Title: 360 Noob. Need Advice On Hardware Issue

Problem: Disk Read Error. I know one million people have gotten it and i did a little searching but couldn't come up with a concrete solution.

I'd like to think its the drive but i don't want to make any assumptions and make myself look stupid so where do i start?

Goes online just fine but can't play any games. Not a disc error.

Laser sounds like it's dying, is the drive flashed? How old is the Xbox?

As far as i know the drive is not flashed. I initially bought the console back in Dec of 05 but had hardware issues (thee red lights) and sent her in for work in April of 06. They covered it all and sent me a new/refurbished console.

Is the laser a direct replacement or does it also need to be flashed like the DVD Drive?
