FreeStyleDash v2.0 7/5/2010 Progress Info
Posted by XanTium | July 5 15:43 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Helldoc reports about the progress made to the upcoming FreeStyleDash v2.0 on his blog by taking a look at the (internal) 7/5/2010 SVN build:
Quote

Testing is underway and things are looking amazing!! There's still some visual issue: A tab sometime appears blue, seems to be some threading issue with our skin xml loading... If your content list is pretty much empty issues is not seen....

Copy DVD is working fine, but skin needs some work.

In the profile tab, the gamertag is misaligned.

HTTP downloader is 100% stable, all of my content seems to get scanned fine ( i got lots of extracted games and xbla games. GOD and homebrew should list fine too, will test later.

About the SVN log not working anymore, it seems like there some issue with our website, just go to http://trac.teamfsd.com/log and you'll see whats going on.

I hope that auto update feature can be disabled? I normally like to see what other people's experience is with new versions of software before I install it.

Yeah, don't worry the notification just tells you that there is a new version available. We made it so you can disable that or just have it notify you of a release build instead of a alpha or beta release.

awsome work guys!! just awsome!!

one question to the pro's!!
seems that currently mkv is a no go, in future maybe
but what about including .srt (subtitles) support so we can watch our .avi (xvid)

would that be possible/easy to do? since it's not a new codec or so.
would be really great.

also is there anyone working in mediaplayer yet?
i wish this alpha release "calls" more pro's interested to freestyle dashboard.

a complete mediaplayer would be so sweet, i would be happy for now with .srt support smile.gif
since it's your own code maybe u can get this easy?

thank you for the amazing work!

The current Media player parts planned for FSD are just the native support in the code of the 360, nothing more. They are not porting a new media player... so even srt support is not possible as far as i know, cause its not natively supported.
We will have to wait for a true mplayer/vlc port for new multimedia formats

yes i understand. i just thought they could add an option to show .srt subtitles over the movie using some kind of easy code i dunno.

thank you

The new auto update video is pretty sweet & convenient. Take your time TeamFSD! I'm happy with 1.20 as it is, but 2.0 will rock!

As mentioned above, integrated KAI would be amazing.

You can use subtitles with AVI if you use TVersity to stream .avi's (and other formats...PlayOn will stream MKVs to the Xbox 360, as will the PS3 media streamer (can't remember its exact name)). Check out TVersity's forums, as I can't remember how to stream the subtitles, but it seems like it was really easy.

sure that would be extreme cool
maybe sometimes we dont need a connected PC with running KAI

but ... as you know the release for this ALPHA version takes extremely long
here are only rudimentary features implemented

so, if we could get a version with fully integrated KAI or other stuff it seems to take 24 Years

i think we all have to learn howto code for ourselves, to implement such features alone :-(

Id like to see kai intergrated into the dash, if it happens it happens, but one thing people are forgetting is that the pc is still needed. if you remember with xbmc it was intergrated then and the engine needed to be run on the pc side. they still have support for it at kai. Im not sure but sure the source code for the xbox might still be over at xbmc.

Post by: kettenschutz on July 06, 2010, 05:46:00 AM
it should be possible to run the kai-server on the xbox itself, so no pc is needed

the big quest here is the perfomance .. is the xbox fast enough to run the kai server and a fully HD game ?
dont think that, but the cpu has much perfomance to do something special

well, we'll see ...

can the xbox run 2 xex at once?, except dash/game and blade? The old xbox was powerfull enough to do it but couldnt handle 2 xbe at once. Thats why i think the pc engine is still needed to be run. Finding games isnt a problem really if people dont host in lobbies or jtag ppl actually use the jtag arena instead.

Before we ask for more features I would like them to release FSD 2.0.  Than all the new features could be for FSD 2.5 or 3.0.  The biggest differnce between this and xbmc is this is closed source and xbmc was open source.  Any time xbmc was thinking about adding new features we could try them out right away.

How you come up with it being closed scource i dont know becouse the dev's allready explained
that the scource is gonna get released again with 2.0 same as all other releases .
they allready explained why as well , its becouse everybody was releaseing compiled rev. updates
with loads off bugs wich could brick consoles and people where screaming it was buggy as hell end
the devs bricked there consoles so they dicided to take the scource offline until they got a stable release.

Read the story on HellDoc's blog i would say.

That is called "Proper English". Being an American you wouldn't know this.

American Butchered English has infiltrated society so much that even Firefox tries to correct me when I type Favourites. Pathetic.

Many people want media player, if We have our xbox on our living room, why do We need another computer or a streamer?

I am C programmer, and I have worked a little on the ps2 sms homebrew media player; I can
tell You that the same way we show cpu utilization on screen in freestyle beta, we can also show subtitles.

Also since h264/avc decoder is already in the updated xbox native media player but is supported only inside mp4 container, we need to add mkv container support, but not decoder support. It is not as easy
as adding subtitles support but IT IS possible. Much easier than porting a media player.

Umm, no.  It's called English.  It is also likely your spell check is set to English(US) because that is probably the default.  Being ignorant, you wouldn't know this.(although, it is also ignorant to think it's spelled wrong)

This does look amazing and it's looking closer to release.  I haven't even touched my 360 in a while and might not until FSD 2.0 is out.

Well that is good news at least. And dude, I know many people want a Media Player. Who doesn't. The applications are awesome, especially with x.264. But this punk asks for too much, and I got sick of it. That is all. You will never hear me begging for software or features within those pieces of software.

Why? Because I have respect. Plain and simple, I take what this guy (htfmls) is doing as disrespect. Anyone who doesn't needs to open their eyes up.

THANK YOU so much for what you said. I thought so that .srt support would be kinda easy, i'm not asking new codecs or containers, only an option to "paste" subtitles in front of video. Since it never leaves freestyle dashboard, dashboard could do that easyly, by those who KNOW how to right?

thank you very much again.

I just wanted to interject that coding is not exactly a simple process, e.g., Murphy's law applies. It's rarely as simple as "just throw the code in there so we can use subtitles/mkvs/whatever!" Actually, it's never that simple.

I have no problem with people asking others for features or programs, but if it becomes incessant it's a turnoff and no one will want to help you. People do this for free on their own time. Having kids whine about how they just want to [insert here] is a huge turnoff and demotivator.

Keep it short, sweet and to the point, and don't whine when your dreams don't appear within two days. This stuff takes time.

I think its a joke because the 360 could never emulate a PS3 game and the dvdrom could never read a BDrom disk it doesnt have a bluray laser. Unless this has some other meaning it may just be them playing a prank on stupid people.

How does anyone know for sure that a 360 can't emulate a PS3 game? There are ways to do shit...who would've thought you could play gameboy games on the 360? I bet you would have to run all the processing to the game somehow though....

The other thing is that no shit, an EMULATOR doesn't take game discs, it takes files. Of course the 360 can't play blu-ray.

Post by: red_ring_of_box on July 08, 2010, 09:57:00 PM
the 360 can barely emulate xbox original games without crashing I doubt that it could emulate the PS3 when it only has 512 MBs of ram(the same amount of ram the PS3 has as well) AND a completely different kind of processor(a cell processor) besides that practically no progress has been made in even dumping PS3 games and understanding the file format of their executables/file system... at least that I know of. There may be at least that but I'm not sure as I don't follow the PS3 hacking scene very much.

I can't believe some of you are actually even thinking of the possibility of the Xbox 360 emulating the PS3. A better discussion would concern the PS2, but I highly doubt that's possible either.

Out of curiosity (I know nothing of the specs or anything), but why do you think PS2 emulation would not be possible? I would just think that it is just years out, in a playable (or even semi-playable) state. That being said, I have no idea how powerful the PS2 processors are. Perhaps it is simply that you're saying it just isn't possible for the 360s processors to emulate the processing power of the PS2.

Anyway, just curious if you or anyone can shed some light on this.
(By the way, in case I wasn't clear, I only mean PS2 emulation, I'm not talking about through FSD)

WOW...looks like checking Xbox-scene every hour or so, a habit I've made for a month or two in anticipation) may be about over). I hate to jump the gun, but from what I see, they could release the Alpha now! (not that I'd complain if they didn't, I've been patient for a long time, and I can still wait). I'm just saying it looks GREAT! Good work TeamFSD.

@Tiderium:

When I started reading your reply I thought it was going to be the normal whiny complaining that we hear all the time. However, your reasoning is sound. I actually made the comment to my brother that this is becoming vaporware; and it really is getting ridiculous.

Still, I won't crucify the devs like some people do. I think the biggest issue they have is not having a manager who knows when to say, "We need to release this already," and get things pushed out the door. The biggest problem (and blessing) coders have is that they're incredibly anal: they're always fixing things and never fully satisfied. That's great as long as you have limits, but it can kill a project very quickly if you're not careful.

I know the software will be awesome when released. Heck, I about jizzed myself when I saw the videos. But they're walking a fine line between ensuring a quality product and pursuing perfection. It's kind of reminiscent of Valve's antics, but we all know how great their products are. If this team turns into another Valve, it'll be tough to wait, but I won't be disappointed.

Before people tell me to code if I don't like how things are going: I'm working on getting to the point where I could actually be a help more than a hindrance to a project. Once I really feel comfortable working on stuff on my own, you can be sure I'll dive into a project or projects and start giving back.

Here's the thing-

If we released 3 weeks ago, people would complain nothing works.

We can't win, so we release when we feel we're happy with it and when we feel it is an alpha version....

If we released 3 weeks ago, people would complain nothing works." some whiners would yes most definitley you will always get that

"We can't win, so we release when we feel we're happy with it and when we feel it is an alpha version...." sounds almost like polyphony digital wink.gif  (joking of course u would never delay that long)
There really is nothing anybody can say to that as it is your project (and I for one do not have the coding skills or the time to write something like FSD2) however would it not be better to have a team of people testing it out in the wild looking for bugs or issues to help and to help you and helldoc and all the other people in the team?

this is probaly going to sound whiny but when will you feel happy with it as from the docs you are only making tiny adjustments.

Please dont be offended by this I am a fan of FSD I would just like to see a release of FSD2 wo we can help with the devolpment by reporting any issues we may find.

to me the xbox community is very much like the amiga community back in the day there are helpful people out there who will take the time to report back bugs or issues and maybe even suggest a fix for them.

... very nice explanation

but :

what will you do if your xbox just hangs up with 4 red lights of death after the first startup ?
Or what will you and your whole "amiga crew" do when you try to set an static preference via the FSD20 dashboard, and your xbox hungs up?

ah, and at least, what if your xbox wont power on again?
so, its damaged .. so, you maybe dont know how to reflash your XBR/freeboot image cause you bought your jtagged xbox in a shop ?

THIS, i think, is the trick which lets teamfsd wait for releasing.
there are a lot of different boxes, with different ppls

in some way, at some xbox, with some ppl could come a bug with bad features ...

let THEM check the sourcecode, and just wait.
grab your amiga back if it is to boring to wait .. monkey island is waiting
(loved this!)

I never thougt that there were guys who HATE monkey island.
these games are really big milestones
but ... okai ... wink.gif

i really can understood what you feel about the actual situation regarding fsd20
i hate it too,  that there comes tons of screenshots and videos, but absolutely NOTHING about a release date
only blah, flaming, hating, gaggaggagagagag, the stuff that comes every time from those mama-kids
(the flaming ones, not TeamFSD!)

but we arent allowed to claim about this situation
FSD is FREE, FSD looks great, FSD IS(!) the Future of the xbox360 Homebrew scene
i know that, you know that, TeamFSD knows that.

so they cant release any shit ...

Last but not least : HellDoc, Maester, please stop creating tons of nice vids without further release infos
that makes the comm hot and dirty ....
just make vids of really new stuff, and do your blogstuff (which is really cool)

Very true. It's a double-edged sword. I understand that this release is a major overhaul of the code and requires a lot of work because of that. I think the biggest cause of unhappiness is that people feel they've been teased. Videos and screenshots and talk of releasing in the near future. If release hadn't been referenced, I don't think there'd be as much outcry.

The talk here seems to be between people who've had a lot of experience with this sort of thing. My comments haven't been to be critical for its own sake, but to suggest that methods of release and communication with the community might need to be revised. Am I stepping into territory where I probably shouldn't be? Yeah, it's possible.

If you have an alpha release and state all of the things which are broken and say in the release notes that it's not close to being stable, people have no right to complain. An alpha isn't meant for stability, but for testing and implementation. People shouldn't expect more than that. If they do, they're idiots and should learn not to open their mouths.

In the end, I say thanks to the team. I'm really excited about this and extremely grateful for all of the work you guys have put into this. I can't imagine all that you've done, but I've seen some of the logs and it's extremely detailed. I can see all the bugs you're addressing and I'm thankful for it. Keep up the good work, fellas.  smile.gif

Wasn't working earlier working now though
just read through the blog "Changed the way the music starts ( Mattie is never happy )"

once again extra stuff added that is erroneous to the function of the dashboard.

Do we really need a credits screen?

"adjusted credits quality to reduce file size.
pumped up the volume a bit for credits
."

we dont need music in a credits screen

sorry guys your just adding stuff for adding stuff's sake now.

I feel we do need a credits screen. we've put a lot of time and effort in this, and spending a day
on 1 little screen with our names, a little tune,  and the people who helped us is something i feel
we're intitled to. if that'll delay the release by a day, so be it.

QUOTE(tiderium @ Jul 11 2010, 08:56 PM) View Post

simple question does FSD2 work as is? IE does it allow you to launch games, copy, delete, move, ftp and all the stuff we need it to.

Or are you going to keep adding stuff into it.

Who is actually in charge of the project? who can actually say to the team right enough is enough lets get it out there.
Or is it going to become a Chinese Democracy (obviously better than the album but you know what I mean) Axl was never happy till the record label finally pushed him to release it.

C'mon guys do the proper thing and release it already.

I accept I'm going to get flamed for this and accept it but you know what I want to see this great software released not  hijacked and all your good ideas nicked by other dashboard devs.

simple answer: no it doesnt all work as should yet.
nobody is 'in charge', we all have the same goal, and that is releasing something we feel is worth releasing as soon as we can.

And as far as the ideas go, they are free to be used by anyone, its called the xbox 'community', and
as long as nobody steals code or anything, we can all benefit from eachother.

This is in no way intended as a flame or anything, just be patient and I hope we can match up to your expectations.

tiderium: I want to see the release of the new FSD as much as anyone but come on seriously give the guys a break. Your comments come across as very harsh and critical. If they want to add a credit's screen then that's up to them they worked damned hard on this and it's their project so they decide what goes in and what doesn't.

One thing to consider, if you worked really hard one something like this, put loads of time and effort into it would you want to rush it out when you feel it's its not ready or would you make sure when you put out your work its quality shows the effort that went in. I bet none of us want to see this released more than the guys who are working on it do. They are working on it to get it out there, do you think game developers want to sit on their game for ever? no they want people playing and loving it.

At the end of the day there's nothing much you cant do with your xbox now with the existing software that this brings, you can use FSD 1.2 or xexmenu, go play some games and forget about the dash and chill out. When the new FSD is up to scratch it will be out and with the integrity the current developers have shown it will be much win smile.gif

Agreed, and this is alos a good time to be brainstorming on possible future features...not that I have any ideas really, but I was wondering something. I saw that this has an RSS reader, but I read somewhere else that it was possible to use RSS feeds to stream audio from internet radio to the PSP...is this possible here, or do I have no idea what I am talking about.

Also, I don't know if this is even possible, as it may be done at a different software level than this dash operates on, but it'd be nice if there were an easier way to switch profiles or change which controller is using a profile. It rarely affects me, but when it does, it is unbelievably frustrating.

Also, someday a calendar would be cool. I don't see why syncing a calendar with outlook wouldn't be possible (not that I know how to do it).

Also, after kinect comes out, I am curious if JTAGed boxes would be able to use Skype or anything like that. Not really a feature I'm interested, but I am curious how Kinect will *eventually* be used by hackers on the Xbox.

As for FSD, another cool *future* feature would be the ability to use the chat pad...kinda like how searches on the Kindle work. You'd just start typing the name of a game, and a list would be populated as you type...not a necessity, just something cool for down the road.

Okay, enough ideas from me for now.

yes i agree here, too

there are a lot of further ideas for FSD20 for the future
i think we should create a new thread if FSD20 alpha is release, so we can check whats up, whats wrong and what could be useful and handy

maybe there are programmers then who can catch our stuff smile.gif

i would like a gui Wii-like
here you got a lot of tools in one screen, since natal / kincet is available, there were tons of new options, if we have the possibility to code for natal
(the code should be hacked, otherwise kincet shouldnt be to much open source tongue.gif )

the idea of a chatpad is brilliant. MSN, ICQ or a multimessenger would be a dream
cool webbrowser / email client, too of course

Okay guys, I've started a new thread for feature requests for FSD 2.0 and beyond here: http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=717368

This way, any ideas can be submitted in the proper thread and won't be seen as begging, whining, or bitching. There are some out there with excellent ideas that I'm sure TeamFSD would at least be interested in down the line. I don't mean this as something to distract them from their current work, but once FSD 2.0 source has been released, we might see implementation of these ideas through TeamFSD, or someone else.

Why would they feel pressured? They could decide not to even release it if they wanted to, it's THEIR project and it will be how they want it to be....

Glad to see the latest updates hopefully a release in the next couple days considering they are in cleanup stages now for alpha.

@954 [954] 48 minutes MaesterRowen GNU General Public License

WOOO, seems like a release is comming SOON tongue.gif

Just a question though... how is it able to be licensed under the GNU when it is using code from the 360's sdk, or does it only apply to compiled builds? Please don't take this the wrong way I love the fact that it is under the GNU now and I hope it stays that way. I'm just curious to see how that works.

The code is not illegal to write. The problem is compiling the software for the 360. The 360 SDK is licensed with an agreement stating that one cannot release certain softwares, etc., but writing code which can be compiled into 360 software is entirely legal.

I'm sure if they need more help they'll ask for or find it. More programmers doesn't necessarily mean more production. In some cases, it decreases production. Brooks' Law is what it's called.

It's not compiling, which prevents it from being built and running. Basically--and this is all assumption--my guess is that the code was added, but there is some sort of problem which needs to be addressed later. He probably doesn't have time to fix it right now, but doesn't want to lose the work he's put into it.

People, seriously chill. You can bet it'll be on the front page when FSD 2.0 is released. It doesn't do any good waiting around for them to release. Just relax and it'll come soon enough.

Wow, I had NO idea that this would be front page news...thanks for your pointless 2 cents...If no one acted excited about this release, the coders might lose interest as well. It is nothing but positive and normal for us to be anxiously awaiting this release. My point is, it does a lot of good to wait around for the release. It build excitement and community. BOTH of these are good things.

Whoa, chill. I wasn't attacking you or anyone else. There's no reason to lash out like that.

Excitement is fine, but when this turns into a firmware-like thread, it really gets on my nerves. People sitting around refreshing pages and commenting on every little log is petty and quite pointless. Pet peeve or whatever, it's annoying when people take each minute detail, repeating themselves and others, and, in the process, clog up the forum with useless posts. If, however, people learn how to constructively express themselves and their excitement and add substance to the discussion, I'll have no issue.

Chill? It was just a joke (and I thought it was damn funny, guess I'm the only one)...I understand not everyone is as excited as I am...the easy way to avoid what you are talking about is don't read these threads over and over...

You became abrasive. "Thanks for your pointless 2 cents" is not a personal attack? You live in an interesting world. And for future reference: sarcasm doesn't translate well over the Internet, in case you haven't noticed previously.

It's annoying when the forums devolve into nonconstructive posts. There were some very good exchanges some pages back, but things have turned into one line posts and other pointless drivel. Is it my place to make people do what I want? No, but I think encouraging people to add to the discussion instead of taking up space is something all members should do.

Hahahaha...I'm sorry you're so easily hurt...grow up. You come in here with some petty demands for no reason. You, my friend, are the one who is "devolving the forums." We were ll having a good time, being excited about FSD 2.0, then you come and decided that we were having too much fun I guess...sorry, we'll try and keep the "fun" level down.

Oh, and please, don't respond to this again. You obviously don't share our enthusiasm and don't want to contribute to this thread, so just read another one.

P.S. Sarcasm translates well if you take a second to absorb what someone might have been saying before getting your panties in a wad because things aren't going the way, and I'm emphasizing this, **YOU** want, doesn't mean they need to stop. Start your own website/forum if you want control. Otherwise, have fun and ENJOY the conversation.

@hfmls:

Yep, looks like the thing's going to be releasing very soon. Very excited for the alpha.  biggrin.gif

@MrFlooD:

People have been saying that since XBR was originally released, then XeXMenu, then everything after that. I do hope this helps to spur development further, but it's the hardwork of people who care to make an impact, not the release of a one tool, that will truly make the difference.

It's damned ugly and I much preferred the trac but at least its there.

So does the alpha still have most features disabled like their original plans were a few weeks back?

Most importantly for me...does it allow you to update game info artwork and trailers from the internet (here's hoping)

It looks like most features are disabled, yes.

I haven't been able to get FSD itself to see my GOD containers or other games. and it's hard freezing whenever I try to view saves or Xbox Originals. I'm still troubleshooting those problems.

edit the XML config file in the FSD2data directory in the root of your HDD or USB and edit the tabs, like it says in the installation.txt and you games will show up and start to download the data press "back" to bring up the status bar.
