Title: Problem With 360
Post by: chynk on April 22, 2007, 04:46:00 AM
hey guys,

today when i turned my 360 on and played it for about 10 mins, the video froze, some random pixels popped onto my tv and the 360 beeped. i have the led fader so im not sure if theres an error code or not.

my first guess is that my 360 is overheating. i checked the fans and it seems like they are in working order... might not be moving as much air but its hard to tell.

i can still turn on my 360 and it'll run fine for about 5 mins. then after that, it'll stay on for a shorter and shorter amount of time (hence the overheating assumption).

should i just replace my fans? they are 2x led fans so it wont be difficult.

any advice would be appreciated.

Read around here about the 3RLOD and X-clamp replacement. Your 360 is on it's way out and doing any type of cooling mods on it now are just gonna add fuel to the fire. I'm suprised it hasn't tossed a 3 Red Light error code yet, it's usually not far behind the grafix going all funky.

Well i dont know what error code my 360 is giving me because i installed the fader and replaced the smd's.

But thanks for pointing me in the right direction though. Also, what initiates something like this?

BTW, now I have no video at all. I tried both TV and HDTV modes with my composite cables and I'm still getting "no signal" from my TV.

@ Mrcon - Post removed, use the BST or PM for that kinda thing.

It may not be throwing an error code at all, if it's just freezing at random times it doesn't. So you've had it apart, did you tighten the heatsink screws when putting it all back together? or Upgrade the Termal Compuond while it was apart?

If everything is all back together correctly, try one of the non-invasive and easier "fixes" and see if you get a result, the Squeeze Trick or Towel Trick. If it's a crap solder joing after doing the Towel Trick it should fire up and run for awhile, how long is anyones guess though.

Got it working via the towel trick. Now that I have it open, I'm going to upgrade the thermal paste, add some heat sinks on my RAM and southbridge and improve the heat transfer of the existing heat sinks by restricting the outflow.

Thanks for the advise!

Doing the X-clamp replacement would be the better "fix" now. It's hard to tell how much longer it'll last, but that should get ya the most life from it if done properly.

If you've got it open already , you might as well replace the x clamps. I'd do a fan mod as well , at least it'll keep the temp fluctuations smaller.

what do you mean by 'restricting the outflow' ? air?

I don't see how restricting airflow will help( if that's what you mean) , it'll do more harm than good.

Restricting the path air travels through the case and out of the box. The stock fan shroud isn't very efficient in terms of drawing heat away from the heat sinks. By improving this (allowing the fans to draw more heat away from the heat sinks by increasing the "effective" surface area), the overall temperature of the box should remain lower.

When you say "fan mod", what are you referring to? The GPU/CPU fans? Or attaching a fan to the heat sink?

Also, I am looking to buy some new heat sinks for my RAM chips and southbridge. Do you happen to know the exact dimensions? I believe the RAM is 11mm x 15mm (with a maximum height of 15mm) and the southbridge is 30mm x 30mm (maximum height?). Can someone please confirm this?

you mean de-restricting ... By restricting it, you would make the xbox hotter .. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Replace the X-clamp and prevent or at least try to limit the board from warping. Do a fan mod. and add addtional fan to cool the overall temperature inside your box. Hopefully it will prolong the inevitable....

If will come if you don't do anything. First it will hang less often. Then it becomes more often and then one day 3RLOD ...

A better word might be re-directing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Thanks guys, I'll look into it.

The Southbridge is 23mm x 23mm and the max heatsink height for it would be 15mm as well.
