Title: Best Fans To Keep Xbox 360 Cool?
Post by: SpacePyro on October 04, 2007, 05:58:00 AM
I recently fixed a broken Xbox that, on eBay, was claimed to be working in 'perfect physical and & playing condition.' I removed the x-clamps and did lawdawgs method, and it worked like a charm. However, when I put in Halo 3, I am able to play it for a few minutes, before I hear a beep and see a frozen screen.  It has obviously come to my attention that the system is getting too hot...and quite possibly, the RAM as well.

I've searched these boards and I've come up with a culmination of ideas...I basically want to put 2 RAM heatsinks on the visible RAMs, and a heatsink on the Passive/Southbridge chip.  I also want to get some extension for a fan to cool it even more, but I've heard bad reviews about the Nyko Intercooler, as well as the Intec Glow Stand...

So I guess I'm just asking, what fans did YOU use that are reliable, will not destroy the console (like the Intercooler from what I've heard), and are relatively quiet? I've heard of the Talismoon fans, but I don't know much about them.

its not that its getting too hot, but when it get hot enough the BGA joints are losing connection. a reflow is the only thing to remedy it. adding more fans probably wont work.

So, basically, would I have to take the fans out and let it run until I get an overheat message, and let that sit for 2 minutes? Because I did that first when I had the 0102 code, and I thought that would've fixed the solder joints...

I was highly considering getting RAM heatsinks, that might help some...or replacing the original fan with a Talismoon fan.  Any suggestions?

I bought this off of a company from eBay and I was greatly angered.  They said they'd send me a better unit and an extra wireless controller, but, I want to see if I can fix this first.

Heh, you speak the truth....my dad even took a look at it, since he works with boards at his workplace.. said that it was designed accurately, but poorly.

I haven't found any fans better than some 50 CFM (I think they are deltas) running at 12v constantly.  Sounds like a leaf blower but the xbox is so much cooler.  Plus when I get my monitor setup I'll be using headphones so I wont even hear the fans anymore.

OK!
So, I learned something today.
lol.

I took my Xbox 360 apart, and left the motherboard inside...took the internal fans and moved the DVD Drive off to the side, still connected.  I had gotten the three red lights of death yet again, after removing the x-clamps..so I overheated the board for about 2 minutes.  Then, I put a huge fan on top of the entire board, with the DVD Drive still off to the side...turned the Xbox on, and it worked.  Of course, I loaded Halo 3, and I was typically expecting it to freeze within the first 30 seconds of gameplay.  BUT, it ended up not freezing at all, and my friend and I played until the 6th level with no freezing.

That's a picture of my incredibly ghetto-rigged, box.

lol!

SpacePyro...that's funny...and sad, because it's true that you about "have" to go to that extreme to get these things performing as they should.

Yeah, it's really not making much sense.  It hasn't froze once, so, that's always a good thing.  I just wish it wouldn't freeze with no humongous fan on top of it lol.  It's pretty nice to feel the heatsink to only be warm...when I powered it on without the fan, it got pretty hot within a few seconds.
It makes me curious how everyone else's xboxs are working without huge gusts of winds inside them?
