Title: Can I Use Any Type Of Sata To Usb Adaptor As Long As It Has A Power Su

This is my first post, took me a while to find the new topic button.

Can I use any type of SATA to USB adaptors to connect my xbox 360 HDD to my PC or does it have to have specific things. The reason why is because I cant find the adaptors build just for the xbox 360 or any tutorials on how to make one. So can I just use SATA to USB adaptor and does it need a power supply?

You can also build an adaptor to connect directly trough SATA on your motherboard, something like this (click to enlarge):

Don't have to look that professional, really!! You can make one easilly by cutting a SATA cable and use a small double sided PCB and a powerplug/connector from an old PSU or something else (old drive, etc) .

And by looking at this picture - x360 mobo HDD connection (connector removed):



and



Adding a 5v source (from PC PSU) to power the drive and a small piece of PCB to make the connector and you're done... Ah! then use xplorer360 to access disk contents.

I haven't done this because is to be used on a friend's HDD (borrowed) and even its somewhat foolproof I don't want to mess up with HIS HDD. Maybe I'll build one and decide later if whether or not to use it...

If you really need USB (laptop or old PC) You can also use a sata-to-usb with this...

So if I get a sata to usb adapter + power supply I still need to open the xbox 360 HDD case? what about the plug thing that sticks out of the HDD, it's not really a plug but the thing that connects the HDD and the xbox 360. Isn't that a SATA connection?

Hmm that build your own one seems complicated. Is there any where I can find a step by step tutorial on it?

Hmm I cant seem to edit my post.

Can I use one of these because a sata to usb adaptor is about +$20 while one of those is about $12. It's just got an enclosure or are they completely different things.

If you buy a regular (sata) 2.5" enclosure you still have to dismantle the xbox HDD case. But that'll work fine (lose warranty)

And yes, its a regular SATA connection (and power supply) but on a proprietary xbox360 connector (thats why you can simply make a somewhat direct adapter)

I also couldn't find any tut's... If I manage to get the time I'll try to make me an adapter and hopefully take some pics of it.

Anyway of doing it without opening the case? I don't really get what you meant about the xbox 360 connector. Do you mean its like how the old xbox controllers were basically USBs but different?

I've never done anything with pcb boards before. Can you explain what the molex thing does? And how pcb boards work?

I think I sorta get what you're doing. You've cut a pcb so that it fits in the slot. Then you've found out where you should cut(?)the pcb so that it meets with the pins of the HDD. Added a power supply port and a sata cable. I've never really dealt with pcb boards before but I think I sorta get you now.

Just a question about virgin pcb. How would you know where each of the connectors lead to?

Also how are you going with a step by step tutorial?
