FreePSX beta v0.1Posted by XanTium | December 2 21:09 EST | News Category: Xbox360 |
|
Ced2911, member of the LS-Team, released the first public version of FreePSX: a Playstation1 emulator for homebrew/JTAG 360s. The GFX emulation is very good for most games, but there are still a few sound problems. The release includes the full source-code for other developers who may want to help improving FreePSX.

dreamcast next WOO!!!
gotta try raiden projects for ps1 and rtype delta

So far I could only get MK trilogy to work my 3d games like MK4 won't work right. Only sound effects work on MK T no music, but it's only a beta. I am glad they are still working on this hopefully it will be running in the near future.

Wow Only took 5 years to emulate a 15 year old system awesome... So probably 10 years for the Dreamcast?
Sorry for my cynicism...
While I think this is great, it seems no one cares about the xbox scene anymore. Only a few select groups and either they get arrested, or disband. That's why I don't bother donating anymore, it's like why would i donate for a loss cause?
I am glad there are 50 million tools to extract your NAND, great. Let's focus on fun stuff like, emulators. How can the N64 not be emulated yet, why has no one picked that project up. Seems like the original creator abandoned it after his "incident" which I understand, but why has NO ONE ELSE done it? Out of the ooo 7 billion people in this world? I would gladly donate to a project like that.
I just hope this doesn't become another dead project is all.
Just so cryptic now because of all that's happened.
-
Awesome. ive been waiting for this for awhile.

Maybe you should do it? Can't be that hard right?? I'm sure all 7 billion people have lots of extra time and 600+ bucks sitting around to purchase a Dev Kit...
-
Nice job. Can't wait to try this out.
-
Tried a couple of games, Tekken 3 and Resi 1. Both don't work. Resi crashes and Tekken 3 is unplayable
Just trying some others, good work
-
Hell yeah! Been waiting awhile for this, thanks Ced

Awsome!
Just saw my Xbox-scene RSS feed update on my cellphone and instantly threw myself over the closest computer I could find to secure a download of this betarelease
So anyone tried any other formats than .iso? Most of my PSX-roms are in .bin/cue or .iso or even .mdf/mds.
I'm not at home right now so I can't test it myself, but an answer would be great

Yes bin,img,iso
-
Just tried Alundra, runs smooth without glitches! Sound is as stated a bit "off" though! But overall well beyond playable!
-
i tried metal gear solid.
image was .bin
not working (freeze on startup)
-
SOTN starts in BIN-format. But with no music/speech and some lag. It also cant find any memory cards.
-
I downloaded crash bandicoot for this to try it out, i got a 1kb Iso Image file and a 540mb data.bin.ecm file? everytime i try to load it up my jtag freezes? Any suggestions
Edit: Changed the file format to .bin and Box still freezes.

Use ECM Tools to convert the ecm file properly. And don't talk about downloading any roms.
I tried FFVII - Xbox shuts off right when the intro FMV ends
FFIX - Intro FMV plays for a few seconds with sound but no video and then the Xbox shuts off
Tekken 3 - Character select screen stays on when I start a fight -> unplayable.
All of them are .bin format. Maybe they need to be in .iso format to work properly? The FreePSX previews show the first playable area of FFVII, but my Xbox shuts off right when it begins.

I believe it was created with an SDK that hasn't leaked, so no one has continued the project. I could easily be mistaken though, I don't know much about programming.
You have to remember the majority of Xbox 360's can not be hacked to run unsigned code, its its not as easy as soft modding an Xbox 1. I think thats why the homebrew scene is so small compared to back in the Xbox 1 days.
It was also a lot easier to port apps to the Xbox 1 as it ran on the x86 architecture like PC's do. Today we have cheap Nettop PC's that make great little Media Centers / Emulation machines and use a lot less power than an Xbox 360.
I know I couldn't do any better so i'm just grateful for what we do have.

@ InsaneNutter : Love64 is still being worked on by Team Xelove. The newer SDK has not been "leaked" but people do have it, you just will never find it on a torrent site. You are correct that the limited number of hackable machines is the main reason for limited development. Another huge factor is the virus over at se7ensins which has spilled over to here and a couple other places.
Edit: It's running just fine...I was running the wrong XeX before Oops
I'll have more input once i've tried a game on it

Strange that Tekken 3 isn't working properly considering it was one of the games shown to be working correctly in the screenshots released a few months ago when it was in development.
BTW, can you run games in fullscreen?
-
Tried running Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and I couldn't get it to load. It froze my Xbox and didn't even load any part of the game. It froze in the PSX main screen. I was trying to boot an img file.
-
Tried X-com UFO Defense...No sound and froze. Thanks anyway
-
Question is if this is just gonna be a one off release and never(or rarely) updated again like every other 360 emulator. It'll be great if they get it reasonably playbable as quick as possible, but if not i'm not gonna build my hopes up.
-
tried FF7 in .iso format, freezes right after opening video..
I hope dev continues for this >.< I would love to see full screen options, fixed sound and working games
-
Tried 'Fate - Unlimited Code'
Just froze on first screen... boo hoo...
iso format.

You know there is an XBLA version of that game right?
-
has anyone actually gotten this to play a game ? every iso ive tried stops and goes black after main intro screen.
-
It's an early beta-release, I didn't expect any sound at all and certainly not 24fps or anything close.
But I just tried GTA1, a bit slow and chopppy sound, but still fun
Can't wait for further releases, maybe I'll finally get to play Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, or Code Veronica X.
Never got to finish those back in the days
-
im so sorry.
i´ve been a dummy.
my images (MGS and CNC) were ECM compressed.
had to extract it.
now MGS ist starting but in the game i just see the HUD - so its unplayable.
but CNC is working fine (besides of the sound)
thank you for this amazing emu!

PSX on the 360?
I'm so down!
Props Ced2911, glad to see people are still developing for this beast.
-
I can't get Syphon Filter to work. There's no sound and when I try to do New Game it keeps saying mission failed.
-
Ok, I've tried a few of my old games...
Hog's Of War
Ripped this to a .bin using ImgBurn. Disc is a pirate.
The game has choppy sound at menu and in game, and no sound on videos. Game starts and lest me enter a new mission but once the mission starts the camera just stays looking at the sky (suppose to swoop down to view the first hog). I can still get into the pause menu and return to the main menu when the game it just looking at the sky.
Medal of Honor
Ripped this to a .bin using ImgBurn. Disc is a pirate.
Won't start at all
Silent Hill
Ripped this to a .bin using ImgBurn. Disc is a pirate.
Starts and lets me see the intro video (no sound in the intro video, choppy sound in menu and game) then just shows me a black screen. Though when I press select the inventory menu shows up and I can navigate that fine.
May try more tomorrow.

Just to be clear, this only works with images, and won't play actual discs, right?
-
Anyone got a compatibility list yet?
-
I was hoping to play Harvest Moon. Intro screens work, but nothing else.. Great work anyway..
-
I'm surprised at the lack of posts on this. Anyway, I just tried a few games...
Mortal Kombat II (NTSC-J) - runs perfectly
Mortal Kombat 3 (NTSC-U) - loads to "Prepare for Kombat" then just stays black
Mortal Kombat Trilogy (NTSC-U) - runs perfectly, though CDDA is not working (I can't think of any emulator that plays CDDA from ISOs)
Mortal Kombat 4 (NTSC-U) - intro FMVs play, no picture during any other part of the game

If you're desperate to play that game buddy the Xbox1 version works flawlessly on the 360 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hah, didn't even know they made it for Xbox. Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't really desperate, just felt like trying out a game and that was the first one that came to mind. I might get the original Xbox one now that I know, though. Thanks!
-
I think it's called THPS2 Remix or something like that, it has some of the levels from the first game added to it and a few other things, IIRC. THPS3 was the best of the series, IMO.
-
well im totally confused
in xexmenu i tried running:
psx.xex - makes my 360 turn off then reboots, tried multiple times
and
Fichiers compiles\Alpha\default.xex - will run, i assume the games are supposed to be listed here but its doesnt see any iso files, and i have lots of them. do they need to be in any particular place?
-
sorry for double post
EDIT:
Fichiers compiles\Alpha\default.xex - will run, it can see the ff7disc1.iso i have in there but you click it and it freezes on that main screen
is anyone using any particular programme to make their games into isos as i have lots of copies and im currently using magiciso
-
I only tried Grandia (us) so far with the compiles\Beta\default.xex and hq3x , it gets to after the intro video when people start talking but I got a black screen and it froze the xbox.
Haven't tried alpha or hq2x / scale 2x.
Edit : Just tried scale 2x, doesn't lag as much but it still black screens and freezes the xbox.

I tried hq3x scale 2x and both look like this : http://imageupload.org/di-212915748267.jpg
There doesn't seem to be an in game menu for the emulator.

from what i have seen so far from other peoples comments this port isnt worth using unless you can improve it. i know nothing about that kind of stuff so im in no posistion to complain about other peoples hard work, but i think im going to wait for a new or improved version, but its a good start for development.

Need for Speed : High stakes here we go again. I wonder if it will work better on the 360, it barely work on the XB1
-
I don't see why this is "not worth using," the bezel is kind of annoying I'll admit, and the somewhat distorted image it produces is weird, but hwy, it's a PSX emulator for the 360. It doesn't have too great of compatibility, but for a first release, I would call it a success. It does run several games, afterall. I'm gonna give a couple more games a try later tonight, probably WWF Smackdown! 2.
-
Big thanks to the gents @ Logic Sunrise. They put in a lot of hard work, and I'm very appreciative for it. Hopefully with given time, this emulator will blossom with full compatibility and full speed/sound.
-
To make the emulator work properly:
Extract PSX.XEX and EFFECT.FX from PSX folder
Put them into your emulator folder, BETA or ALPHA (where default.xex is). Rename default.xex to anything else (like default.xe or whatever) to make sure FSD doesn't add this later. Rename PSX.XEX to default.xex, remember effect.fx must be there at the same folder level.
Now try it again with your games!
DRIVER and MGS working for me so far. Still sound issues but 3D games work @ good speed! (360 freezes when selecting "Try Again" option in Driver, but the game is playable at least)
Now you can't say this isn't a good alpha/beta...

Didn't work for THPS2. Although, I did get some weird audio issues when I tried booting the game. I guess that's a step farther?

I can verify this works as well! Tons of 3d games work. Twisted Metal 2 and 3 work fine, also gran tourism 1, and crash bandicoot all work at close to full speed! I would test more but I got finals to study for, maybe tomorrow.
This is actually a really good emulator!!!!!!!
-
Any update on this emu? It's been a few months without any news..
-
Would be cool to see Ps2 support too
