Title: Should I Be Scared?
Post by: f5000sl on November 14, 2007, 04:28:00 PM
I have to admit that I've been lurking for about a year and when I am finally close to buying my first 360, I am a little scared too because it really seems to have a lot of issues.

I don't play games too much, maybe avg. 4-6 hrs a week tops!  Maybe 10-15 hrs week when I get a new game, then in balances out.

My old Xbox is working great and my old PSII was perfect when I sold it last year, but it seems that MS & Sony can't get their stuff together with the new systems at all.

Or am I wrong with this assumption?

Well I think it was like 20 percent of the 360 had problems, so I'm guessing the people here are part of that 20 percent of the units that went bad.

Since you said that you don't game a lot, why not just buy a 3rlod console from eBay or some other site for cheap and fix it up.  That way you gain experience and save money compared to buying retail.

I wouldn't buy a ROD console, there is a chance it could die again.

On the other hand, the new Falcon boards with a 65nm CPU seem to run very cool and stable. I've got one myself and feel quite confident it's gonna last.

BTW... The failiure rate is more like 30-40%, from what i've heard.

Yeah ive heard of a pretty high failure rate aswell, but that was with the launch consoles...

The newer 360's that have come out have had very little problems (or so Ive heard).

Even if you do buy one, dont be scared, even if it does die, you have a 3 year warranty for it...

Who ever said to buy a rlod console is... well do I really need to say it?

Dont do that, bad advice. Why the hell would you want to buy a broken console and then go through the hell of fixing it only to have it crap out on you again? It's tedious crap fixes that are described here. A reflow or a reball is the only way to get a more perm fix. Just go get yourself a brand new 360 and have fun. I bought a launch console and never had a single problem with it. I played the hell out of it. Only about a week or so ago I got the 3rlod with the 0102 error. So I'm getting it reflowed by xbox360pros.. no big deal though it does suck that I cant play mass effect right now. If I was in your shoes I'd go out and buy one of the new "Arcade" 360's.. They're cheap and have an hdmi port. Then I'd add a couple of fan mods or just buy one of the intercoolers and be done with it. Have fun! the 360 has the best game lineup ever.

It's not bad advice if you want to save money and like taking apart and messing around  with electronics.

I love all of those things but re-jigging your x-clamp replacement for the tenth time can get tedious.

Don't get me wrong, the x-clamp replacement is a good fix. I've done a few consoles myself and have always liked the outcome. However, faulty 360's still sell for quite a lot of money and aren't much cheaper than a new/working one.

If you can get a broken one for really cheap then maybe give it a go, but if you can afford it just get a new one.

I had thought about a 3rlod Xbox, but most go for $60-80 bare.  I am sure that buying a controller, power supply, and cables plus hoping to fix it puts me way to close to buying new.

My other issue is, should I buy an Arcade or better? My wife likes the games of the Arcade, but I want to HMDI port as we plan to get an LCD soon.

I can't speak for the new ones but the old ones have a really high failure rate. Out of the six "OLD" model xbox 360's that I know of (friends and family) 5 have broken and 4 were from 3 red rings. The other was damaging hd's right out of the box.

From my experience the old models will fail. I can't base my buying of the one luck one which will break in time.

i dont understand why you all are even arguing. if your xbox is going to overheat, its because you play games like 5+ hours a DAY.  at 10-15 hours a week, the 360 will be perfect for years. dont worry about it.
