Multimedia capabilities are pathetic to say the least. PS3 is so much better in this regard with built in wireless network instead of paying $175 (Australian dollars) for$30 hardware.
Xbox 360 could have killed the PS3 and Wii if it had built in internet browser, able to play DVDs from your PC, built in wireless network card and more compatibility with media files.
1. then why don't you either
A. run a wire, as wireless sucks
B. get a cheap $30 adapter instead of the official one. it will work fine.
2. i actually have a device that has a web browser. in fact, i'm using it right now to type this message. its called my computer
a web browser on a console is a useless gimmick.
why not play your dvd's in your 360? it does have a built in dvd player after all.
a built in wireless card would have increased the cost of the system. the fact the 360 had optional accessories, so people who didn't need them didn't have to pay for them, is why the 360 launched at 400 and the ps3 launched at 600.
the compatibility with media files is probably for legal reasons. there are probably licensing fees for some formats that aren't supported, and others may not be supported due to licensing requirements

I'm in the same boat as you (or at least a similar one, we're on the same river at least!),
Most of the OP's complaints don't make too much sense :
To say the least, I'm far from impressed with the new Xbox experience. The so called "New Experience" is merely a cosmetic jada jada and some well needed content management done by ignorant marketing people in Redmond. Unbelievably disappointing Microsoft!
Most reviewers (and gamers that I know) have embraced the NXE, and I personally think its a step forward, it looks better and has improved functionality over the old "Blades" system. A console has to evolve to survive, and thats what Microsoft are doing with the NXE.
Up till today Xbox original (modified) in combination with XBMC (Xbox Media Player) is the best multimedia machine (for living rooms) on the market and that grandpa is six years old now! Why is that folks? Well I will tell you why: Functionality, Usability, Rapid development
The reason that the 360 dash is not in rapid development like XBMC was is that it's a genuine product, it has to work for everyone that has a 360, not the "Leet" few that have a modded console. The 360 Dash has evolved a lot in 3 years (plenty of new features added
Why a multinational and multi billion dollar company can't come up with something more creative is for me a big unanswered mystery. Is the whole Xbox crew in Redmond on crazy pills or something? Surely they must have have a chance looking XBMC. How can you not be inspired? How can you not want to do something even slightly as good?
Why would they need to do all this work, when the console is still selling like hot-cakes? They are not going to waste time on features that large percentage of the user base aren't interested in. The clue is in the name, its a GAMES CONSOLE! Its for playing next generation games. Why would they include features that are going to be used (mostly) by people who get TV shows and Movies from torrents (piracy?)?
We are living in the 21st century and Microsoft has still not been able to sort out a web browser that works on TV... This is seriously retarded. And this Media extender bullsh*t what is that? If I could operate my Dreambox (satellite decoder), my windows mobile phone and access my Linux Network Area Storage I would be happy but I can't so why don't you stop all that marketing blabber and be honest about the whole thing. Thanks to Microsoft proprietary software strategy I'm surprised my xbox even fits to my non-American electrical wall socket. Wake up and smell the coffee geeks, there is no such thing as a 360 experience on a Xbox 360 Bill-Gates-people!
Blah Blah Blah, spit the dummy, blah blah.....
Actually this takes me to my actual point and that is the built in lack of multimedia support because this is by far the most disastrous thing with the Xbox 360 experience, new and old. Take the media player for example: What a piece of sh*t! How many time do I have to click the controller to play a God damn song? The interface and the functionality is worse than the built in sound recorder in Windows 98.
Again, its a games machine. To play an album, its fairly easy, hit the guide button, go one tab across, music, choose the album, play album. What do you want, some kind of telepathic system where it plays exactly the song you are thinking of? Get a life.....
When I first heard about the New Xbox Experience I had my hopes up but halfway through the project, when "features" stared to leak out, I and millions of fans just sighed and shook their heads - once again.
Clearly there was only one thing in mind with this upgrade and that was to increase on-line sales and that is OK if the EXPERIENCE was taken care of. Were is the NEW experience??! At least give me a media player that plays Internet radio, an Email reader and support for RSS!!!
Are you that poor that you can't afford a PC? (Wait, you posted that, so obviously not). Theres no point on having a web browser on the 360, as it would look crap for people on small tellies and there is no keyboard. I REPEAT, IT IS A GAMES MACHINE..........
And now DivX. Dear Microsoft I understand business development and I'm aware you're in bed with Netfilx, and that you believe that that will have a negative impact on sales if your machine could play DVD rips as well. Well I've got news for you: Dream on! People will probably download even more because of this. At least have the balls giving your customers a choice. You force us to use third party software like Tversity. Why, why, why?!!! You don't think people know? Oh and I'm not living in America so I guess I have to keep downloading movies anyway...
Again, Microsoft are not going to promote technology that is commonly used for pirating movies. All the DVD's that I have ripped (which I own), are on an external drive, divx'd, and play fine.
Think of the potential this machine has...awesome piece of hardware and massive power under the hood. People could do magic with it! The Xbox crew has shown that their intentions with this piece of hardware is below PacMan à la 1983. Bill, fire them all!
It is an awesome piece of hardware, and it does what its supposed to. The sales figures show that most people are satisifed with it, and the good reviews of the NXE show that most people are liking it.
If it wasn't for the XBMC my Xbox original would have have had close encounters with the trash bin long time ago. Not even worth warming your feet on a cold winters day. But no, I love it and I love it because of XBMC. Please Mr. Gates make my Xbox 360 be a true universal 360 entertainment machine next time you upgrade the software or give the audience what the audience wants: Access, access to the box.
They are not going to open up the 360 for hackers, no matter how many times you ask (or offer to get on your knee's for them). The reason for this is that they are AGAINST piracy, as the game licences are how they make money from the 360, the hardware margins are small. If they opened the system up for access, a new (non-drive based) piracy method would be opened up. Microsoft is a business, designed to make money, people seem to forget this....
If you want a super duper leet linux NAS Dreambox Divx all access, then get something else. Also, you are a pirate.

Good job, you wrote that whole post for nothing just because of this one line...grow up...

I'm waiting for your bullshit reply
Well, if you were the Uber Leet Hacker dood that you say you are, you would be working on some way of achieving your goal (running these things on the 360).
Starting whiny threads on these forums won't get MS to do anything, so why bother?
Your efforts are better put to use elsewhere.
If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself, its a rule in life.
