Dont worry about it too much about the transistors surrounding the core, as long as the core is clean then it doesnt matter.

Some 360s have this white paste that is incredibly easy to clean off, however some have the dark grey paste, that is a nightmare to clean off well.

I use isopropyl alcohol, and a credit card to scrape off the thermal paste (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Carburettor cleaner - it will melt the grey stuff like it's hot butter.  Then use some contact cleaner (iso alcohol) to clean it to a polish ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I used Q-tips with goo gone, Wd-40 and a final cleaning with IPA to clean mine up.  I cleaned the whole chip, including the SMCs.  I know it's not necessary, but neither was lapping my heatsinks.   Here is what mine looked like after cleaning....and I had that nasty gray paste.  Goo gone and WD-40 worked really well to get it off though, but it did leave behind a film, so I cleaned it really good with IPA too.
