Title: 360 And Mce 2005 Problems
Post by: RickDawson on December 09, 2006, 01:02:00 AM
The problem is that I can't get the 360 to work with my media computer using the media center extender interface.

The network is set up as follows (all ethernet).
CODE

phoneline -> router -> my computer
                    -> dads computer
                    -> Xbox360
-> network switch -> media computer
                                      -> dads printer

The media computer and the printer are downstairs. My master phone socket and my router are upstairs.
I initially had downstairs using wireless (g). I managed to initally get the media computer to let the xbox360 work as an extender, but the wireless link did not have enough bandwidth in it, and both the media computer and the printer kept being dropped.
We then decided to lay ethernet cable going from my router, and out the back wall of the house, down the house following the tv aerial cable, and into the cellar.
In the cellar I put a network switch, which then goes to both the media computer and the printer.

All computers can ping each other on the network
No computers can see the shared folders on the media computer, and the media computer cannot see either computers.
my computer and my dads computer can see the shared folders on each other, but not the media computer.
We can print with no problems.
The media computer can get updates, without having the connection drop, and I can surf the net with the media computer too.
All computers have the windows firewall and AVG (all up to date)

I can ping the media computer from mine, no problem.

all computers are in the same workgroup.
and all devices have static IPs

Simple file sharing is disabled (only the media computer has this option, as its XP Pro with the media center interface. xp home as the other computers have doesnt have this option)
This has allowed me to see the files on the media computer

Just got to get the xbox working

The extender software won't run on the media computer, unless the setup is completed.

I can connect to the media computer using remote desktop using my computer, with no problems.

My computer runs the media connect software, and the xbox360 can stream music from it no problems.

Things I've tried:
- Installed the software from xbox.com/pcsetup
twice I got to enter the number given by the 360, to put in. every other time I run the software, I get the following error message:
Setup Error
A Problem occurred during setup. Please run setup again. If the problem persists, contact your computer manufacturer for assistance.

- Checked the firewall numerous times on all devices. found the microsoft KB article which states the ports to open.

- un-installed the extender and media connect software and re-installed them numerous times.

- checked all the settings of the network cards etc.

- found newsgroup post by MS employee suggesting some change in the registry and then running the full version of the xbox360 pc setup software.

- checked all the permissions of the shared folders

- checked all the services in windows (run > services.msc)

- run the network wizard on all computers.

it kinda sounds like that network switch is gettin gin the way.  i know that routers and such do have a "made for media center" on some of them....  try this, take your media center computer and plug it into the same router as the 360 and then see if that works.  if this does work, then the network switch is the problem as it's not allowing something to go through..  that's really all the help i can give though.

no luck trying the MCRD group.

I'm going to get an inline rj45 connector, and see if cutting out the switch helps.

The xbox has only given my 2 sets of numbers. once when the media computer was connected by wi-fi, and the second number when I changed to ethernet.

did you resteup the extender when you changed from wi-fi to ethernet?  you shouldn't have to do this...

anyway, i do believe that the switch is your problem.  take it out and let me know what happens.

and the MCRD user group doesn't have anything to do with this....  this is more of a connection issue than a user group issue, you're 360 and MCE just can't talk to each other over the network using the correct ports i bet...  the switch is not switching right....  ;-)

I changed the network card in the media computer, and took out the wi-fi card, due to all the expansion slots being used.
I connected the switch and cables.
I then went to the xbox, and it wanted me to run the setup again.
so I did... and I then got the above (1st post)

on my next day off, I will get a connector to connect my router directly (cable to cable) with the media pc, bypassing the switch.

Got the media computer connected directly to my router, bypassing the switch.

all the media computer wants to do now is log me out of windows when I run the setup program. It will get through the first 2-3 screens, then log me out of the computer (as if I would log out to let somebody else log-in)

I've now done a system restore on the media computer, and gone back to the time just after the ethernet card was installed.
The setup program still won't work, and still gives the same message "setup cannot continue....", but at least it won't hang or reboot again.

hmmm......  try uninstalling and reinstalling just the extender manager.  if that doesn't work, then i hate to say you might have to do a clean install of MCE 2005

I'd like to do a clean install of windows mce2005 (my last resort), but I don't have any activations available.
I had one setting wrong in the bios (I think it was about hibernation - S3 or summit), and needed to do another install with it set to the other.
I didn't know at the time of first install, but it only lets you have one activation. I needed to phone microsoft up to let me activate windows.
