I'd like to share with everyone my last attempt for today.
I have an ASF file, that windows media player will play, but on the xbox 360 it says that
the file type is not supported, yatta yatta yatta. So my bright idea was to make an MCL file
that points to an html file that embeds windows media player, to play the asf file.
Sure enough, WMP loads. The video starts to play!
However.. theres no picture, or audio for that matter..
Passing command line arguments to VLC works, but theres no audio and after 1 sec the webbrowser comes over top of VLC.
After looking over some other MLC files I noticed that theres a run argument, if that is in your MCL file the xbox MC will pretend that the MCL file is not there.
I'm done messing with it for today.
Flame me for trying or discuss or whatever.

many have explained this already on this site before.
I also loaded GAIM today (From the 360), and as before with VLC
the webbrowser portion of MCE covered it.

The thing that gets me is that I can watch them on my PC, just not on my 360.

onec you have the codecs setup on your MCE PC the xbox 360 can stream the files from your pc...
I havent found away to install codecs strate to the 360... Thats the hard part...

if you try and stream a video that XB360 MC doesn't support, it will not work.
I've even loaded VLC (A media player on my MCE PC) and played a video (Through the xbox 360 MC)
and while it says its playing, there is no video displayed or audio played. Also I have embeded Windows Media player (from my MCE PC, which has the proper codecs) and tried playing (Via xbox 360 MC) and still
no video/audio, it does act like its playing the file though.

you can re-encode the videos to a supported format.
I think some adjustments to the virtual machine type thing
that the xbox 360 uses for MC might allow us to view more codecs.
Today I also used the MCL files to link straight to a flash video.
The good news, MCL is IE based (fromt he looks of it) so it loaded up just fine.
However there was no audio.

MS has put in some kind of blobk to stop you playing diffrent files.
If it where mpeg you could rebuild with a fake header (IE Rebuild Mpeg1 with a Super Video CD Mpeg2 header) to fool programs into thinking it was actually an SVCD not a VCD.
Something similar to make the xbox think it was an MPEG2 encoded file and not a Divx / Xvid encoded file would possibly bypass it.
Other than that encoding is wank, cause you wither end up with shite quality WMV files at the same (or similar size) to the original, or Mpeg2 that are suaully twice the size of the original source file.

Thats the correct streaming format for the 360 and you can get high quality if you try...
No nonsense, You CANNOT use 3rd party video formats xvid, avi, mpeg, mp4, and all the rest so just give up until someone hacks the dash so it can be loaded with other codecs.
I use Tmpenc Xpress 3.0 and WME9 to encode backups of my dvd collection to WMV with excellent results...
A simple process with even a source wizard...ADD DVD FOLDER VIDEO_TS SELECT OUTPUT WMV Select bitrates ect and hit start encoding ...Now whats hard about that?
you can download a trial version of the program with 14 days use and test it for yourselves...

You can actually encode direct from WME9 and that gives good results too...
You cant use original dvds tho, You have to back your dvd up first with DVDshrink then load it into Tmpenc Xpress 3.

because I don't want to,
I enjoy messing with things.
Besides I don't feel like sitting around to re encode 1-4GB video files just so I can view them on my xbox.
Also I'm not going to pay for an application to to do this.
Mpeg is a supported format by the way.
