Defenetly try tortuga's method, it has worked for me the three times I've done it, and it's actually easier once you get the needed hardware since it retains the original heatsink standoffs, so you don't need to worry with all the guesswork associated to how many washers should you use.
And about using artic silver or not, I use that paste, but I think if you use a good quality compund and apply it properly you shouldn't have any problems.
i've heard that the cooler master one is also pretty good, what do you think?

the heatsinks heat up? or they heat up pretty good that they almost burn to touch?
