Title: Connection Probs.
Post by: fredrik.n on December 10, 2007, 05:49:00 PM
Hey,

Im trying to connect my 360 to the internet for the first time, am I able to do this with this setup:

My computer connects to the internet using a wireless connection, my other ethernet card is connected to a hub/switch witch is connected to the 360. So far I've managed to get it to confirm the IP adress, but it failes the DNS.

Maybe this isn't possible?

I've read some of the suggestions on m$, but none of them are helping me with this.

many fixes.

1. Buy a wireless dongle for the xbox.
2. Hard wire (ethernet) the xbox to the internet via the wireless device.
3. Buy another wireless router to use as a repeater and hardwire the xbox to that. (both devices MUST support Wireless Distribution System, WDS).
4. Swap the internet (Internet Service Provider) connection over each time you want to use the pc or xbox.

The way you have your network laid out is too complicated and can be simplified by not having the xbox try to route through the pc. The xbox needs to ask a router or an isp for a DNS but it cant find the isp to ask. So a direct connection to a router that goes straight to the isp is just as good as the router can give DNS and do all the jiggery pokery for you.

It IS possible to get connected on your current config, as much of a ball ache as it is to set up, but a decent router is always a good investment.

Networking is a bit of a bugger. Ive tried to keep this simple for you.

Take the switch out of the equation. Plug the 360 directly into the ethernet port on your PC. Fiddle with connection bridging and internet connection sharing until things work.

switches are neutral and dont have an address. therefore it doesnt make the blindest bit of difference.

cwegga, u need to check your networking for dummies handbook again m8.

windows is intelligent enough to detect the different networks and do a passthrough but if it doesnt set up automagically then it probably never will.

If connecting  CABLE MODEM---(usb)----PC---(ethernet)----XBOX    this works ok usually.

The wireless connections are well dodgy and so far Ive NEVER been able to get one working in the way you want. Bridging doesnt help as this is for 2 ethernet cards or more and connection sharing ONLY works on 1 ethernet card at a time.

Networking is complicatedly simple.
