Some Xbox360 Elite Consoles have BenQ DVD-DrivePosted by XanTium | May 1 11:38 EST | News Category: Xbox360 |

While we've already seen reports of Hitachi-LG (v78 or v79) DVD-drives found in Xbox360 Elite consoles, apparently Microsoft is also using the new BenQ VAD6038 ODD on some of their Elite production lines. Earagon22 posted a picture of his Xbox360 Elite console with BenQ drive on the xbox.com forums.

Hmmm nice, this drive needs to start appearing more so the firmware hackers can hack it
.
-
Time for a new firmware hack. I am sure ms will finish the surplus of samsung and hitachi before going to benq that is why there is a mix of them
-
Awesome. I'd much rather have a quiet drive than a firmware hack (for me at least)

agreed, that's time that could be better spent cracking the actual system and getting some actual actual homebrew
-
Not me, I like games too much for that

Except that from all accounts and reviews of the Elite 360(from Engadget for example), the system is still as loud as it was previously. There may be a very slight difference in sound during disc reading but its not that big..

I think this will not happen until the dvd firmware mod gets "blocked" by m$... unfortunetly the masses only like to pirate instead of buying games

That picture of the elite sure doesn't look like it is very black in color. It looks more grayish...

I was thinking the same thing. At first I thought maybe it was just a bad picture, but all the other black stuff looks much more black. I guess it could look more gray with a combination of the texture of the finish/the flash, but it seems unlikely.

Yeah but before that report there was a drive comparison where the BenQ was found to be the quitest drive of all. The review you are thinking of is just the premium and elite in general.
-
There is no way that is an elite.
-
Its not surprising to see the Ben-Q Disc Drive on the Elite, considering Microsoft people informed Xbox-Scene about how the same disc drives used on the current Xbox 360 units would be implemented.
This is a growing dilemma and is just going to become much worse.
I sincerely hope that more people will engage in working on the Ben-Q drive and finding a way to flash it.
Considering the fact that the 360 has a short life-span and is just a matter of time before I need another to hack.
-
Does anyone else have a BenQ in there elite? Time to speak up.

I am going to purchase an elite 360 within the next 2 weeks i will post back then. I was hopeing that it was BLACK BLACK not greyish in color all the pictures I've noticed it beening a bit on the greyer side. Oh well I want it (HDMI) anyhows..

Well, when i was listening to major last night, he said that the original xbox 360 was a "chill" color. He went on to clearly state that the elite is not charcoal, not midnight, but black. plain old B-L-A-C-K. This person must've painted theirs.

If you read the thread referenced in the original post, you'll see that several other elite owners are saying they have a Benq drive as well.
sorry but the elite is not that black you should check other pircutres and when there is a fair amount of light (as when you take screenshot with flash) you can see it´s a dark grey instead.
-
That picture is an elite. Mine looks exactly like it.
It would appear to be my Elite also has a BenQ drive as well.
What would be the exact appearance of the drive so I can double check?
-
I just bought an Elite on Sunday. It looks just like that. The elite is black but the texture makes it a greyish color.
How can you tell if you have a BenQ drive?

I have a BenQ drive in my elite. I also have a VIA 6124 SATA chipset. If anyone has any ideas on how to dump the firmware using the SATA chipset please email me and I will do it!! [email protected]

My drive looks exactly like that of the picture. Bought in Utah (wherever that zone is).
While the Elite is black, it's not as black as the controller.
-
where in utah did you get your elite?

Well let's not forget that without the FW hack the hypervisor exploit would not have been found (the shaders could be edited in the Kiosk disc, but the hypervisor bug didn't exist until after they blacklisted the Kiosk disc). It does appear though that most of the big boys are working on hacking the kernel and fully hacking the hypervisor, so maybe we'll see something in the near future.

After hacking the firmware for my 360 drive i find its quieter now, so i'm much happier whilst playing games.

Samsung and Hitachi have been the main suppliers for a long time. For all we know, they could have a contract with Microsoft that lasts 5 years. The BenQ were probably brought in to help out temporarily with supply. No reason to believe that they will ever replace the main suppliers. It's more likely that BenQ will eventually just disappear from 360's and never be seen again, or just be a third supplier.

got an xbox360 non elite last night and its got the benQ in it
