Title: Issue Connecting To Xbox Live
Post by: tr4il on November 14, 2006, 09:30:00 AM
Hi. It has been a while since ive posted on the scene in a while. Yet, i recently invested in a 360 and i purchased the premium with controller, ethernet etc and gears of war.  The problem arouse when i tried to connect to the internet from my dorm room at a University Campus. A signal was read, IP address and DNS but an error came with the MTU stating that a maximum MTU wasn't matched.  My question is if i am basically screwed with trying to access Live from school (which sucks) or if i can somehow connect. Thanks for your help.

Most colleges (including the two I've attended) require you to call IT or the help desk to enable the proper ports for live.   Simply call em up and tell them what your trying to do, they'll know all about it.

Thanks. I called IT and they are giving the run around about how they can't allow access and dont know what MTU is.. Going to the University of Delaware i wouldn't be highly suprised if they are just ignoring the issue altogether.

EDIT: also would a router enable me to skip this problem with the MTU?

No because the router will still face the same issue with any outbound traffic, it will stil lhave to go through the campus firewall etc... as well.

uh.... how abotu we deal with the error reported instead of worrying about firewalls? MTU is Maximum transmission Unit. It has a certain size set. You want to set the same as them. Right now i can't check if the 360 is able to change that or not. 1500 seems to be the most common. DSL lines use something like 1458. So in short, change your mtu to match your campus' router and you can proceed to troubleshoot the next batch of trouble smile.gif

ok so in short you are saying, that since the MTU reading from the diagnostics states a MTU of 1358, how do i find out what my campus' mtu reading is and most importantly how do i change it on the 360?? thanks again

ok had you read the "More info" tab next to the error the live test gave you, you'd see the explanation. It is live requires an mtu setting of at least 1364. Since yours is only 1358 you're below the threshold. If you're using a router, change it there. If not, you're shit outta luck.

Regarding "opening ports for xbox live"; my school has every single port blocked and requires every device to be registered on the network (and they don't allow routers... technically anyways)... Live works just fine for me wink.gif So.. fix your MTU issue and you should be good to go.

On another note, it could very well be that your console isn't registered on the network.. see this post here:

http://thedailywtf.c...read/91049.aspx

So.. call IT and ask them if you need to register your console on the network (If you do, you'll need the 360's MAC address (Which you can get on the 360 in Settings --> Network settings --> Edit settings --> additonal settings tab --> Advanced settings.. then look at the bottom where it says "Wired MAC address" and give that to IT.)

edit: and what if i get a network adapter to try wirelessly, would that change anything?
