Your Xbox's eeprom
Xboxhdm v1.9
slayers 2.6 or 2.7
Krayzie's NDURE
Craxtion 4.0
xbpartitioner

I'm going to assume you're coming here with an already modded large hard drive.
Open Slayers with Craxtion and extract the whole thing.  You need to navigate to Slayers2.7\SYSTEM\ALL\ everything in there

you're going to need.

Now- take the CONTENTS of the ALL folder and paste them into the xboxhdm/linux folder.  Create the iso (for more info on

doing this click here: http://www.techfreaks.org/articles/modxbox2.shtml )  BE SURE TO READ CAREFULLY ON WHERE TO PUT YOUR

EEPROM!!!

Ok, now burn the ISO you just made with xboxhdm.  I'm being vague about this because the process is described perfectly in

the link above.  Now shut down your PC and plug the large hard drive into the PC and boot to the dvd you just made.

Everything you need to know about this is in the link 2 lines up.  Unlock the hard drive, copy the contents of the drive,

then lock it again.

Hook the drive back up to the xbox.  What you now have is a 500 or 750gig hard drive with the regular xbox files on it- it

should boot to the msdash if you did it correctly.  The good thing is it's now a 5960 dash!  Now softmod it like you normally

would.  I used the SID mod and hit patch 5960 when I finished modding it.  Now FTP or copy over the Krayzie's NDURE mod and

xbpartitioner.  Using one of the supported games (I used Splinter Cell), bring up Krayzie's.  Back up the eeprom and then

have it update to the .67 patch.  When all is said and done if you did it correctly your xbox light will now be orange.  I

installed unleashx so when I booted up I had to go into system/storage and enable the g: in order for unleash to see it.

Ok good...now boot up the box and open xbpartitioner.  Highlight the f: drive, press white until it says format in 32k

clusters at the top and then press start and y.  Do the same for the g: drive.  Restart and you should be good to go!
***NOTE- if your dash reports the full amount of space IT WILL NOT WORK!  THE MOST YOU'LL GET OUT OF A 750g is about 715GB!!!

thanks go out to xman for his patience and help!!!!!!!!!!!!

To let you know, I've changed a few spellings in your post (such as 'Craxion' to 'Craxtion'), and added some helpful links. If I have your permission to alter your topic some more, though, I think it's worthy of at least a temporary addition to the helpful links guide at the top of this forum. smile.gif

Good job on your success!

Good Job...
BTW what are the actual drive sizes of F:\ and G:\ that unleashX reports ?
(important info for others that are upgrading to a 750GB HDD)

UGH!!!

xboxgamer you were right!
there WAS something wrong...i tested it and it seemed ok but i just reached the corruption point of the drive.  i hit it with 100g left...so i've got 650gigs of usable space.  to hell with it, that's good enough.  it will bother me not knowing how to do this correctly though.  argghhh!

Has anyone figured this out yet. I have a 750 and formated using xbpartition in 32k clusters. I split the hd between F and G. Now I do not have access to 90 gigs on each drive, I am missing 180 gigs. I am using bios 5035.137 on a v4(I believe) xbox, which is supposed to correct the F larger than 137 gigs. I am now in the process of pulling all my files off of the 750 to try to format it a different way.

Has anyone tried 3 large partitions? I know H drive is for the memory card, but it may be worth a try.

run xbpartitioner
press b it will split the hard drive exactly down the middle between f and g
instead of 137 gig on f and rest on g

format it
job's a good one

full 750gig

not me, bear.

i did a little better than you...i only lost 100gigs smile.gif

xman claims to have done it but he didn't take notes in the process so he's not entirely sure what he did.
its very frustrating isn't it?  wish i knew before i bought the damn drive.  for now i'm going to suffer with a 650gig drive (poor, poor me!)

You are not losing that much because 1g = 1024m which calculates to 732g.

if its not too indiscrete i would like the model of your seagate hdd just to be sure i buy the right one lol...

Will this one work ? Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3750640A 750GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM

on a other hand i tried doing this with another hdd and i do all the step mentioned but at the last one, the one to lock the hdd, in xboxhdm i type the command to lock and it goes to try to lock but it says aborting and leaves the hdd unlock...anything im doing wrong...

Here are the xbpartitioner steps that have worked for me without corruption on 750 GB hard drives:

NOTE: You NEED a .67 BIOS before you can do this, and THIS DOES DELETE YOUR 'F' AND 'G' DRIVES! So, be sure to back up anything important before doing this.

1. Execute xbpartitioner
2. Highlight the 'F' drive (Partition 6) and click down on the RIGHT analog stick to disable that partition
3. Highlight the 'G' drive (Partition 7) and click down on the RIGHT analog stick to disable that partition
4. At this point both the 'F' and 'G' partitions should both be disabled. Now, press the START button and then the Y button to confirm the disabling/deleting of those partitions. Now, click the BACK button (Next to the START button) and press A to quit xbpartitioner.
5. Execute xbpartitioner again
6. Both the 'F' and 'G' drives should still be disabled, so now just highlight the 'F' drive (Partition 6), and press the A button to cycle through the common partitioning setups, and once the 'F' and 'G' drives are equal (same size, they should both be about 360 GB) press the START button and press Y to confirm.
7. Now, both your 'F' and 'G' drives will be formatted with 32k clusters. Once it finishes, just press the BACK button (Next to the START button) and then press A to quit xbpartitioner.

And you're all set! No corruption will occur now, as both drives are below 512 GB, and they are also formatted with 32k clusters. I have tried this method many times, and I have yet to see any corruption.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

why use the f and g type structure ?
why not all on f ?? as long as ya format with 32k cluster should be ok...
be much better too bad enough having to split it bewteenb e and f, let alonf
e, f and g !

or is there an actual reason not to have it in this tyrpe of sturcture ? or just personal preferance ..

^^You have to have an F and G. With 32kb clusters you are still limited to 512gb per partition.

It works on all versions, as long as you are using either a .67 softmod or a .67 BIOS.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

I am running bios 5035.137 and I split the difference between F and G. Both were formated in 32k clusters. So I should be able to flash the bios with 5035.67 and get the rest of the hd?

Where is it explained about the bios suffixes(.67, .137, etc).

I should mention that I am using a modchip and not softmodded.

I have never heard of .137 before... but .67 means F & G drives (required for 750 GB hard drives) and .06 means F drive only. (512 GB maximum on .06 BIOSes.)

You will need to flash 5035.67 for your 750 GB hard drive to work, and once it is flashed, just follow my guide to format the drive and you should be set.

Yep, 512 GB is the absolute maximum for FATX partitions at the moment. Technically you could do 1 TB on FATX partitions if you formatted the partition with 64k clusters, but there is currently no way to do that.

I got the 5035.137 from AID installer disk. There is no 5035.67 or 5032.67 on the disk. Although, there is 4981 and 4983 on the disk with .67. Now that I look, there are all kinds of bios on the disk, some with file extentions .67.fc.ef , .67.fc, etc. I hate to go to an older bios but if this is what it takes, I will do it.

You have 100% gotten past the data corrupt point?

Just looked around the usual spot and could not find any of the bios that I listed above, so I dont know what to think. I guess I will try the 4981.67 first without the reformat. I have been backing up my info for about 2 weeks on and off, I am running out of places to put it, this is why I hate to reformat.

The bios chart on the home page needs to be updated or is there another site that compares all bios and their atributes?

Xbpartitioner reports that x2 4981 does not support reading custom partition sizes. 4983 may work, I'm not sure.

Post by: bearcreek on March 07, 2007, 09:28:00 PM
Thanks for the info, I can confirm that, I just flashed my xbox with the 4981.67 and it wont doesnt show any space in G or G is full according to the bios. Either way, on UnleashX it shows 0m free for G drive, I should have  106g left.

Been doing some reading and 5035 does not support splitting F and G, it supports F to 137g and G gets the rest.
This explains why poopiemagee only has 650g. The actual size of the hard drive is 732g due to 1024m=1g, a loss of 18g. Now if he formated F to 137g and G gets the rest, G can only hold 512g because that is the highest you can go formated in 32k clusters.

Just checked 4983.67, it does the same as the 4981.67, no free space on G. What bios are you using Frosty?
I believe I am wrong about the 5035 not supporting the splitting of F and G, UnleashX shows 116g free for F and 106g free for G. I have around 250g on F with no corruption problems.

5035 should work. 4981 and 4983 won't. With 5035, setup the drive with xbpartitioner as frosty stated. It SHOULD work fine, as it claims to support xbpartitioner custom partitions.

I use softmods, I use my own custom UDE2 softmod running NKPatcher v10, which supports custom partitions. (I don't like modchips, they are unnecessary IMO.) I'm not totally sure about which modchip BIOSes support custom partitions, but i'm willing to bet that the X2 5035 BIOS does support them, as Movax said.

NDURE and Kingroach both have .67 available, but I recommend that you use NDURE.

You could also custom-make your own softmod (like I do), but that gets a little more complicated...

By the way, if you haven't played Aliens vs Predator (the strategy game) for xbox...it's awesome if you like Command and Conquer (real time strategy games)

somebody needs to get this topic going again. I'm about to order a seagate st-3750640as 750gb drive pretty cheap. any downfalls to using a sata to ide converter? the good deal is on the sata instead of pata and I can't pass it up. I've read that it will work fine. Can anybody recommend the best converter for this? Anybody figured out how to get the full 750 gb out of the drives yet? any opinions on the probability of getting the full 750gb out of it in the future?  One more thing, i have a softmodded 1.4, when i go into my settings on evox, or xbmc and check my bios it says unknown, why is this and how do i find out which bios I have? Thanks for any help!!!!!

I have gotten all of my data backed up and I am now in the process of  putting it back on the drive. I reformated the F and G drives. This time I disabled F and G, then rebooted, then formated the drives in 32k clusters. It seems to have worked, I am past the point of corruption on G drive, but I have 79g left to test. That will be done this evening and I will post the results. I have also not tested the data that I put on it, so I am not possitive if it worked. Use Frosty's tutorial on page 1 of this topic for the best results.

I am not sure but I think I saw where the sata to IDE will work, you should do a search to be sure.

As far as the bios, I use a modchip and I do not know how you softmodded your xbox. I would say you will have to get a bios that will recognize the large drive and large partitions.

I need some help here. I got my 750 hd installed and was gonna put Krayzies Ndure on it. I updated 1.1 installer to 1.1.1.  my first splinter cell copied over to the ar card fine but the second one kept saying not a valid xbox gamesave. tried it several times. finally I had to use sid 4.0. when installing I chose the ndure option. It never gave any options for .67 or .06 patch that I have saw people mention. I read and followed the tutorial for sid. everything worked fine. backup games played. Ok next i put the xbpartitioner file in my apps and ran it, followed frostys post on how to split the f and g drives with g on in evox settings. after formatting the f and g in 32 kb clusters and exiting xbpartitioner it wont play any backup games. when i put the splintercell disc in to try to delete the softmod and start over it wont let me do ANYTHING, it just reboots the splintercell game. I can't do anything!!! How can I fix this? Please help me. I thought I was so close to having this thing going finally. Thanks

Have you tried clearing your /E/CACHE folder, and X, Y, and Z drives?
Title: Poopiemagee's Official Save Your Butt Get Your 750 Gig Hard Drive
Post by: cavinkeven on March 30, 2007, 08:36:00 PM
hey frosty, thanks for the advice. I have to ftp in to clear those drive right? one more thing I forgot to mention. after messing with xbpartitioner the first time. I never actually got it to format and write. it never showed any actual activity at the bottom of the screen. I went back in and did the format and write option and it showed it doing such in 32k. I made f and g at 371gb each. after that was done i went into evox and it shows free space on c:130.039.808, e:4.412.424.192, f:370.628.132.864 , g:371.030.786.048, x:786.300.928 y:774.307.840, z:707.739.648 Does that look about right?  Ok in xbmc, when i go to "my files" it says C:124.0MB, E:4.2MB, f:352.5GB, G: says nothing beside it, and I for some reason have a Q drive that I don't remember ever seeing before. It has 4.2GB. I assume evox is showing the amount that the partition will hold, while xbmc is showing how much info is actually on the partition, not what size the partition is correct? I haven't tried to ftp any of my backup game copies onto the drive yet as I want to make sure everything is correct first. I still have to read up on dvd2xbox program after I get this hard drive setup and figure out what is wrong with my softmod now and why splintercell keeps rebooting now when I put the game in to change some of my evox stuff. Frosty, do you have any idea why it didnt give me the option to pick .67 or .06? Am I assuming right that when I chose to install the ndure thing in SID that it actually installed the same thing that the actual Krayzies Ndure would have installed?  Thanks a bunch, I'm gonna try the cache thing as soon as I hear back from you on the ftp question, I'm pretty sure thats how I do it, I think just clean out any file located inside the cache folder? Thanks

1. Yes, just FTP into your XBOX and clear all the files in your /E/CACHE folder, and also clear all the files in your X, Y, and Z drives. (This is necessary to do when you change the hard drive in your XBOX, otherwise games will have loading problems, or freeze.)

2. Yes, your drives look perfect in Evox.  biggrin.gif  I'm willing to bet that the only reason that your 'G' drive doesn't show up in XBMC is probably just because the 'G' drive is not enabled in XBMC.

3. The 'Q' drive in XBMC is a 'virtual drive' in XBMC, that is basically just pointing to the XBMC directory on your hard drive. Go ahead and take a look in your 'Q' drive, you will see that it just contains your XBMC files.

4. You would not have been able to get as far as you already have without the .67 version, so i'm willing to bet that you already have the .67 version installed.

I hope this helps clear up things for ya.  happy.gif

thanks frosty that worked!!! I tried to extract iso for dvd2xbox from slayers 2.6 to my apps folder in e: it gave me an error. so that didnt work, i hooked my xbox back up to my tv and my xbmc was gone from my apps and  it  shows remotex instead. also, since my hd swap my itools and mini-linux,which I thought i deleted are not accesible. when i click on remotex it takes me to a slayers screen. this shouldnt be on my xbox since i'm softmodded should it? maybe i tried to put dvd2xbox on my xbox in the wrong way? If i can just figure out how to get dvd2xbox on my xbox i think I'll be finished finally and be ready to put my games on my hd. Thanks for all the help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

I just bought my fourth and final xbox off of ebay this last week with plans of putting a segate 750 gb hd in it when i stumbled on this thread looking for something totally different.  I guess I assumed that all the qwerks were worked out with installing larger hd's on xbox's.  Should I consider buying a smaller hd and if so, what size.  I already have 2 xbox's with 250 hd's and 1 with a 120 hd.  I tried at one point to buy that x2 spacer with multiple hd's installed with a switch, but couldn't ever get it working.  Anyways, I would appreciate the advice on what works for a 750 hd and what is working for maximum usage of space.  Thanks.
BTW:  The chip will be an x3 if that helps.

Ok, I have finally got everything pretty much fixed now!! I deleted the slayer files I had copied to e:apps and found that I already had dvd2xbox downloaded from xbins, ftp'd that over to my e:apps and hooked it back to my tv to check it and the remotex or whatever was gone and it was replaced with dvd2xbox so i started that and copied my first game to my f:games and then checked to make sure it would play and it did so I'm good to go on that. then I tried to copy my second game, urban chaos:riot control and it showed files copying but the transfer speed stayed at 0 and the space left never moved and also noticed the light on the xbox was orange during that game transfer when it was red on the first. It finally said it was successfully finished so i checked and it wasnt there!! tried another game and it worked the same as the first and 4 more after that. I'm gonna try urban chaos again after the current game finishes up. I remember reading somewhere that some games must be patched i believe. could this be the issue with that one game? also one other question. Seems like I can remember on my friends chipped xbox (250gb) that when you wanted to swap games you could just exit the current game and choose another game. on my softmodded xbox I have to get up and turn it off. Is there anyway to fix this so I can just exit and start a diff game? maybe in game reset? Oh yeah, and another thing, i see when about to rip a game to hd it has two options on copy mode:normal and iso ripper. What is iso ripper for? movies?  Thanks for the help from everyone. I'm pretty much home, just got to do a little bit of tweaking now it seems and get xbmc back on my hd. It still shows a few xbmc files when ftp'd but It's not in my apps list on my evox when hooked to the tv like it used to be. Itools and mini-linux are still there but not clickable, the cursor just skips over them.  Thanks again guys!!!!! If anybody has any tips they will be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
