TheSpecialist's HDDHackr v0.90 - Adds Support for 120GB Drives!

TheSpecialist sent us the update of HDDHackr(info) many of you were probably waiting for. With the release of an official 120GB drive by Microsoft you can now use this tool to make your own 120GB Xbox360 HDD using a Western Digital Scorpio BEVS-LAT drive (that's a cheap (~80usd for 120GB) SATA 2.5" PC/laptop drive):
Quote

Attached is the latest version of the hddhackr. It works with the new 120 gb signature. However, this current version can not dump the hddss.bin file automatically from that drive, you'll have to manually dump sectors 16-22 with a tool like winhex and save them as 'hddss.bin'. After that, continue as normal with the hddhackr and everything will be fine.

Also, I'd like to stress that there are 2 versions of the WD BEVS drive out there: the 'RST' and the 'LAT' version. This tool currently ONLY supports the 'LAT' version ! You can find on the sticker of the HDD which version it is. I'll hope to be able to support the RST version of the drive in a future version of this tool.

From the official readme:

Hddhacker v0.90 by the Specialist.

* DISCLAIMER:
This tool has only been tested by me. It worked for me. While great care has been taken, this tool may contain bugs and therefore may seriously harm your HDD. Use at own risk !!!

* What: This tool will allow you to use HDD's that are not 'certified' by Microsoft. This specific tool is written for use with the Western Digital BEVS series only !

* How to use: Get yourself a Western Digital SATA BEVS HDD. To use this tool, you need a HDD security sector file ('hddss.bin'). If you don't have one, here's how to create one from a valid xbox 360 HDD:
- Dumping the hddss.bin file
Boot to dos from a writeable medium (like a floppy). Connect an *original* xbox 360 HDD to your SATA controller. Make sure it is the only SATA device that is connected. Now run 'hddhackr -d'. This will create a file 'hddss.bin' and it will save it to the path you've started the hddhackr from.
- Modding your Western Digital
Now turn off your PC and connect the Western Digital and boot to dos again.
Type 'hddhackr -f' from the same path you have saved the hddss.bin file to.
This will flash your FW. It will ask if you want to create an undo file. It is advised to do so. This will create an  'undo.bin' file that you need if you want to undo the hack.
- Check if it worked
Shut down your pc, reboot again to dos and again type 'hddhackr -f'. It should now tell you that the drive should work in your x360. If so, connect it to your x360 and go to your dashboard/system/memory where you should be  able to format the drive.
- Restoring your WD to original state
If you don't want to use your modded WD in your x360 anymore and you want to flash it back to its original size, then you can now do so. Boot to dos again and run 'hddhackr -u'. This will use the undo.bin file you created before to restore the drive to its original state.

FAQ:
Q. I get an error when I try to dump hddss.bin from a 120 gb HDD.
A. This version can't dump from an elite drive yet. You'll have to dump sectors 16-22 manually with a tool like winhex, save them as 'hddss.bin' and then continue like normal, with the hddhackr.

Q. Will this tool allow me to connect a 500 gb drive to my x360 ?
A. No. The information on sector 16 is signed and can't be changed. You can only use size where you have a valid signature for. In otherwords, if a bigger HDD comes out, you can use that signature.

Q. With which HDD's does this work ?
A. It currently only works with the 'LAT' version of the Western Digital Scorpio BEVS series. The 'RST' version of that drive is currently NOT supported

Q. Do I need the same size WD HDD as the size on sector 16 states ?
A. No. You can use bigger HDD's, but you can't use more than the size stated in sector 16. You can NOT use smaller HDD's than the size   on sector 16 states. For example, you can use a 40 GB HDD with a sector 16 from a 20 GB HDD, but not the other way around of course.

Q. Can I use the HDD in my PC again ?
A. Of course. The tool comes with an 'undo' option, that will restore the original size. For example, you use a 40 gb WD HDD, you used hddss.bin from a valid xbox 20 gb HDD, so the tool will transform your 40 GB HDD into  a 20 gb HDD. However, you can restore it to 40 gb anytime you want with the undo option.

Q. I have a x360 core version and want to use this hack to buy a cheap HDD. But how do i connect it ?
A. If you don't have a premium, you can make the HDD internal. One great tutorial that will show you how to do this here.

Q. The tool doesn't detect my HDD !
A. First, make sure you are running it from dos, not from a dos box under windows. If the hddhackr does not autodetect your SATA controller (if you have an nForce chipset for example), then you can manually edit the hddhackr to support it. To do this:

1. Find the two ports that your SATA chipset uses for data communication (see the MTKediting thread for more detailed info on how to do this), basically, you need to run 'msinfo32', then go to storage/scsi or storage/ide, depending on your SATA chipset and then look for the two ports that have a difference of 7 between them. For example:
I/O-port 0x0000EFE0-0x0000EFE7
I/O-port 0x0000EFAC-0x0000EFAF
I/O-port 0x0000EFA0-0x0000EFA7
I/O-port 0x0000EFA8-0x0000EFAB
I/O-port 0x0000EF90-0x0000EF9F
I/O-port 0x0000E800-0x0000E8FF

In this example the two ports you are looking for (with difference of 7) are 0xEFE0 and 0xEFA0
2. Open the hddhackr.com in a hexeditor and search for the string 'port=MPRT' (it is at the end of the file). Now, that 'MPRT' string is 4 bytes long: 0x4D 0x50 0x52 0x54. You have to replace these four bytes with the 2 port numbers (which are each 2 bytes long, so you replace the 4 bytes in total), so in the example above you replace these four bytes with: '0xEF 0xE0 0xEF 0xA0'.
3. If you then start the hddhackr, it will automatically detect that you have edited that string, so it will skip the SATA autodetector and instead use the port numbers you've supplied.

Q. Could you do this for my Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung or whatever drive too?
A. Yes, but I don't have plans to do so. The cheapest WD drive (40 gb) ships for about $50 and thus is one of the cheapest. It is a lot of work to
convert this tool for usage with other brands and I don't think it is worth the trouble.

Q. How do I find out if my BEVS drive is a 'LAT' drive ?
A. It's printed on the sticker of the drive, in the model name. For example: WD1200BEVS-60LAT0

Q. Will there be support for the RST drive in the future ?
A. I'll hope to receive an RST drive soon and then hopefully can find out what's going wrong and be able to support it in a future version of this tool.

Q. Where can I donate ?
A. Nowhere. Just enjoy

Thanks to: Team MODFREAKz for his initial logic board experiments, Loser for his findings on the sector 16, Antman1 and Rutger1413 for supplying info about the new 120 gb signature and everybody else at XS/XBH.

Great! But not until the thing can become an XBMC, I don't see the need for larger hd yet! But great news for the scene.

sorry to double post but thought others here may want to see this as well..

Here is how to get sectors 16-22 from the 120gb drive.

1.) Google for and download HexWorkshop and install.
2.) Attach 120GB drive to PC and turn on PC back into Windows.
3.) Open HexWorkshop, Click on "Disk" then "Open Drive"
4.) Select "Physical Drives" in the drop down and select the 120GB Drive from here
5.) Now Click "Disk" and then "Save Sectors"
6.) Now in the "Starting Sector" section put 16 and "Ending Sector" put 22
7.) In the "Target File" box type the location were you want to save the hddss.bin file and call it hddss.bin example: "c:\hddss.bin"
8.) Now on hddhackr skip the step of making the hddss.bin file from original drive and go to the flashing steps! Hope this helps.

____ Final Steps on hddhacker after obtaining your sectors (Per Readme File)________
*Now turn off your PC and make sure it is the only SATA device that is connected. Boot up to Dos with a floppy or more reccommended a flash drive.

* Modding your Western Digital *
Now turn off your PC and connect the Western Digital and boot to dos again.
Type 'hddhackr -f' from the same path you have saved the hddss.bin file to.
This will flash your FW. It will ask if you want to create an undo file. It
is advised to do so. This will create an 'undo.bin' file that you need if
you want to undo the hack.

* Check if it worked *
Shut down your pc, reboot again to dos and again type 'hddhackr -f'. It
should now tell you that the drive should work in your x360. If so, connect
it to your x360 and go to your dashboard/system/memory where you should be
able to format the drive.

One last thing I also forgot to mention. it was also pointed out to me that if you have the USB cable that came with the 120GB HDD in the package that you to use to transfer your data, you can hook that up to your PC with your 120GB HDD and get the sectors that way without even opening the M$ Hard Drive!

Hats off to TheSpecialist he is tha man!

But do we actually have to have an official 120GB drive to get the hddss.bin from?

Since the 120GB HDD from MS retails for close to $200 and the typical HDD you would need to get for this would run about $80, I would say yes - this will save you some a decent amount of money.  Of course, if you don't have any experience hacking the xbox, you may want to think twice about doing this yourself.

The one thing I don't see mentioned is the ability to transfer content from your current 20GB model.  I apologize if this has been covered somewhere else, but I haven't seen that mentioned here before.  Of course, that was never a topic I thought about looking into until now.

When I heard the story in the news about the Elite version coming out - more importantly, the ability to upgrade to a bigger HDD - I heard that it would be possible to do a one time transfer of your content to the bigger drive, but you would never be able to transfer back to the smaller drive or any other drive.  Of course, that seemed a little odd to me, but I didn't bother checking to see if that was really the case.

Someone (with a 120gb hdd kit) should offer a service to upgrade HDDs to 120GB for $100 or so..

Didn't someone say that your account can get banned from live for doing this? I would like to eventually just replace my 20gb with a 120gb but it is not worth it if I am going to get banned.

I attempted to take my saves and other content from my 20gb and use xplorer360 to transfer it all over and it came over and made the drive corrupted.  The HDD comes with a disk and cable to transfer the data.  maybe there is more that can be done but too early to tell.

Just to end any possible trouble before it starts, do NOT ask where to find the "hddss.bin" file here. It contains copyrighted material, and as such is not allowed here.

Anyone asking for the hddss.bin file or posting links/information on where to get the file will be BANNED. This is your first and FINAL warning. This thread will be hard moderated and closely watched. Keep it clean guys!

Many thanks to the TheSpecialist.

Personally I think MS would be stupid to ban people for increasing their storage via this method. It's not like anything malicious is taking place. People are going to use this hack to store more free & paid content on their existing box.

BTW** Can you tell if its a LAT or RST by looking at the box? Or do you take the risk when you buy it since its only labeled on the actual HD?

Okay, here's a question.

Is the Security Sector on the 120GB Elite HDD the same for all drives, or does each drive have a unique SS?

The latest news on this prior to the 120 Gb version I believe, was that a cloned HDD SS on Xbox-Live would get banned (original and any clones).  So unless you want to fill the 120 Gb with locally obtained material and keep it off Live, then I fail to see the buzz here.  It's not like anybody is going to publically give away their SS - if they do then it'll be banned within hours...

The SS is COPYRIGHT because it contains a PNG of the Microsoft logo - MS were very clever here - copy it and you are copying a 'copyright' not just a series of 1's and 0's ... sad.gif

if you truly get banned from live because the HDDsignature is not unique then that's a big bummer...

maybe 360's have not been banned as of yet, but maybe this app will get 360's banned, because of the noobusers who think they can safely upgrade...

so basically if someone dumped the 120GB signature of his harddrive, he and everyone else who uses it get banned? THX 4 SHARING!!! +P

wouldn't it be easy for those who do want to get on Xboxlive, that this app can copy the unique signature from the 20GB > 120GB ?

so those with an original 20GB, can upgrade to 120GB without getting banned.

You can copy the 20Gb Sig, but then your 120Gb turns into a 20Gb HDD - ie not a lot of use ...  grr.gif

$179 for MS 120 GB HDD or perhaps $259 for 2 120 GB HDD.  Seems that an individual could clone his own official MS 120 GB HDD and have 2 HDD.  If a person already has a 20 GB HDD, they could use that housing with the HDD clone and switch back and forth between the two HDD in the same machine with no suspected XBOX LIVE problems, right?

Once you format it to Linux it's whatever size the drive normally would be, you could already do this with the linux hack (put any size drive in you want).

I am a bit confussed here, maybe I have completely missed something. You still must have the original code from a 120gig HardDrive. So you still need to purchase Microsofts 120 then extract the key and format the replacement HD with that key. Unless I missed the boat it is unique to the HD and is differant on all of them? So you must still own a Micro$oft 120 gig drive right? Some of you are acting like you can just go out and buy a HD and make it work without this key. Am I clear on this? Attack at will!

And no, I dont have a 360 just look'n out for the noobs

So far the only reason to do this is so that you could buy a 120GB drive, clone it, and have a bunch of 120GB drives (of which you can only use 1 at a time)?

I guess that will be useful for some people, but for me there isn't 120GB of stuff I want off xbox live lol. I'd rather download HD stuff to my PC and stream it then have tons of HDD's laying around...

I would suspect that MS$ will eventually add some sort of firmware check to make sure the drive is "original". Don't the drives have manufacture codes, etc? The probability of them doing this is only in the 1/4 range though I suppose...

All that being said, still pretty cool that they figured this out. Good work.

The SS is COPYRIGHT because it contains a PNG of the Microsoft logo - MS were very clever here - copy it and you are copying a 'copyright' not just a series of 1's and 0's ... sad.gif

Wouldn't it be possible to copy a blank png over it or would that corrupt the ss file? Also, would it be legal to remove that png part of the file and make par files to repair the file then give those out? Lastly, would I get banned for cloning my drive when I get my elite and playing online with the clone or is this unknown at this point?

I am a bit confussed here, maybe I have completely missed something. You still must have the original code from a 120gig HardDrive. So you still need to purchase Microsofts 120 then extract the key and format the replacement HD with that key. Unless I missed the boat it is unique to the HD and is differant on all of them? So you must still own a Micro$oft 120 gig drive right? Some of you are acting like you can just go out and buy a HD and make it work without this key. Am I clear on this? Attack at will!

I would like some confirmation on this as well.

That data is in the sectors read from the original Microsoft Xbox 360 HDD. I think I remember seeing the drive model number written there. If I remember correctly, then the only way to determine if the drive is an original is to compare the boot up, data access times, etc. that would differ dramatically from the original HDD.

What would be really nice to do now actually, is to figure out what the heck is all that data that has been copied from sectors 16 to 32. In other words, what is really stored there.

Someone just make the file and then we can use a hex editor to put in the HD model code.

Like where all the code is just put [Insert code here]

That way we dont go to go through such a long dramatic process.

The nice part about this is just dont post the serial number of the HD online.  Of course, microsoft will proabbly be looking for multiple HD's with the same serial number on xbox live.  But if they don't.  Then you can borrow them out to friends and etc. smile.gif

But making the file would be much simpliar.  Then all we need is a runme.bat  file an that will make the whole image of the HD what you need smile.gif

Pretty simple if you ask me.

Anyways.  Microsoft is not checking this at this point.

I meant [insert serial number here] or whatever code you need from the HD.

i have been reading around and it seems as though even if you had a external sata connection, you still need to worry about powering the 360 hard drive.

doesn't the 360 give the 360 hard drive data connection AND power through its sata connection?  what is the difference between the 360's sata connection and a regular pc's sata connection?

the reason i ask is to see if it is at possible to have the 360 hard drive connected to the pc without opening the enclosure and thus voiding your warranty.

So what would happen if I extract the hdss file from my existing 20g 360 drive, and tried to apply it to one of the 'hackable' 120gig WD drives using this tool. Would the 360 not boot? Would I get booted (from live)? TheSpecialist's release says that the size in sector 16 is signed, and must be a valid size... so would it work if I took my drives ss and changed sector 16 to (the now valid) 120gb size? Would that work? The drive key would still be 'unique' and the size is valid. Maybe?

Clever work, but it seems like a waste of time just to "save" $120. If I assume 2 hours of labor to make this work (and I still have to figure out how to move my data over) plus the potential to get banned, it seems like paying retail for the drive from MS isn't that bad a deal.

i know this question has been asked here already but i have read all the posts and there hasnt been a really definitive answer yet, so here goes.

What exactly is the use of this program? from my understanding it is ONLY meant for cloning a hard drive u already own thereby allowing you to go from a 120 gig HD to say 240 gigs on two hard drives which u can interchange. BUT i ask you... who really needs this? honestly how much crap can u possibly download from Live in order to fill a complete 120 gig hard drive and have to use a second hard drive..

With the 20 gig hard drive i can see the use of this program to upgrade to say 40 or 60 gigs total.. but 120? how are u gonna fill that with live content. and if ur  intent is to just download a hdss.bin file and use that for ur hard drive then what good is the 120 gigs because u willbe banned from xbox live and therefore will only be using the hard drive for game saves.. 120 gigs of gamesaves? i dont think so.

So please tell me if i am wrong and u can actually use this program to clone a 120 gig hard drive several times so that ur friends can all have cheap hard drives. if that is the case then this is awesome, but if everyone gets banned from live because ur all playing halo2 together with the same hard drive then what is the point? thanks in advance wink.gif

You'd have a valid hdd that would boot fine.. but only have 20GB availible (Even though it's a 120gb hdd)

Thanks for the kind words everybody smile.gif

I've read some concerns about the risk of a LIVE ban. I'd like to elaborate a bit on this. First of all, no one has been banned from LIVE for using a cloned HDD yet. However, there are tons of ways for MS to detect you're running a WD BEVS drive. For example, there are low level hardware commands that can be used, they could check for read/write timing like someone noted, the contents of the HDD is different and then of course there's the same hddss.bin info that's used on multiple HDD's. So, yes, if they WANT to ban you for using a WD BEVS drive, they surely CAN.

Question then is of course, are they going to do that ? Are they going to refuse customers from their LIVE network who bought a HDD from a competitor instead of paying that $120 extra ? I'm not a laywer, but I seriously think that would be considered as an attempt to frustrate a free and open market and that would be illegal in a lot of countries. Also about the copyright logo in the hddss.bin file: as stated on free60, US courts have held in at least four separate cases that copyright cannot be used to prevent interoperation. And even if it would be legal, I still doubt MS would do that. Everybody can understand it when somebody gets banned from a service if they're caught using pirated warez. But I think this is quite something different and I think a lot of people wouldn't understand getting banned only because they've bought a drive from a competitor. I personally think that would quite hurt their reputation and I don't think MS wants that.

Also, don't forget that MS has said that they felt that their 120 gb HDD was fairly priced ( http://www.next-gen....c...19&Itemid=2 ). So if the price is really fair, then lots of people will want to pay that extra $120 to get an official x360 HDD with a 'plug and play experience' instead of using tools like hddhackr, so then there isn't any problem at all, is there ? smile.gif

So personally I seriously doubt that they're ever going to ban you from LIVE because you bought a WD drive instead of their own HDD. However, like I said, I'm not a lawyer, this is just my personal opinion, I can't give any guarantees and you'll have to decide yourself. But at least, now you HAVE a choice smile.gif

Enjoy,

TS

You'll get that message when the dos function 'read file' failed. Possible reason could be that the hddss.bin file attribute is set to 'read only', file size is incorrect (should be 3584 bytes) or that the medium that the file is on, is corrupt.

yo uwill not get baned.

first of all you can't check by read and write times.

Their is lag and etc that can interfer and it is impossible to be able.  It will be different each time.  However, you might, just might be able to look it up.  However, if you are really scared aboug getting baned.  Then use the original 20 GIG HD and just transfer your stuff on the 120 GIG HD all the time.   Problem solved. and only put the 120 GIG HD on the xbox when wanted.

However their is no official way to check this.  Just like you can't check a drive firmware hack.

However, it would be interesting to find out what 120 GIG HD Microsoft uses then you could just purchase the exact same one.

So don't worry, their is no way to check what kind of drive is in the xbox.  Only see how big the HD is.

If their is an HD key, they will be able to look that up however. (but jus tlike the original XBOX1) Their was no way to tell what kind of HD you had in your XBox as you could replace it with any size and go on live as long as you

There is always a possibility of getting banned......  Remember people back in the day thought they were safe, until Xbox live 2.0 came out. Just a matter of time in my opinion. I'm sure there will be another work around even if they do start banning people. Just wanted to point out the slightest possibility.

You're right, the *.bin was corrupted, now i've tried, and it works, thats a funny thing  tongue.gif

To all the guys, that are always saing the same shit - YOU'LL GET BANNED - thats not a very useful Post.

I'll only want to test this thing out, nothing more. I'm using in the future the same 20gig Hdd, why? I don't need 107gig of free space, for what? Watching movies? Listen to music? Thats all shit, downloading HD movies is better anotherway, and watching via MediaCenterPc.

For only gaming, a 20gig Hdd is enought. But if it'll be possible (in the far far future) to boot homebrew, thats something quiet different thing.

Thats it for me, sry for my english - it's not my motherlanguange, so have a nice day.

Did you read what I posted ? Each drive has its own low level different hardware routines, that can be checked for. One example of such routine is the routine I use in the hddhackr to read/write the firmware with, such routine is different from drive to drive. Secondly, drive contents is different (partition info for example), third: read/write timing CAN be used (lag is irrelevant, the check can be done locally) and then fourth: there's the double serial info that you just can't change. So even if you'd patch all low level hardware routines, copy all partition info and let's assume that the read/write timing will be too difficult to implement, then there's ALWAYS the double serial. So again, you will NEVER be able to defeat all checks and if they want to ban you, they at least can detect your drive by checking for double serials. But again, I highly doubt that MS is going to ban you for using a drive from a competitor.

Everything we do has a risk factor involved. Bottom line is M$ going to lose money from this hack? NO. Is M$ going lose money from banning people from XBL and risk legal action and costs, YES. So with that said I made my choice. I don't think they would even waist the time and effort to bust it, not until we can run ISo from the HD anyways....LOL. So I will buy both, one to have fun with and the other to be lagit. My Hat is off to the "The Specialist" great work indeed. We where the kids who tore stuff apart just to see how it ran and made it better. I still have a TRS80 with a tape drive running......how old am I? If you don't think M$ has generated more sales due to hackers your being naive and don't think for on minute there bean counters don't see it on the bottom line.

I think it depends on how widespread the hack becomes. If it become really widespread and most or alot of people don't buy the 120G Microsoft drive but instead op to buy a WD 120G BEVS drive and make there own after seeing other people using them online that hasn't got banned. Then Microsoft may choose to do something because they are losing a whole lot of profit and there is alot of profit here to lose.

$195 after taxes is hell alot to pay for a 120G drive. Talk about a profit margin!!

Microsoft cost in bulk for 1 - 120G = $50.00

Price for selling 1 - 120G Drive = $179.99

Profit = $129.99 not bad, not bad at all!!

So how can I revert my HDDHackr hacked HD back to the original state without the undo.bin file??

Can I use someone else's undo.bin file??

The drive I used is an Western Digital 80G WD800BEVS-00LAT0 Scorpio Drive.

You should be able to use someone elses undo file but it has to be for that drive.  maybe it might be possible to edit someones undo file to have the right parameters to make the drive have full capacity.

It´ll be cool just to edit the security sector from our original 20 gig drive to accept the capacity of BEV drives with the original signature of 20gig drive (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) but I´m not a programmer to understand what the 16-22 sector says ... #@$% it!! I really don´t want to spend almost 200$ for drive that will be available in our country maybe in autumn and for this price :-/  somebody from MS should think about that...

They sell it to a distributor. The distributor sells it to the retailer. The retailer sells it to you. Each have their own markup. This is why people are always talking about "cutting out the middle men". MS didn't make a lot of profit on this, although as the consumer we are still getting screwed. I guess it's good that it's an optional device.

If you're going to use somebody elses undo.bin, then make sure you don't write a RST version to a LAT version or the other way around, this will kill your drive.

What you also can do: open a hddss.bin file in a hex editor.  On byte 0x58 you will find the number of sectors. For a 20 gb HDD this will be: 8029 5402. Now change these 4 bytes into: 20DD 5009

Then run the hddhackr with the '-f' command to flash your modified hddss.bin and your drive will be 80 gb. Of couse, this won't work in your x360, since the signature is broken, but it will work again as normal in your PC.

Is there anyway to edit the hddss.bin from the normal 20gb limit on the original HD and change it so it appears as the new 120gb? As ive brought a western digitia 120g bev drive and want to upgrade it?

Just to end any possible trouble before it starts, do NOT ask where to find the "hddss.bin" file here. It contains copyrighted material, and as such is not allowed here.

Anyone asking for the hddss.bin file or posting links/information on where to get the file will be BANNED. This is your first and FINAL warning. This thread will be hard moderated and closely watched. Keep it clean guys!

and other rules as for not requesting software still apply, that includes hddss.bin or others like the Undo file.
It also applies whether you request directly or through some stupid attempt to cover the request.

soso,

not trying to be contradictory or cause problems, just a question.  I thought that the rules were in reguards to copyrighted material being referenced to on the forums.  Since the undo file is merely the original firmware for the drive, and as far as I know that information is not copyrighted as there is no digital logo like MS has on the hddss.bin, I would think that there would be no problem in discussing this on the forums.

If I am mistaken please forgive me, and I will not mention it again.

Fair to ask,

If it is part of the code of the original product is a no go.
It is part of what you buy and not identified as being freely distributed (on their site or other)

I am guessing to take advantage on this mod  you need to update to the newest dashboard?  I hooked up a newly hacked one to an elite and it shows up as 120gig but when i hook it up to a non elite, it says the drive is unformatted.  Im guessing its because it doesnt have the newest dashboard?

Got my WD120 BEV LAT, followed the instruction using my XBOX360 20GB HD to dump the bin file, and use the bin to flash my new WD120.  Installed and re-formated the new WD120 on the XBOX360, and it shows only 13GB free.
What did I miss?  If only 20GB is expected on the WD120, what is the purpose of upgrading to a bigger drive if you only can access 20GB?
Any clarification needed.
Thanks
Hackman.

To get the 120 gb, you should use a hddss.bin file from a 120 gb HDD.

Thanks for the info.

What is the use of buying a WD120 if I have to get the hddss.bin from an original M$ 120GB HD?  Rather buy the original M$ HD.
Meanwhile, will just undo my WD120, and use it on my PS3 instead.

Yes, you've inputted the wrong console serial number (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Anyway, I've just finished up a new version of the hddhackr (v0.91), it now supports the RST version of the WD BEVS too, should be on the site tomorrow

I assure you i have the coreect console number...what im going to do is do an undo and try it again.

What doesnt make sense is the first time I tired to format it it was doing its thing and it completed. but when I went in to look at the storage it said unformatted....i thought hmm

so I powered off the console and powered it back on...same results. I tried again and now it just gives me a dash error that says some thing along the lines of a problem has occured (typical m$ uninformative error) the serial number error is a different error.

What do you think?

The x360 obviously accepts your drive (otherwise it won't give you the possibility to format it), so the hddhackr procedure worked fine. But there's some problem with your partition info.

You might try to undo the flash again (with the undo.bin file), format the drive on the PC with a low level formatting util and then flash the drive again and see if you can format it then...

Not sure why you're having problems, it's the first time I hear of this problem. One thing that COULD cause it for example is a faulty drive with bad sectors. You could check that with a verification tool on the PC.

First I like to say this is some great info about the HD upgrade. smile.gif
Is it possible to use a 120 samsung drive that is closer to the 20 gig already in the system?
I know that the 20 gig is a HM020GI but what is inside the 120 gig and elite upgraded drive is a WD or another samsung drive?
Would this hack allow me to copy my 20 gig to a 120. Also after the hack can I clone the drives with all the content with either ghost or HD copy software?
I take microsoft or samsung generates and copy these bin files before they leave the factory.
What if I copy the sectors from the 20 gig samsung and copy them to a 120 gig samsung would that possibly work or was this not tested yet. I up for it. wink.gif

Can anybody answer my questions if the TheSpecialist is not available.

Thanks again.

Dear TheSpecialist,

Thank you very very much for the wonderful work. I'm sure you've helped millions of people from their nightmares.

Now, this is possibly too much to ask from you, but, I'm wondering if its possible to do the same for Desktop HDDs by WD?
I'll be very grateful if you could do some modification on your tool to work with desktop hdd series. What would it cost for you to develop it?
I'm asking this because 3.5" hdds are more reliable, faster access time, and most importantly - cheaper. Notebook hdds are almost double price compared to desktop hdd.

Thank you very much once again.
Tim.

To anyone who was wondering if you can use a 20 gig drive hdss file modified to report 120 gigs:

Though the answer is already here in the forum for the technically inclined, it's apparent that those less tech-savvy are having issues understanding it. Here is the simple version: No, you cannot use a 20 gig drive hdss file modified to report as 120 gigs.

When people talk about the sectors being signed, it means that all the data for the hdss has been digitally signed by microsoft using a digital certificate that only they possess.
By digitally signing an item, you are doing a math calculation on the data that will spit out a unique, and very long hexadecimal number, and then certify that the number is legal/valid. If you change just a single bit in the original information, the entire number will be completely different.
So this means that if you change the hard disk size to report(which is stored in the hdss file), it changes the number calculated by the equation. When that number doesn't match the number stored as the signature, the XBox will reject the hdss sectors as invalid.
Since the xbox 360 ignores drives that don't report properly, when you turn on your console, you should see no memory units installed. It's as if the hard drive was not physically attached.
The signatures are most likely created at the factory and written to the drive before they're packaged.

Now you may be wondering why we can't simply create our own signature after modifying the drive size. This is because we'd have to make our own certificates and the xbox has a way of checking the certificate used to sign the data, and will not trust a signature from a certificate that Microsoft doesn't own. This is probably similar in concept to the way Internet Explorer won't automatically trust an SSL certificate issued from an unknown company. If you look in your computer's certificate store(google it), you'll see a whole bunch of Trusted Root Authentication Authorities. Those are certificates that IE is programmed to trust to sign SSL data. You can add more to IE, or delete them.
With the xbox, the trusted root authorities are probably hardcoded into the dashboard. That means you can't add your own CA(certificate authority) as trusted. And THAT means that the xbox will not trust a hard drive with an hdss file signed by someone other than microsoft. And THAT means no, you can't use a 20 gig hdss file modified to report 120 gigs.
There's always an exception to the rule: If you hack the xbox's kernel or dashboard you might be able to fool it. But then you get banned from live, if you're even able to connect. Plus you run the risk of bricking your xbox with ANY hack you try. Then again, you also run the risk of bricking it by playing it since it seems to warp the motherboards...

I was futzing around with a 120G BEV drive I just got..  I had some concerns (see here: http://forums.xbox-s...t...3&t=645456) but being the impatient SOB that I am, I decided to take the plunge.  biggrin.gif

It appears to have worked out just fine.  I was able to format the drive thru the 360 and it shows 107G free.. biggrin.gif

Having read thru all the posts I could find, I understand there may be an issue with XBOX 1 games and a mod'ed HD.  Was that resolved in HDDHackr .91??

If not, can someone link me to the post that explains how to fix this?

Thanx

Referring to my last post in this thread:

http://forums.xbox-s...o...01318&st=50

I let Extreme2 Xplorer360 run for another hour but it stayed at 6 bars.

So, I stopped it, put the 20G back on the PC, ran X2 Xplorer360 and tried to extract the Partition 3 files.  I got this error message:

IPB Image

But when I clicked OK, it continued to run with a box that was labeled DUMPING FOLDER.  So I am going to let it run and see if it actually does extract the files.

Update on this..

I tried to do an EXTRACT, dir by dir...

In the COMPATIBILITY dir, it seems to hang at the 'st.db' file.  I let it sit for hours and it didn't move at all from that.

I don't think this is an issue with TS's X2 version, as it appears to do the same thing with the BETA 6 version of Xplorer...

First off, again, no other drive has been made available with hddhackr except the BEV type WDs. The different manufacturer drives use different commands and are just different /not compatible. If you want it to work, spend the 55 or so on one of the many compatible BEV Western Digital drives.

OK so I've read through this entire thread.  Is the only purpose of doing this mod to make a copy of your hard drive using a third party hard drive?  I really don't see the benefit in buying a 120GB HDD, copying over all the files, only to be able to use 20GB of storage space anyways since that's what I have now.

Am I wrong?  Is it possible to use all 120GB of space if I have a 20GB HDD now?  I don't plan on having 120GB worth of DLC, but now with the "Install to Hard Drive" option in the NXE, I would like to load my games to the HDD to decrease as much load time as possible.

Yes, I know that.  So pretty much this is a useless mod that saves you zero dollars becuase you'd be buying another 120GB HDD, which you would already have to have, just to copy over your files?  It's pointless for people with 20GB HDDs to try doing becuase you won't be able to use more than 20GB anyways in the end.

More simply put, I was basically asking if there was any benefit in doing a 120GB upgrade mod for people who already have 20GB HDDs.

Thanks for clearing that up.  So once I finish flashing the HDD and it works.  Do I just do a regular HDD data transfer via myxboxlive on the xbox.com website?  Or is it a simple drag and drop from the old HDD to the new one?

Also has there been any word on people getting banned from XBL by doing this?

Depending on what you have I think you could use a MU to copy over your saves and recover your gamertag on XBL

I used xplorer360 extreme with the sata connectivity kit, backup partition 2 and copy paste over your files from partition 3 onto your computer from the 20gb. when the 120gb is flashed, restore partition 2 and copy back the files you took from partition 3 back into partition 3. you will have problems  copying over a 0kb st.db file. just make it in notepad with the same filename. I can't remember what folder it is in offhand but you will know when you get an error, look deeper into the folders andd you will find the st.db file, then make the folders leading to that file, folder by folder.

I have no idea on the banning of modified hard drives, sorry.

Hi; I've got a problem, maybe someone here can help. I got hddhackr 0.91and wanted to try dumping the thing from my original 20GB 360 drive. I disconnected my computer's HDD and disk drive, checked to make sure the 360 drive showed up in the bios (it does, as a 20GB HDD like it should) and booted into dos using a usb flash drive. I ran hddhackr -d, and it ran, looked for the drives normally, said it couldn't find any and tried legacy mode, then gave me the menu to press 1-4 to select a drive. Every number said "Invalid input". Does the hddhacker app only work for certain sata chipsets, or did I miss some basic step in setting the whole thing up?

Well I highly doubt MS will ever ban for this, highly! Why? Because this or their own hack became available in China and Ebay is FULL of cloned 120GB drives. Now what does this mean you ask? It means that there will be a lot of parents and college students buying these at $80. Is it their fault that it's not authentic? No Can they take this drive to a friend's house and get the friend banned as well if MS started doing this? Yes

So that would bring SO much heat for MS it's unrealistic. This is unlike the firmware hack, that is. Because you can't buy the hack off of Ebay, MS knows this, you can't "accidentally" take it to your friend's console. They know it's something you do on purpose, a limited amount of people, they know there won't be accidents with people "accidentally" installing it or buying it on Ebay, like with the drive.

If they started banning for fake hds, they'd have to ban for fake controllers from Ebay, too. They'll never do it.

I was able to do this upgrade and was able to enjoy faster loads of Tiger Woods 10, but when time came to play Rockband 2, my game saves were missing...

I got an error saying it couldn't load for unknown reasons.

Is there a way to copy the rockband 2 game saves?? It seems all of my dlc made...

I really don't want to go buy a memory unit, but I will if needed

Thanks

Sorry, for replying to a really old post before I start

Ive got the required bin and hard drive. Before i go wasting my time, Is this still a good hack to do and is the ban situation still unknown or are we presuming it is safe now?? I was going to buy a China replica but I don't know how good the actually drives are so I bought a known to be genuine WD1200BEVS.
