hi there
i just opened my xbox 360 and found that the drive is not working probably and decide to replace it and when i try to buy a new one thru ebay i was told to check first how to flash the drive and i look thru here couldn't find any thing about that
i need this badly and i'm running original xbox360 DVD's with US system
thanx

i would buy a drive of the same model you have to replace your old one.
then depending on the brand/model of the drive, there are different methods for flashing it
just let us know which drive brand / model is it and you'll get your answers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

it's samsung
TOSHIBA SAMSUNG DVD DRIVE TS-H943 MS28
my xbox 360 mfr date: 20-6-2006

What is the drives exact problem? It may not need to be replaced and could just be an issue with the laser.
-
my xbox problem is when i am playing it give me a message that say read error and i try to clean the disk and change the disk still same problem then a new problem happens, when i run any game it tells me that "To Run this DVD please insert it on xbox 360 console"
i'm gonna replace the drive just tell me how to flash the new one cause i've contact a seller in ebay to ask him for a quick shipping and i'm going to buy the new drive
thanx
after i opend the drive the cd is not spining when i try to run any cd on it it's spinnig for less that 1 sec and stop

Since patience doesn't seem to be one of your better qualities I'll tell it to ya like this, you can read that info for yourself and do it, ya don't need me to tell ya how and I don't believe I'd like to now anyway since you've practically demanded I do so, and ya should get some before ya go messing with FW flashing or you'll have a nice brick for a 360 if something goes wrong there, ya need to take your time and know what you're doing to make sure that's done right. Every tutorial you'll need on that subject and where to get the appropriate software as well as what hardware you need are in the Pinned sections of Newbie Chat and the Technical DVD-ROM sections of the forums. If ya wanna replace the whole drive that's your call, but it really sounds like only the laser is bad and that's all that should need replacing. If ya bought another Samsung drive, doesn't have to be an ms28, it can be any version of it, then just swap the logic boards between them and the new drive with your old logic board will be your new drive to use in the 360, don't have to do any flashing that way either, but it's only a valid option if the problem with the drive isn't on the board to start with.
-
definitely, if you aren't a patient person, you shouldn't even try to open the 360 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
listen to RDC, as he's one the most experienced around here about drives.
but that attitude certainly won't result in many friendships around here
yeh, changing the laser would cost you less and no flashing needed, but hey you're the boss and we're just here to ask your questions (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

thanx

Most times I have to get told how 'smart' someone is, especially by themselves, then that's just not a good sign at all, programming and EE classes have jack to do with what you're attempting also. Connected to xbins here while replying, all went like it should also. Just because ya have an SATA cable or SATA ports on the PC doesn't mean you're good to go, you'll need ones that are compatible with your 360 drive and the new drive as well. The Textbook tutorial has that info in it and is a pretty good read before ya get into it.
I'd honestly try swapping the lasers between the drives first (can be done between Hitachi and Samsung drives, they use the same laser) unless the new drive is also a Samsung, then just swap Logic boards and give it a go that way. If the laser is the issue you'll be done with it right there in either of those cases and not have to mess with dumping/flashing the drives and will save yourself a lot of headache if anything were to go wrong while messing with the FW on the drives. If swapping your Logic board to the new drive doesn't produce a working drive, then you'll know 2 things, 1. The problem is on the Logic board and not the laser, and 2. You'll get to go thru the fun of dumping/injecting/possibly spoofing/and flashing the drive anyway, but there's no point in doing it if ya don't have to. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

You can just as easily buy a laser replacement as ya can the entire drive from eBay. Tutorials in my Sig on how to replace the thing, I hear they're pretty good. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) You could also try the POT tweak on it (tutorial HERE) if ya have a multi-meter handy, that should produce some results and get it to read a couple discs better, maybe even working again if the laser is the issue, plus it's free. Some lasers don't take well to adjusting though and it may not change at all, those results vary from laser to laser, but most times you'll see some kind of improvement and then will know for sure a new laser will fix it up.

but the CD is not spinning?? that's why i'm not trying to replace the laser

Most times it will not spin up if the laser is bad, that's a catch-22 kinda thing there. Even though it has to spin it to read it if the laser doesn't detect a disc it doesn't spin it up, or does for only a short burst and by your own statements earlier you said it is doing that, so I'd still look at the laser first and not the whole drive, unless you've done something to the drive that hasn't been mentioned.
-
i take a look at the laser it seems ok to me can i clean it? or do something caude now when i insert a cd it says open tray, so it didnt detect th game
-
So you can tell if the laser is bad by just looking at it? If that's the case then you don't need any of my help at all since I can't even do that, but I do know that just because it lights up doesn't mean it's working properly, the light can be on and no one at home, so to speak. Cleaning it rarely does a thing, but try it if ya like. Either the POT tweak and then a replacement laser is what I would do first. If you've already ordered your new drive just wait for it to show up and swap the logic boards or lasers and see what happens. If it works great, if not then you can get into the flashing side of things, you're making this way more difficult than it needs to be.

There are tutorials on that as well all over the place, again referring to the pinned topics of Newbie Chat and Technical DVD ROM sections of the forums that ya haven't looked in. If you're not going to be bothered even in the least with looking some of this up on your own to find out how it's done and what ya need to do it then don't expect much help, baby sitting is a paying job and I personally am not interested in taking the time to retype out what's in 20 different really good tutorials already that would take you a fraction of the time to just look up and read, plus if ya can't read it there and understand it then reading it here isn't gonna make much difference. If ya have a specific question or get brick walled in your attempts and need assistance that's perfectly fine with me and I'll do whatever I can to help out, but if you're not going to at least do some simple research to understand even the basics of it then ya can count me out.
