I can't seem to get Killer Instinct 1 or 2 to run. It keeps telling me the chd file is missing. What is the correct path for the CHD files? Using Killer Instinct 2 for an example I have it:

Game:\Roms\kinst2\kinst2.chd

I have tried packing the file into the rom, putting the .chd file in the same directory of the rom, directly in HDimages folder and in its own folder within the HDimages folder. What am I missing?

honestly i havent tried any CHD games. there are (i think) 4 different versions of CHD out there for each rom

the CHD's should go into the HDImages folder. If you get an 'error chd not found' it means its an incorrect checksum i believe.

I cant get the directory option to work. Ive tried doing this

under SYSTEM Folder edited the INI  to USB:\Games\Mame\roms and nothing works. also have tried just starting it without messing with the ini, still nothing. so I tried placing on the root of my drive nothing. Also tried the xbox hard drive what am i doing wrong any suggestions?

My Usb drive layout is the usb with folders inside , then i have a folder that reads games and this is were i put the mame file with everything inside of it at, (/Usb0/Games/Mame/) then i put the files for roms in (/Usb0/Games/Mame/roms/) example (/Usb0/Games/Mame/roms/mk) , (/Usb0/Games/Mame/roms/Killer Instinct).

Can someone help create an .ini or put me in the right direction? Really want to use this great homebrew

Get an unedited copy of the INI, replace the edited one, and just put your zipped ROM images in the /ROMS/ folder like we've been doing for the past 14 years.

yeah the CHD formats have changed a few times. I cant confirm if CHD games work, but theres no reason they wont provided you have the correct files

OK, first off I'm sorry for posting this here in this thread instead of the GBA release thread but this is an in and out question (plus I know Lantus is currently watching and reading this thread.)

Lantus, would you mind adding support for Sonic Advance 1 and 2, every time I load either of these games the copy protection comes into play and get black bars (and a jazzy tune.) tongue.gif
Iv'e tried messing with the .CFG file but unless I'm missing the setting I cant get it to work.

These games work fine in Xeboy Advance but as you said before it's got frame skip issues and stutters.

Thanks..

On Topic: Thanks for the Mame port, I'm definitely gonna get stuck into this later with my mates to get our MK-on lol.

lantus. Is there anyway of modifying the pitch in the hacked sound driver? If you play the MK arcades on MAME versions after 0.72, the pitch is lower, that is the correct pitch. I only ask because im a purist to the way there supposed to sound. Thank you.

Oh, and in umk3, i still get the same graphic glitches for the select your fighter & choose your destiny screens, once you unlock ermac, mileena, and classic sub zero.

Nice work! I do have a couple things to report. When you are at the “parts missing” screen it freezes if you push the “xbox guide” button. CHD games run at about 20/60 fps. My CHD's are downgraded from a newer version, so I am unsure if that is why they run slow. From what I understand, the information is largly the same, and they run fine on MAME v0.72 on my PC, so I believe it to have no effect. I mapped the increase frameskip to a button and that did not work. Other than that this emulator works very well for the first release.

Im at work now, so when i get home i will mess with throttle mode. Are you able to access that function off the bat, or do i need to define buttons for it to enable it? Thank you again, and thank you for releasing this! I hope v.141 comes to the 360! :-D

Post by: infidelity on June 03, 2011, 01:46:00 PM
lantus. I enabled throttle mode. All it did was speed up the gameplay and music a bit, it didnt change the actual pitch. This has always been an issue with me back when .72 came to xbox1. Thats why i believe it deals directly with the hacked sound driver.

That would be great if your able to get the dcs's pitch to where it belongs in this emu! The speed of both gameplay and music are perfect, if the pitch can be fixed, then we truely have, truely, the exact arcade versions, just like the physical arcades!

Not sure but i think the chd would have to go inside a folder like....

Game:\Roms\kinst2\kinst2\kinst2.chd

My original problem was the CHD's were for a newer version of MAME. I had to use CHDMAN.exe to extract and HDComp.exe that came with MAME v0.72 to recompress them effectively downgrading them. Then you need to put them directly into the hdimages folder without any extra folder.

For example:
Usb0:/Emulators/MAME/hdimages/kinst.chd

Beware that they do not run at full speed.

Maybe if someone could port an UltraHale64 Emulator or Find a way to make it work but I seriously doubt it would be anytime soon. I will love to see a Full Screen Feature and Maybe some Filters though.  biggrin.gif

lantus, could you add an easy way to skip through the games list for e.g pressing LEFT or RIGHT on the D-PAD advances the list 1 whole letter ahead i.e from A to B etc.

Using the triggers when using close to a full rom set to select games that begin with S for example takes some time to scroll too.

Also, is there any real reason no-one is porting the latest versions of MAME to 360 or PS3? Are the consoles too underpowered to run the latest versions? I would have imagined a 3.2GHz tri-core CPU in the 360 for example could run most normal roms in the latest MAME release with little problem.

Lantus,

Thanks for the insight it is really interesting stuff, it gives a good clear indication on why these powerful beasts are unable to run at there full potential with putting lots and lots of time into coding..and changing the way a "port" (aka from a pc) behaves because of the way it executes the coding.

Do you think you can port killer instinct xxx over?

Sorry but i love this game it still outperforms other fighters in my opinion.

To answer my own question, they do go in the screenshots folder, they do need to be png files, and a resolution that works well is 500x286.

quite simply yes.  the mame codebase runs poorly on anything outside of an x86 CPU. There is no dynamic recompiler backend of anything outside of intel currently - and there are no plans to be as far as i know.

Without getting too technical both the PS3 and 360 CPUs handle in-order only execution. while x86 cpus handle out-of-order execution. What does this mean? Basically as code gets executed, the 360/PS3 cpus will stall over and over while it orders the instuctions in a in-order format that is required. On a PC, this does not happen. They (MS/Sony) provided in order only CPUS in their consoles to reduce costs/chip die size. To work around the performance implications of this they gave the xenon cpu 3 cores to work with.

Now, mame and every other emulator out there was developed on a PC. Running PC code on a PPC chip just wont perform well. Any dev who has made 360 homebrew from PC source will tell you the same thing. Why do you think there is no N64/Dreamcast/GC/Wii emulators out there yet?

On top of that, over the years the mame codebase has become slower. This is a fact. Even on a PC. Mame360 performs worse than Mame 0.72 because its a higher revision of the code. The mame devs have no concept of performance implications its purely about emulation accuracy. PGM roms run at 35fps on my mame 0.141 build, yet they run at 60fps in FBANext - and the driver/cpu code was taken from mame in the first place.

Now having said that, yes with optimizations/multithreading theres no reason why a 360/ps3 build couldnt run well. But now we have to deal with 1) spending weeks/months modifying the code, and the expectation to keep that same codebase up to date with mame revisions. It would become a nightmare. I personally dont want to deal with that.

hey lantus hows that patch coming along?

How many N64 emulators does he have to code for Microsoft consoles before he becomes famous?  I for one appreciate the vast history and success of lantus' XBox N64 emulation projects as well as their current incarnations that continue to this day.

In addition, I believe that "the scene" cannot catch fire, as the supply of exploitable X360 consoles will continue to dwindle.  The cries of hatred from those who can never enjoy unsigned code on their consoles will burn the ears of those who code for the JTAGged, and "the scene" will grow parched and burn as a scorched plain.
