the parts needed:
8 #10 nylon washers
16 5mm zinc washers
8 5mm x 10mm pan phillips head screws (the heads are rounded and not flat like lawdawg's screws so no need for the nylon washers on the bottom side)
8 original black screws
artic silver 5 thermal paste
the screws i used are available at home depot. as far as any other place i do not know. the black screws can be screwed snuggly into the phillips head. this allows you to keep the board attached to the casing without any drilling, cutting or dremeling. remember to only tighten the 5mm x 10mm screws only as tight as a loose hand will tighten it.

Question.
Are the zinc washers necessary or can i use metal ones?

steel ones worked for me just the same. also when tightening the black screws when turning them with one hand push down on the top of the screw driver pushing the screwdriver farther into the black screw wich will keep from stripping out the black screw

Awesome cause i ordered the parts for lawdog's fix and did not see that his screws were not pan phillips and those were the ones i got. So basically the only difference with his method is that you only use 1 washer on each side (instead of 2) and use pan phillips screws or am i missing something?
Edit: Just noticed that you still use 2 zync washers on the bottom.
-
yup so if you got/get 5mm x 10mm phillips screws and you should be ok make sure the top of the head is rounded and not flat.. and i use 8 zinc washers on the bottom.. 1 for every screw

So one nylon on top, one zync (or metal) on bottom and what are the original black screws for?

one nylon and one metal on top.. and one metal on the bottom.. the black screws that are on the x-clamps originally get screwed into the phillips head of the big screws it keeps the whole thing clamped to the metal casing so the motherboard wont flex as much

Oh yeah i hadn't seen that metal washer on top doh

Also, this might be a really stupid question but how do i get the original things off the heatsink so that only the holes remain? Do i just pry them out by force?

there is tutorials on removing the x-clamps then you can use a pair of pliers to unscrew the screws that the x-clamps clip onto off of the heatsinks

Oh they're just screws? Ok, thanks. I don't need help with the actual removal of the clamps as i've done it before to clean the old thermal compound and apply new one. Think i got everything i need, i just hope the parts arrive this week so i can do this on the weekend. Something to note: i do not have a 3RLOD problem. What i *had* (and i say had because it has not happened again after i put a third fan in the box and put 1 penny under each ram chip) was that the video would show a bunch of garbage and then the screen would go black. The machine did not crash though.
By the way, do you recommend i remove the single penny from each ram chip when i do this fix? I guess that would be ideal since i want the mobo to flex the least. Thanks for all your help man, i appreciate it.

completely remove the pennies. and your peoblem is still with the gpu and this mod fixes it.. also heatgunning the gpu and cpu can help fix it better

Well i don't have a heatgun so that's out of the question. What i'll do is follow that part of lawdog's tutorial and just let it overheat by itself for a minute or two. I'll tell you how it all goes *crosses fingers* XD

ok this seems worth a try. One question though: how do you screw the original black xclamp screws into the new philips head screws? Am i missing something here? Are these phillips screws special ones or something, that are like threaded in the phillips head?

they arent special screws.. the black screws will thread themselves into the phillips head

interesting, I will give it a go. thanks
I checked out your xbox btw, it looks amazing, very impressed.

unfortunantly i dont have a 16 trillion megapixel (exagerration) camera that can take high resolution pics of motherboards and stuff so i cant show pics that you could even make out

Sounds like a good idea, just not sure this will work well. Are you forcing the original black screws to 'thread' into the top of the philips head screws? Is that holding well?

actually it doesnt damage the little black screws it threads nicely into the phillips head and believe me you cant get a screw to hold any tighter.. it actually takes a little muscle to get the final turns of the black screws
-
after u did this did u let it overheat?

So I guess the difference in your method is that you use rounded screws instead of flat ones, and also correct me if I am wrong..Does lawdawg not use the original black screws? What I cant figure out is with lawdawgs method, if you just put the screws through the motherboard and do not screw where the x clamps where to the casing? So with his method, what keeps the motherboard close to the casing near where the old x clamps where?
At least in your example I can see we are using the original black screws and this is how the motherboard stays close to the casing..But Im still not sure how the black screws will not mess up the screws going through the motherboard.
Any help would be appreciated...

the black screws dont screw up the other scrws cause the are tiny.. they just make a small threading into the big screws... and to the guy above i will do the heatgun on most of my fixes for good measure.. but i dont do the overheating method like that.. should work without it
edit:lawdawgs method does not use the black screws so it doesnt have anything supporting the screws to the chassis
