Title: Thinking About X Clamp Replacement
Post by: jimbobjim on April 15, 2007, 04:08:00 AM
Hi all, I bought a three red lights 360 on the cheap last week and managed to get it working with the heatgun trick. I've also applied some arctic silver 5, added a southbridge heatsink, cut the shielding for better air flow and added an intake fan (see pic). It's been working fine now for four days and runs nice and cool. I just want to know if the heatgun trick is always temporary or are there some people who have experienced the trick to be more of a permanent fix? Basically I don't want to do the x clamp replacement if i don't 100% need to. Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

The x-clamp replacement certainly doesn't make any situations worse, so if your looking to prolong the life of the 360 i'd suggest it, but you don't need to do it. But i've only heard good reviews of doing it.

you can view the success thread here

it seems a good fix.

out of the 40 or so xbox's done, only 5 or so it hasnt worked for.

however, based on the fact one member has done around 10 of them with this method each of them successfull i can only assume the unsuccessful ones were either, incorrect replacement or permanent, unrepairable damage has already been done.

Thanks gents, I think i'll just see how i go for now. After all, if it aint broke, don't fix it.  But if it dies again I wont hesitate to replace the clamps.
