Let's say I have an Xbox (1) Live 12 Month Card, could I still use it to add to my 360 account?
-
i'm 90% sure an xbox subscription card will work on either system, a 360 subscription card will only work on 360's. hopefully someone else can confirm.

They do. I had a 12 month that expired in '04 and checked in through xbox live and it was still valid.

Do you have to start a new Gamertag though? Or can it be used to "top-up" your current one?

I used one that I purchased from a scene member and it worked great. You will retain your current GT as long as you add the code before your subscription is up. After that, you have to do an account recovery with the code. Also, it does just add on top of what you have. Well, it did for me. I added another 12 months when my subscription had one month left. If you have, say, six months left and add another 12, I'm not sure if you will have 18 or not.

One problem I experienced with prepaid cards is that if your account has a pending payment that didn't go through (mine was using an expired credit card), the pre paid cards will give you an error when you try to use them. The error was something like "cannot communicate with xbox live service".
It took me forever to figure out and xbox support was completely clueless. Once I updated my credit card to a valid one the prepaid card worked fine.. BUT then it auto billed me for another year AND I had the prepaid year, so I ended up buying 2 years of service at once. I think I'm paid up til December 2007 or so.
Support said they couldn't refund my money because it would go back to the original credit card (at a bank account which I closed). Their billing system is so screwy.
Just thought I'd write about this in case anyone else experiences it.
