I have seen many people post about placing something on top of there gpu heat sink so that air is forced over the whole thing, but when I was looking at my 360 and doing measurements the dvd seemed pretty flush on top of the gpu for the most part. So I think that the cardboard fix is some what pointless. Can anyone verify if I am somewhat right or if I have no idea what I am talking about.

Little bit of both actually. The drive does sit on top of the heatsink, but it doesn't make contact, so there's still somewhat of a gap there, not to mention it can get air in from the sides as well. The air will take the path of least resistance, so the drive covering the heatsink vs. anything that actually sits right on top of it to the very end will have different results. Covering it forces the air to be drawn all the way thru the sink, the drive just has too many places air can get by it. Doing just the heasink part of the mod without also doing the divider part of it is pointless as well, you'll just end up pulling more air thru the CPU side without that bit done also.
