Title: 1080i Or 720p
Post by: vik_agarwal on November 24, 2004, 07:23:00 PM
hello,

i was wondering how to set the dvd player to upconvert  to 1080i or 720p ... i have done the settings in the MS dashboard ... my tv (pioneer plasma) tells me that i am outputting a signal in 480p ...

also, is there anyway to enable dvd menu functions in XBMC ...

cheers

XBMC currently does not support DVD menu's.

As for 1080i or 720p DVD playback, I don't think that's possible, but I'm not too sure...

In media center, the default is to upscale the videos to the UI's resolution. Set media center to 1080i, and it'll output 1080i dvds.

XBMC by default will upscale to whatever resolution XBMC is set to. You can set your XBMC resolution in;

Settings --> User Interface--> Resolution.

I reccomend setting the XBMX to 720p (1080i is interlaced). Then start up your dvd or video clip and use the start button to cycle through the different resizing presets

Here is an SVCD resized to 1280x936 while the dash is set to 720p

I will post a dvd shot later.. it looks even better.

I almost forgot to mention, XBMC is incompatible with quite a few dvds. I am not sure why. It may be the menu thing. I know guess they are working on it.

thank you very much ...

pretty amazing program ...

the performance is quite good ... i tested two denon hdmi/dvi enabled players vs the xbmc ...

the xbmc at 720p is better than the denon 1910 but not as good as the 2910 ...

thanks again

I hope you are not drawing that conclusion by the pic I posted.

The 2910 is nice but it is 3-4 times more expensive than the XBOX. The XBOX can also play more auidio and video formats and even play them over a wireless network .. oh and did i mention the games smile.gif

no ...

i drew my conclusions comparing to my denon 2910 ...

i am a bit of a videophile so i prefer the denon ... but the xbox is a remarkable machine ....

does any one know if it is possible to emulate the dvd menu feature ... ie can you set it up to play the vob files one after another so it feels like a more traditional dvd player ...

I understand you used your Denon in the comparison. I just wondered if you were basing the xboxs video quality from my pic.

I am not sure about setting up a vob playlist but it may be possible. Have you checked the XBMC on line manual at their web site?

no i didn't use your picture ... i got xbmc to work in 720p & 1080i ... i compared it using a couple of different dvds ... i am thinking about running video essentials on the xbox to calibrate the picture ...

now all need to do is to figure out how to get the information off my pvr (scientific atlanta 8300hd) and into my xbox ...

cheers

Press ''Y'' to add them to the playlist and press white to display the playlist and start playing the first thing, the others will follow after the first one is completed.

XBMC kick indeed ass although I have nothing but a cheap DVD player to compare it to ;)

I've got a 16x9 set, hooked up via component with my xbox.  In my resolution settings, I've only got NTSC 16x9 and NTSC 4:3.  How can I get to choose the proper resolution when it seems I don't even have the option???

Providing you have a HD adapter and the MS dash has the HiDef features turned on, you should have several selections.

Please check your MS dash settings.

Make sure you have all the 480,720,and 1080 settings on.

EDIT.. he he looks like X_Destruction beat me to the punch
