Slax v2.0 alpha1
Posted by XanTium | October 6 00:57 EST

Probutus released a new version of specially adapted Slax PC linux-bootdisc that allows you to switch the Xbox360 Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L DVD-drive to mode-b without connectivity kit (crossed-wire trick), so you can flash the DVD FW and dump discs in Windows:
Quote

Time for an update ;) Since Kernel 2.6.18 is out and the SATA subsystem got improved I gave it a try and implemented SATA support for the slax disc. To avoid confusion we now have a versionning scheme:

Here is a list of improvements:
1) plscsi and modeb command now integrated in baseimage (no dvd_base-mo package needed anymore)
2) usb and sata->pata adapter works as usual
3) modeb-cdb now integrated into generic scsi driver (which is used by libata)

Since I can't get my drive out of my box anymore (please dont ask... ;)) I have not been able to test it. If you have problems please PM me your dmesg output that I can help.

TO AVOID confusion: There are some sata-raid controllers out (e.g. sil 3112 and 3114) which do not support sata-atapi drives so please check if your controller supports atapi devices before complaining

Wow! Yet another great piece of software!

I swear, this stuff comes in waves. With the exception of an up to date firmware for Hitachi drives, I think every major piece of software has released a new version in the past week. beerchug.gif

Would I be right in thinking, compatability would be improved say for NForce 4 Motherboards?

Finally I could switch the Hitachi to ModeB using a VIA PCI addon SATA card. Then flashing went fine. biggrin.gif Great stuff, thanks a lot.

Just put the 360 case on top of your open computer case and they will share the same ground. Worked for me.

asus p4p800se ICH5 sata on board chipset

Turn on xbox.. quickly turn on pc..
slax asks in the very beginning to press enter to boot (seemed to work when I pressed enter but hang if I let it boot by itself... weird I know.. but it worked this way.)

got to login screen reset pc leaving xbox on...

got into windows and windows recognized drive..  NO BLINKING LIGHT???

I thought it was strange the light was never blinking at any time durring any stage.

flashed sucessfully   THANK YOU!!!   no more wire trick for me !

Did slax ever make the hitachi's center led blink like when the 2 wire trick is used??

Hi Majik, I have a motherboard (I have a MSI) with same chipset as yours (865 chipset) and  a ICH5 onboard sata.

Samething here, everything works perfect (mode b , flashing...)  but no blinking light.

might be specific to that setup??

I guess the important one is that it works  biggrin.gif

Asus P4P800 booted to cd, hit enter, it went thru everything so fast i couldnt read anything. then it rebooted by itself and booted to the cd again and once again it went thru the linux stuff so fast i couldnt read anything and rebooted by itself. It did this like 5 times i finally took the cd out when it got to the bios screen, it loaded to windows with the Hitachi drive in modeB. Flashed it with the new firmware (Maximus-Garyopa 2.2) and it went perfect.

This was my first flash as i waited till the 90 warranty. Wrote this in case someone else had something similar happen, they might want to let it boot into windows to double check for modeb.

Thats means no necessary light blinking for flashing??

yesterday i tried the 2 wires trick 10 times.. but my opa 2.1 flashed dvd never blinked anymore ... dunno why

Hi AlienZero,
I guess I would say the light will not necessarily blink ( i have absolutely no idea the exact combination of event that make them or not). The key point is that you want mode B, so if your drive after you restart your pc is recognized by windows then it is done ( the light might be flashing or not).

Note that if you are already garyopa 2.1, I thought you could simply open your tray, disconnect the power of your x360, reconnect the power of your x360 and  the drive should be in mode B. Never tried but that is what I have read around here. Certainly sounds better than the 2 wire trick.

Hi guys,

I have just downloaded the new slax cd, connected the xbox to the computer, boot up the cd with the xbox on, I see the cd running for a couple of minutes, then it stops at a login screen, at this point I take the cd out and reboot. windows starts up and I does say windows has detected new hardware and needs to install the drivers (however this might be related to other thing that I have installed on my computer) I do not have any drivers so I do not install anything and just cancel the screen.

I tried to go into explorer and into device manager but do not see anything new drives

am I doing anything wrong, I am pretty new to this, I would appreciate any help you guys can give

BTW, I am using an asrock775dual motherboard

thanks

Got my xbox360 2 weeks now, thought I was gonna end up with a 78, but production date was 13/7/2006 and got a 0058DJ Hitachi in it. Booted the new slax cd, the boot hung when it was trying to spin up some drive, but a few lines above it I could read that the xbox drive was in mode-b. Rebooted into windows, saw the drive, flashed it, and it worked flawlessly.

Big thx to all who made it possible smile.gif

i've looked through the forum and couldn't find anything converning this issue.
when i try and run slax 2.0 alpha 1, i get the bootup screen (where you type "slax irqpoll") then goes on to say loading vmlinuz and a couple of other things, then the screen goes black and nothing hapens,

if i boot with the first ver. of slax, the whole thing boots and i see the commands running through.

any ideas why slax2.0 alpha 1 won't boot??

Just a comment for some of you.

You do realize you don't need this to update your already flashed Hitachi drives right?

If you turn on the 360 eject the tray, and with the tray ejected unplug the 360's power source, then plug it back in and turn it on your drive will be in mode b.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for using SLAX with an SATA->USB hookup? I'm going to be flashing a Hitachi (probably 78 with the new toolset) but have to do it via USB.  I can't seem to find in any of the guides how to get SLAX working via USB...is it just native in this new version?

Or is there something else I need to do? Thanks for any help!

SLAX 2 doesn't like my JMicron-chipset USB to SATA adapter (one of these...)

So to hit enter is a must?
No wonder why I had no luck to get the drive into mode b.
Will try it later.
