its plugged directly into my modem. but i tried turning it off and it still says that i still failed the ip address. now i have to use a user name and password to connect to the internet through my cable modem. but i tried typing in my username and pass and it still doesn't work. any idea why this is. is there another user name and password i should know about?

You're gonna have to use a router, either software based or preferably hardware based.

it can also be that your modem has a MAC-adress lock. Does your pc gets an IP through DHCP or does it have a static ip?

edit: sorry missed the part about the login. If you need to set up the connection from your pc, you need to discard the modem and buy a router which also functions as a modem. Or you can put a second network card in your pc, set up a bridge or ICS and connect your xbox to your pc.

Buy a basic 4 port router. What this does is lets the router do the username/password for you so that the 360 can have normal connection (this is implying you arn't using a special login service to connect to the internet)

i don't have to connect from my pc i actually have a laptop thats pretty much my do it all computer. i have to login to access the internet but does this have anything to do with the ip error? when i connect the cord it says that i'm connected through a wire then it just says failed when it gets to ip. i don't understand this it has a PPPoE thing but i don't know what to do about this. i have it set to automatically get a ip but it still doesn't do anything this is starting to piss me off. lol please just give some type of answer i can work with. now is the pppoe my username and password i use to start up my cable connection or is it what my friends says a bunch of numbers? if so i would most likely have to call my isp right? thanks for all your replies at least you trying to help me.
