Title: Different Hardware 360's What Are They And How Many?
Post by: Chrushev on April 10, 2008, 05:47:00 PM
So, how many different hardware sku's are there for 360's excluding the DVDrom SKUs.

Are there just 2?  The old ones (pre July07 that RROD a lot) and the new ones (post July07 that seem to not RROD or at least not as much) ?

If so... what is the difference between the two in terms of heatsinks/motherboards?

Does anyone have a picture of both opened up to compare them?

The reason im asking is because I just got my 360 repaired by microsoft and openend it up and they added a new heatsink in there that wasnt there before.... so im curious is that all that they do with the Post July07 360's or if there is more to it?

here is a pic of it:

Hmm... thats good news I guess, wonder if they changed anything else other than adding that new heatsink.

Here are some further questions:

1) If they changed the processor to the new 65nm ones (or w/e the new ones are), then the xbox would require a different power brick right? and so since the old one works fine that would be a pretty much 100% guarantee that they didnt swap the CPU right?

2)Imm not sure whats new and whats old.  I know for a fact that the searial number (on the back) and the DVD drive are same ones that i sent in for repair.  Dunno about the motherboard though. Would they be able to change the motherboard without changing the DVDrom drive? because arent those paired via a serial similar to a mac address so that they and only they can talk to each other?  Meaning if its the same DVD-rom as i had before its pretty much 100% guarantee they didnt change the mobo? Cuz if they had they would have to change the drive too? right?

3) From what I understand this new heatsink goes to the GPU... is that right?

not trying to be rude or anything, but how exactly would you know the serial number on the dvd drive?

I dont know the serial number on the DVD drive, when i mentioned the serial being the same i was talking about the searial on the back of the actual console.  And the reason i know the DVD rom is the same is because i put a little dot on it with a sharpie before sending it off to see if id get the same console back or not. and its still there.

Most newer Falcon-type board 360's Come with a added on heatsink like that.

And for most with the new 65nm CPU Comes with a different CPU heatsink thats larger and gets better airflow( i do believe (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif))

Looks something like this

(thats mine modified slightly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
