Title: Swap A Hitachi 78fk Board With What Other Version?
Post by: rmcelwee on October 25, 2007, 04:01:00 PM
I can't find this in any of the FAQs. I'm pretty sure it is on here somewhere but I just can't locate it. I have a Hitachi 78FK DVD that will not play DVDs (CDs work fine). I replaced the laser but DVDs still cannot be read. The resistance on the new laser is 2.7ohms. Anyway, I would like to purchase another Hitachi DVD drive and swap in my DVD motherboard so I can keep the same key.

1) What versions of Hitachi DVDs can accept my 78FK motherboard?

2) Is this what I should be doing? Would there be something other than the laser that can be killing me OR could the motherboard possibly be the culprit and I am wasting my money trying to use it again.

FWIW, I bought this 360 broken. I was told it was dropped on the floor and never worked again (for DVDs).

OK, I did swap the 78FK motherboard into a 59DJ drive so I guess that is at least one version that is compatible.

Any Hitachi board can be swapped to any other Hitachi chassis. The only thing ya need to watch for is the v78 and v79 boards are thicker than the v59 and lower boards. So putting a v78/79 board in a v59 or older chassis can break off the plastic clips that hold the board down, so they need to be trimmed some before fitting it in place. Putting a v59 or older board into a v78/79 chassis is fine, just might seem a little bit loose but isn't anything to have to worry about like going the other way.
