Title: Windows Media Connect
Post by: tonloc79 on November 30, 2005, 06:14:00 PM
Ok i like alot of people are haveing a horrible time getting my 360 to recognize my PC and vice versa. It says to hook your 360 up to your home network. Is that the same as just plugging it into my router or what. Anyways i got a PC running XP Pro with SP2 and completely updated, a wireless Netgear router(but my 360 is wired into it), and of course my 360. Im thinking i gotta go into my pc and create a home network but am not sure how to do it. Also does my 360 need to be plugged into my PC for a home network or can it be networked through the router? Any and all help would be appreciated. uhh.gif  uhh.gif  uhh.gif  uhh.gif PS: I have read every post and topic that has come through here, folowed all suggestions and still no luck.

I can't stand it either.  I haven't played a game in four days because I spend the time I'd be playing messing with this networking crap instead.

hmmm after connecting the xbox and the PC to the network do the following.

Make sure the xbox is in media center mode. go to the media center button and get the code it generates.
write it down.

go to the next screen witch says Leave the 360 on this screen untill you set your PC up.

Go to your pc... then launch a web browser.
in the address bar go to www.xbox.com/pcconnect

from that website select the version you need.
save the program
run the program.
the program will set up everything you need to share. It will then ask for the number generated by the 360
It will run media connect service.
It will show your 360 as a device
then it will ask you if there are any folders you want to share.
bingo.
that should do it.

check ports.
Norton firewall is a h8r. make sure to open the ports needed (im not sure what they are off the top of my head)
Ports on the router. routers h8 the game as well.

We're using Windows Media Connect on XP Home/Pro, not Media Center Edition.  So, our setup is a bit different than that.

What's weird for me is that my 360 can see my PC IMMEDIATELY after I power cycle my router.  However, once I restart my 360 it fails to see the PC again and only works if I power cycle my router and 'search for PC' from 360 again.

*sigh*

I have to rerun the setup on the pc everytime I want to connect to the xbox.  If the xbox is restarted it looses the connection and can not find the pc when I go back to the media center section.  I gave up, Im guessing something is broken and needs to be fixed in a software update.

FWIW I haven't had any problems with mine... maybe I can help...

My Network Details
I have a Linksys router set to: 192.168.1.1
I have the Network setup STATICALLY on my Xbox360 to 192.168.1.60
I have the Network setup STATICALLY on my PC to 192.168.1.100

My PC is always on and as of this moment is showing me an uptime of 21 days (so it's been on longer than this program's been installed). My router is always on too, I haven't touched it in weeks.

I downloaded WMC from the MS website

Installed it

Booted up the 360 and went into the dashboard

Went back to my PC and added the 360 to the list of allowed devices

selected the folders I wanted to share.

Went back to the Xbox and selected Computer from the list of places to look for media..

commenced Streaming of music

I've shut down and booted back up the Xbox several times since and had no problems re-connecting

The reason I have the IPs statically set is because I have several routers on my network and without statically setting the IP and Gateway to the router I'm attempting to connect to devices typically get confused and connect to the wrong thing.

This is what I believe is stopping everyone... (well most people) check your XP firewall settings and make sure it is allowing this...

I think I may take a break from gaming tonight to reload my pc and see if I can get these problems as well... then maybe I can be more help... my network at home consist of this... Linksys router (in our make shift wiring closet  biggrin.gif ) ran to a switch (computer is on this one) from that switch to another switch I keep in my entertainment stand for consoles, etc. to my 360... all devices on my network are running DHCP... hopefully later tonight or tomorrow I'll have some info that may help  unsure.gif

Yes it is... And to give you some feedback. I am an ADSL configuration analyst for a telecommunications company in Toronto. I configure ADSL WANs and custoemrs LANs, so I know what I am doing. I have a wireless setup at home. Like I posted earlier I got the xbox 360 to see my PC only once, since then nothing and the only way was to connect 360 to PC via NICs.

I have disabled all firewalls on my linksys router, PC and my ADSL router. Still nothing, I think it may be an issue with Linksys.. so I might hook up a switch or hub from 360 to PC for testing
Title: Windows Media Connect
Post by: Kernal69er on December 04, 2005, 01:12:00 PM
Did some extensive testing..
PC wired to 360 works fine
PC wired to hub/switch to 360 works fine
PC wired to Linksys WRTG54 Router to 360 works fine
Problem is when PC is wireless to Router or 360 wireless to router then it doesn't connect
Not sure if this is a Linksys router wireless issue with 360 or a issue with my adaptor. I will buy another one from futureshop and test it out. But so far as long as its wired, it works fine

To make things even MORE complicated -

I have 2 laptops on my wireless network.  One laptop (WinXP Home SP2) works just fine with Windows Media Connect and my 360.  I can stream MP3s and view JPGs just fine.

My other laptop (WinXP Pro SP2) sees the 360 using Media Connect but I can't get the 360 to talk to this laptop.

My 360 is hard wired into my Netgear / Comcast wireless modem/router.

The funny thing is, the 360 sees the laptop on the network.  I went into the 360's system / network *?* settings and it said "Windows connected PC - (my computer name)"   But when I try to stream media, no luck.    The other laptop is shut off when I attempt this btw.

I have nooo idea what to do.  I've disabled Windows firewall, shut down every piece of Mcafee, Norton, etc. I found running.  Opened every port MS says to open and added the 360 to the DMZ of my router.  STILL no luck.  I'm about to pull my freakin hair out, it's driving me nuts!!

Depends... is media connect on your wireless laptop? If so then maybe. If not then NO

I purchased a switch today and ran CAT5 to my PC (htru the garage up to the family room, pain in the ass) So now I have my Linksys router in the BSMT with CAT5 to living room (for 360) and CAT5 to Family room above garage (upstairs) to switch, which is then connected to PC and extar port for 360 (for when I play upstairs)

Now, media connect and 360 work fine no problems from living room or family room.
I conencted back my wireless adaptor and Nothing worked again. Removed wireless adaptor and worked fine.

Wireless adaptor si now on ebay, lol  rolleyes.gif

I'm not saying that all wireless adaptors will cause thsi problem, but it did for me. And my wireless adaptor is a Linksys certified Xbox game adaptor, go figure

Other setup I have is
Static IPs (shouldn't matter if your using static or DHCP)
360 is setup a DMZ (better for online gaming, all ports open)

Hope some of this helps

Try some elimination first
Conenct 360 to PC via Ethernet directly (definelty should work, if not then you either have a firewall, bad cables or defective 360)
Then go from there

akodoreign's advice works...

and make sure you TURN OFF any firewall while testing this... because Sygate would block the connection EVEN though you told it to allow ALL (strange)...

and also... go to windows update (before doing the above, and get the media center 2005 update)

I just got mine connected.  I will share what I did and hopefully will work for a few people.

I ran through all the network settings several times, setup my wireless network, left my firewall on the whole time.

Tested several times with no results worth talking about.  This whole time the 360 was showing up on my computer, but the computer couldn't be found by the 360.  I could feel someone at m$ laughing at me.sad.gif

Went to the media page on the 360, went to media connect, past that code, which I never even used...

Setup the mediacenter it tells you to setup on the following page, after the code, and then went back to the media page on the 360.  Went to the music tab, picked my computer, and then started streaming some music.

Good luck.

Here's an interesting tidbit. I also could not get my pc to see my 360 and vice versa under WinXP. I have my computer setup to dual boot XP Pro and XP 64bit. Followed instructions I found to install WMC under 64 bit XP and now my 360 sees my pc and my pc sees my 360. Nothing else changed, just the os. I can stream music now to my hearts content.

Had the same problem, which i have managed to resolve, so maybe this may help somebody.

I'm using norton internet secruity, and it appears this was the problem, i tried disabling it, turning off firewalls etc, but no luck.

So i completly un-installed it, and suddenly my 360 saw the PC, so obvioulsy the problem was being caused by Norton.

But not too hapy about not having norton installed so played around more.....

I set a static IP on the 360, and the configured the firewall rules in norton to allow connections from that static IP, and subnet. But when you create a the new rule you need to move the rule to the top of the list, or else the 360 still won't see the PC, as one of the lower rules is blocking. As on norton, the higher rules have priority.

So summing up i guess a lot of peoples problems are being caused by a firewall, even when disabled. At least try unistalling for a moment and see if that recitifies the problem, if it does then your making progress.

OK...I decided to fool around in regular XP Pro tonight to see if I could get this working because that's what I normally have running.

I don't have Norton Internet Security like Dementor, but I do have Norton Antivirus. I tried turning off auto protect before with no joy. Tonight I discovered that if I went into the options for NAV and turned off internet worm protection, Media Connect works fine.

If your having problems with Media Connect not seeing your pc and vice versa, and you have NAV running, give that a try and see if it helps you.

I also have connection problems. My Xbox does not see the PC and vise versa. Getting nuts about this.... can those where it works confirm, that they can ping their xboxes? Because i can't. At the moment i'm also at the point to say that it must be a software problem in MCE or the Xbox360...

*edit*
Forgot to say, that i did a complete reinstall of mce, disabled firewall and installed nothing other than raw drivers...

Then from there I got wires running to the PC the Xbox and the Xbox 360. I have no problems with live just on connecting with Windows media connect. I tried running the install file for XP SP2 which I have and during the setup when it says authorizing xbox 360 it tells me it could not find it. I am running McAfee internet security 2006. I have the windows firewall turned off and the McAfee firewall turned off, but I still get these problems does anyone know what the problem might be?

KaBlue2000 - Have you got Internet connection sharing enabled?

I have the same set up as you, so one nic is my broadband connection(enable ICS on this), and the second is my connection to the 360 with a static IP. Live works without a problem. But have had problems with media connect, but this resolved only by completly un-installing Norton internet secruity, turning of the firewall did not work. All works fine though with windows firewall.

Sounds like I've the same issue.  I've a Devolo Dlan Highspeed85 network.  My Xbox360 can connect to Xbox Live okay, but cannot connect to my Media Center PC (and vice versa).  I've gone through all the suggestions on this thread, incl. firewalls etc but no luck.

If I swap out the XBox360 with a spare XP laptop and use the same network cable, the laptop can see the Media Center PC okay.

I'm going to try and bypass the Dlan network tonight and directly connect them to confirm this is the issue.

Does anyone else have any ideas on how this can be solved.

BTW - I did upgrade the firmware on the Dlan boxes and the problem seems to have occured then - I did have it working before - could be a coincidence though!

I did the firmware upgrade way before! I have 1.5.5.53. Btw, I am already in contact with their support. Would be great, if you could test the direct connection and confirm the dLan issue. I could give the support a link to this thread then...
Or you could also contact the support and link them to this thread. :-)

Just tried it with a direct cable from my router and the Xbox360 finds the PC and vice versa straight away and all is working perfectly...just a big ugly cable running through the house (hence my reason for buying the Dlan solution).

Strange how my laptop works okay with the Dlan cable, but when I swap to the XBox it doesn't (although connecting to Xbox Live works)

I'd already emailed Devolo for help -I'll post any responses to this thread - if you get any response also it would be great if you could let me know...

Response received today from Devolo to my "how to reset the Dlan units" - I've since asked them specifically about Xbox360 issues...I've also emailed the Xbox360 team for help on this.  Not sure this will work but here's the response...

you cannot reset those adapters but you can configure them anew and overwrite
the setting you have now.

Plug all dLAN devices into the very same multiplug socket and attach one of the
devices to the computer. Deactivate every single Protectionsoftware (firewalls,
Virusscanner etc.) and networkbridge. Now start the dLAN configuration tool and
configure all dLAN devices. Check the connection rate with the informer tool
afterwards.

If all dLAN devices are shown plug the dLAN devices into designated power plugs
and check the connection again.

Attention: The dLAN USB devices must be connected to a computer in order to be
configured.

Yes, they solved the problem. I think this should work for others too, that have connection troubles: The IGMP version used by Windows is the problem. It uses v3 and the dLan only supports v2. So this registry entry solves  the problem. Copy paste all BETWEEN **** into a file called "igmp_downgrade.reg" and double click it. I dont take any responsability for broken PCs, so be careful when editing the registry and do a backup before...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]

Junglist refugee thank you. i now have it working due to your help.

go to run, and type in "services.msc" (without the qoutes"
Find the following services and turn them all on...
HTTP SSL
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
SSDP Discovery Service

Then start the Windows Media Connect Service.

also someone else mentioned  NAV worm settings, I dunno if that helped, but if it did, thank you as well

Thanks for the reply re the Devolo connection - this has now sorted the issue - it's very very slow though and only streams music (Media Center takes 10 seconds to acknowledge any click on the remote) - but I'm thinking that maybe a whole different issue that I need to fix (I'm sure I've seen a thread on this somewhere in this forum!)

Ok, my windows media connect doesn't work.  I have a 360 and a computer connected via a router.  The xbox can access live.  When I run the install program, it does not detect  and authorize the xbox 360. I have tried turning off the windows firewall.

The router has ports forwarded as per the xbox 360 help site.  These ports are allowed to ip address 192.168.1.101, my PC.  I don't know why this isn't working.  It's frustrating me.  I can start windows media connect from the start menu, but it does not see the xbox.  How do I fix this?

Oh, SMB sharing was so easy ...

I was having lots of similar issues you were describing. This is what fixed it permanently for me. I have a linksys befrs41 router. By default in the router MTU was disabled.

To enable it:
log into your router with whatever password it is default is admin, admin.

click the advanced settings tab
then the filters tab (if it isn't there already)
Scroll down to where it says MTU and enable it
apply

this seemed to work for me so it may work for others out there as well.

I'm sure you've already tried this, but you have to have the 360 on the dashboard for WMC to see it.  If you have a game in the 360, it won't be able to find it.

In the WMC settings is Automatically allow new devices checked?

Also make sure that the protocol UPnP is enabled in both Router(if available) and Windows Firewalls

This is the fix for WMC not connecting to Xbox : make sure your UPnP (universal plug and play) service is ENABLED on the PC... Want to check it ? Try this tool and read the page :

http://www.grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm

After having used WMC for a couple of days, I found that this software is really eating away  computer resources and slowing down my 1Gb RAM, 160Gig HD 2.4 Ghz system, in other words my pretty speedy PC severely. After having deinstalled the WMC soft, it all went back to normal operation. I use a portable 2.5 inch HD + USB connector now to play my music on the 360...

Have fun..

I was having problems with this until I just reset my modem, and my router.  I re-tried it and it works flawlessly.  However, before that it wouldn't even recognize my PC...alls well now.

I use a D-Link DGL-4300 Gaming router and my 360 connected in seconds. I have the 360 wired and my computer wired. Ports are opened in the router and set to Xbox Live Profile. Is the X360 lan port a gigabit Lan?

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I'm putting this out there just in case somebody who's still having a hard time connecting is as stupid as me....

I also couldn't get my xbox to see my computer and Windows Media Connect.

I opened up all the ports on my router, configured everything, tried all kinds of things I've read about on this and other forums... nothing worked.

Then it hit me (like a ton of bricks)... Trend Micro pc-cillin is running.  DUH.  I opened up all the necessary ports on that program and of course my problem was solved and I can stream music and pictures.

Again - I assume I'm the only idiot who didn't put 1 and 1 together to solve this simple problem and everyone else still struggling I'm sure has a much more difficult problem, but just in case there's somebody out there as silly as me who might have overlooked the obvious like myself, well maybe this will help.

Good luck!

Could you detail how you configured Trend Micro to allow the 360? I'm having a difficult time finding anything specific on how to configure it. Right now I'm having to switch the firewalls profile from "Direct Connection" to "Home Network" whenever I want to stream music from my pc to the 360.

After long hours of testing and searching to try to get my xbox 360 connected to my WMC, I finally found something that worked for me and it seems to be very simple. When I first tried to connect my Xbox 360 to my computer with my Linksys WRT54GS Wireless router and my Linksys WGA54G Game Adapter it worked. But after a couple of days it stopped working and I couldn't get Media Center or even the shared music and pictures to work  uhh.gif . My 360 just wouldn't connect to my pc. So I decided to sit down and start testing. I noticed a lot of posts say that it works with a wired connecting but not a wireless. So I tried the wire and YAY it worked  smile.gif . But I wanted the wireless connection. So I reset my Dsl modem my Router and my Game adapter and re-configured them using the software it came with. After that it still didn't work, and I couldn't even sign on to Xbox Live because my ip wasn't valid for my Xbox  mad.gif  grr.gif . So after a few more router resets and configurations I found out that my Game Adapter was being over taken by my wireless HP printer which had the same IP. I thought computers were smart enough to pick an IP that isn't already in use but i guess not  huh.gif . So I turned off my printer and any other wireless adapters or computers I had hooked up then re configured my Game Adapter. After that SUCESS!!!! I am assuming that the reason the wired connections worked for everyone and the wireless didn't is because of a conflict with other wireless devices connected to my network. After I had my Game adapter set up I reset all of the other devices IPs so there was no conlift  laugh.gif . I hope this helps everyone cause it sure help me.

Fix in step form:

           1. Turn off or disconnect any wireless devices connected to your network other than your Game adapter.

           2. Re-configure your game adapter to an auto IP

           3. Go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup, follow the instructions

           4. Test setting on Xbox
           5. Reconnect wireless devices with xbox still on and set different IPs (as is not the same ip as your xbox)

Hope it helps.  smile.gif

HI im in thre same boat in ping my xbox and it fails, i cannot gonnect to my 360, I have no firewall
I have my xbox 1 working fine throu the same ethernet card why am i getting problems with the 360???

Did you get yours sorted out?

ANYONE TRY THIS FIX?

I'm not sure if anyone has taken the suggestion from earlier in this thread but it WORKS.   I have had problems (up until yesterday) with not being able to connect via WMC.   I went to add "windows components" and installed the UPNP from the networking options.   As soon as it was installed WMC works flawlessly.    biggrin.gif

I had the same problem most of you had.

I use the Linksys WRT54G wired to my Xbox 360.  I was able to connect to LIVE but I could not get my PC to "Authorize" the Xbox 360.  After hours of frustration, I did the following and all worked:

1. In the Windows taskbar (near the clock), right-click the Windows Media Connect icon, and then click Exit.
2. Verify that you are logged on to your computer as an administrator.
3. Click Start, and then click Run.
4. In the Open box, type cmd.
5. At the command prompt, type cd c:\windows\system32\, and then press ENTER.
6. At the command prompt, type CACLS STDOLE2.TLB /E /G builtin\users:R, and then press ENTER.
    The following message is displayed:
    "processed file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\STDOLE2.TLB"
7. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Media Connect.

After this, all worked well.

This is weird, after a couple of day, it stopped working.  I tried the above CMD thing again...nothing.  I rebooted a couple of times, nothing.

What was even more weird is how I fixed it.

I don't know what made me do this but I looked in the root of my C: drive.  I found a file called "Program".  It didn't have any extension or anything.  I deleted that file, rebooted, and all worked again.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

I've googled and googled and can't for the life of me find anything that shows me where that "Program" file came from.

HELP!!!  sad.gif

So, I've tried every suggestion from every post I can find and STILL can't seem to connect.  The PC can't see the 360 and the 360 can't see the PC.  I'm curious if anyone was able to connect with my hardware setup...

I'm running a Linksys WRT54G (v4 firmware) wireless router attached to a Arescom NetDSL modem.
Router is running DHCP
My PC IP is ...2.100
My 360 IP is ...2.101
my computer (XP SP2) is wired to the router.
360 is connected wirelessly to the router through a Linksys WGA11B wireless game adapter.

MS firewall has all appropriate ports open
UPNP service is up and running
Router firewall is disabled
Router has UPNP enabled
I set my 360 in DMZ

PC is running McAfee VirusScan, but it's not blocking any of the necessary ports.

I don't know what else to try. I can connect to XBL flawlessly, but cannot seem to get the WMC to work. I've even used a cable to connect the 360 to the router. I can still get out on XBL this way, but WMC still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Man why is MS making it so hard for all of us.
My issue:

Xbox is connected with my pc through a UTP cable and my pc is connected to the internet.
XBOX live is working perfectly.
Windows Media Connect is working nicely (I've got it running and I can play music on the XBOX360 from my shared folders on my computer)

When I go to the computer settings on my xbox360 (settings tab, below "Network settings"). The "windows based pc" is recognized, but the "windows media centre" isn't.

I've got all the latest windows updates installed on my XP:sp2 and (see above) installd the WMC. But my xbox still won't recognize my pc as a Media Centre.
If I open the mediacentre section on the xbox, it just "stops" at the screen where it says I need to install that www.xbox.com/pcsetup/ thingy. During that screen I succesfully installed the WMC, but still no response from my xbox360.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Hi All,

I had this exact problem and after many hours of pulling my hair out I suddenly worked out what the problem is?

It's all down to the communcation between x360 ---> Router(Gateway) and Router(Gateway) ---> PC IP addresses and how you set it up on each unit.

Here are my settings:

Xbox 360 Manual Settings:
IP Address: 192.168.002.001
Subnet: 255.255.255.000
Gateway IP Address: 192.168.002.001 - This is your routers address

Router(Gateway) Manual Settings:
IP Address: 192.168.002.005
You will need to put your Xbox outside of your routers firewall if one is built in, within your router you will find a feature called DMZ, all you need to do is insert the Xbox's IP address in this feature and enable it.
This allows the NAT router to have an open connection on your Xbox for excellent online game play.

PC/Laptop Manual Settings:
Change your wireless TCP properties.
IP Address: 192.168.2.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.000
Gateway IP Address: 192.168.002.005

Next you have to check the exceptions in the firewall/s for 'Windows Media Connect', the best way to make sure that they have been set is to delete all the entries for it and download a fresh copy of Windows Media Connect XBOX 360 S/W ----> Here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup/XPSP2.htm and install it after you have made this last change to your PC.

You need to setup you home network if you have not already done so, goto Network connections -  Set up a home or small office network and follow the wizard and reboot.

Next reboot your Xbox and Router.

Next install the Windows Media Connect XBOX  360 S/W that you downloaded earlier, follow the wizard to the finish and then Windows Media Connect will pop up, if it says 'Folder sharing Started' then simply test the media connection on your xbox with the manual settings you have put in.

If the folder sharing has not started, go into the Windows Media Connect settings and click start, some times it refuses to connect, just keep clicking the start button until it connects(usually 3 times).

Thats it, you should be all done, now goto the Xbox dashboard and select a feature in media.

Good Luck....!

Any questions, just ask - I have done these settings 5 times now and have had no problems.
