With the recent discovery of replacing the X-clamps on the motherboard being a good fix for 3RLOD, RBJtech suggested that we keep track of results. Thanks go to him for all of his help, ideas, and suggestions.
Topics of note:If you live near a Home Depot, Iriez has posted the UPCs of the materials you'll need:QUOTE(Iriez @ Aug 29 2007, 06:02 PM)

Here are the offical home depot part numbers:
Qty - 8 Machine Screw Pan - Phillips 5 x 10mm (DR# - 313) UPC - 030699 801282
Qty - 16 Flat Washer Nylon #10 (DR# - 610) UPC - 030699 869381
Qty - 16 Flat Washer Steel / ZINC Plated 5mm (DR# - 606) UPC - 030699 363087
I have successfully repaired 4 3RLOD's with these parts. Do NOT use the 'hex' head screws as a alternative, they are too large and cause your motherboard to bend when you screw it all back togeather.
Note: The 'DR#' is the 'drawer number' and may not be the same at every home depot. I've visited 3 now with the same drawer numbers, but the upc and description is the best way to find it.
Please read the following carefully:
Do not add results from the jewel-case method, we don't want them!
If, and only if, you have done one of the above methods, then reply in this thread. Please post one of the following options, nothing more, nothing less. For discussion of the tutorial, methods, etc., please use the above links to the appropriate tutorial thread.- Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
- Fixed the 3RLOD. Video still freezes occasionally.
- Mixed results. Sometimes works with no 3RLOD.
- Did not fix the 3RLOD.
If you could please post what secondary error code your console exhibits too, that'd be great.
(I will update and merge posts into here as needed, other moderators feel free to help out.)
Current results:- Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine: 925 consoles.
- Fixed the 3RLOD. Video still freezes occasionally: 23 consoles.
- Mixed results. Sometimes works with no 3RLOD: 8 consoles.
- Did not fix the 3RLOD: 86 consoles.

guys please do not post anything other than your result.
example.
"1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine"
thanks.

Hi, I wonder should we update the result with duration? I mean add more statistic like it been working for 7 days , 30 days, 1 month, 2 months ? And also, Statistic saying it stops working after 7 days, 30 days etc etc.
I think this will be a great research on how the x-clamp works.
I heard a lot of people says the method only works for days to month only.
I think the result we are getting now is for those who have their 360 fixed at day 1.
That way, we can know the x-clamp works and might able to improve it.
Sorry, if I am not suppose to give suggestion(you can delete it).
Thanks

i beleive lawdawgs and rbjtech boxes are still in good working order, which would indicate good results.

Hello Peoples,I'm just wondering will this fix also work for the strange oilpaint looking graphics as well, reason I'm asking is I dont have the rrod but my video goes after a few min. and after i shut down then start up I have no pic. but if I get the sucker HOT! then let it cool down my video comes back again.
-
I repaired another one. Used RBJTech's method, the error code was the usual 0102.
"1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine"

1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
I was getting the two & three flashing lights problem, but two sets of washers under the GPU heatsink resolved that isssue. Nice blob of thermal paste too.
Going to do the CPU heatsink next. Used Lawdawg's method.

#1 Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine
Thank you so much. I bought my XBOX 360 off of eBay refurbished and eventually got the red ring of death. So I tried sending it to Microsoft, but got it back two weeks later un-repaired. So I went searching the internet for the cheapest places to get it fix until I came upon this method. I didn't want to spend $100+ so I followed the directions perfectly, and walah, I have a working XBOX 360 again. Thank you soooooooooo much for the tutorial.

Fixed the 3RLOD via lawdawgs method. working so far.

2 Red Light 360s, neither one works

I just did the X Clamp fix and now i have three green lights, then i am getting the two red lights. How is it still overheating??? How long does it take to cool down?? Its been almost an hour after. I am very excited to see three green lights, but hmm....i have the fans up and all. Should i enclose it? Wouldnt the heat be worse for testing im confused. haha. HELP....
Ill just keep pouring water on it....maybe ice....oh well.

Got lawdawgs method to work. Though it has a tendency to overheat after a few minutes. I didn't use arctic silver 5 so I'm probably going to redo it with it.
-
Fixed a 0102
With the MKIII fix, used 3 washers between board & CPU/GPU.
-
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Error 0020 Successfully fixed with LAWDAWG0931 method. Instead of waiting 2 minutes had to wait 6 minutes and never turned from 3 red to 2 red. Let it cool off and success.

1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Bought the system 3-4 months after release, only just 3ROD'd when I got Mass Effect (no relation I am sure, but still an odd trend).
Not sure what the secondary code was before as I forgot to check.
10+ hours over 3 days so far.
I used the Lawdawg method w/ some older AS (3 or 4 or something).
I must have read the guide wrong. I used the Lowes parts and put the screws in directly onto the motherboard, not onto the metal bottom plate (the graphic didn't make it clear that you need to go through the plate). The board fit back into the case and was only slightly misaligned in the front (which easily pulled back into place with the screws).
Do I need to worry about the board warping again because of the way I re-assembled it? Will the screw heads act as standoffs as in the MKI and possible help the situation rather than hurt?

hey,
i just tried the xclamp mod- and it worked a treat. I ended up only using 1 washer on the gpu, which was the only way to stop the rings. Also- the first time i booted it up- it froze and gave me two rings (overheating), and has worked fine since.
cheers!

Hi
I just bought a broken Xbox 360 - it was coming up with the 3RLOD(code 0102) and the warranty had already been voided.
I originally tried the towel trick, but that didnt work.
I followed the xclamp replacement tutorial and it's now working (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) the three lights came back on after i was finished, so i left it running for 5 minutes then restarted it - now its fine.

I fixed my two Xbox 360's this past weekend with this method...thanks to the guys that put the replacement online...I'll be fixing my brother's 360 this coming weekend...he's got the same issues as well...unfortunately we both bought two 360's before this fix came out...now we'll each have two 360's in the house...what a waste of money..........but I love the console.....
-
(1) Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
worked on first boot, froze once, never again.
(1) DID NOT fix the 3RLOD. Won't boot, no matter what.
just wont boot, no matter what. Error 0103.
-
Fixed the 3RLOD two weeks ago. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Used modified Lawdawg0931's method since I'm in Canada and I couldn't find everything needed. I skipped the fiber washers and used spacer washers instead of flat ones. The mounting holes are already isolated and it should do the trick perfectly if you can't find fiber or nylon washers...
THANKS SO MUCH FOR REVIVING MY 360 !!!!

Unfortunately it seems there are some consoles that are simply beyond repair . . . . .
I have an original launch machine. It recently started giving me the 3rlod with error code 0102 so I decided to try out Lawdawg0931's method . . . . I'm an experienced rework technician with high level soldering skill (I can easily do a board full of 0603 pitch components and TSSOP ICs by hand with a fine tipped iron), and didn't feel like waiting a few weeks for a warranty repair. The MS sticker was intact at this point and I could have gotten a free repair, but I decided to deal with the issue myself. Given the overwhelming success of the xclamp replacement method I figured it was no big deal doing it myself . . . .
But I was wrong. I replaced the xclamps with Lowes hardware and AS 5 and did the overheating step . . . to no avail. Then I tried using just one washer instead of two and only managed to change the error code from 0102 to 0020 and 0023. (This would seem to cement the belief that 0020 and 0023 are GPU solder joint related issues) Adding back in the washers changed it right back to 0102. I then went to the heat gun method . . . . . again, to no avail. At this point I inspected the GPU with a magnifying glass and realized that the ENTIRE PACKAGE was warped! One side was completely lifted from the motherboard, with broken solder joints clearly visible. There's simply no remedy I can think of for such a badly damaged BGA component. No matter how much heat is applied it won't matter if half the chip isn't making contact with the motherboard!
I guess in some cases there's just nothing you can do short of buying a new GPU, solder stencil, and solder paste and then reflowing the whole thing. And that's just crazy.
-
Did this mod now on 5 xbox360 and have worked with no problems except for 1 which I had to retighten the screws. I did however change it a little bit by using rubber O-RING (5/32 x 9/32 buna-n) washers in place of the nylon washers O-RINGS HERE. They will hold the screws in place so there is no need to tape them on the back and it helps with adjusting the height.

Fixed 3ROD - don't know which error code was.

| M5 Bolt goes here....
Internal metal case not modified/drilled (not needed)
At first, I just hand-tighten the bolts (with no fans) and used the heatup phase to re-solder GPU/CPU to board (I did noticed some bending on the mobo) waited about 4-5min with no change to 2RoD (overheating). Without letting it cool down I tighten (attention: cross tighten bolts) with a small driver until it's real tight - after that no more 3RoD! Still without fans on, I let it overheat and waited 30sec to 'cook' the solder then unplug the power suply. Let it cooldown for about 5-10min reinstalled everything and as far I can tell all is running smoothly - as this console wasn't mine (it was of a friend of mine: when he got 3RoD without warranty - misplaced it, I guess - he went running buying an Elite) so I don't have any games (or even controller) so I can give it a little HEAT.
The xbox360 internals were in a very dirty mess (beware!)!!! Lots of dust, cotton and such (the console is just about one year old) - it took me some (lot) of time to get rid of that mess (I rub most everything with an old tooth brush to free the dirt). I could notice the heat marks (GPU heatsink) on the lower bottom of the DVD Drive and at the top internal metal case (CPU heatsink) also, the copper of the CPU heatsink was heat-colored (!) and the thermal grease of the GPU was all over the top of the GPU and it was a pain in the ... to take (most of) it out!!
I'll be doing some additional mods to improve air flow and thus lower temperature: at first the metal mesh at fan output will be trimmed off then I'll try to figure out if there's any need for adding an extra fan to take fresh air inside.
Once more, thanks...
[Edit]:
I'm a bit worried about the little bending that this solution causes on the motherboard (it does exactly the opposite of the x-clamps), probably I should had been more conservative and use 3 washers instead of only 2.
Does any one revert these steps without problems? I ask this because off bending and possible de-solder due to actual tension (bend) on GPU/Mobo...

1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
thanks so much I thought it was game over with code 0102. but used MKIII exactly and yeah baby! 15 minutes hard play because Ive got serious paranoya that this fix is gunna run out or sum shit.
thanx again
-
well, after reading further threads here I took some actions and lose a lot of tension over my 3RoD FIX. there many ppl reporting that the problem (3RoD) come back after some time (6 months or so) after these fixes and become somewhat permanent (irreversible) to us mere mortals...
I lose much of the tension on the mobo (loose the bolts) as carefull as possible to prevent these 'appenings'.
Think about this: We're complaining about bad desing on the x-clamps but the the FIX does exaclite the same think in the interface mobo/GPU anda mobo/CPU but in the oppopsite direction. Therefore I´m not suprised the problem coming back in these conditions...

Given a xbox last week. Been messing with it since.
Errors 0102 for the most part until i started baking it with no xclamp replacement.
Errors jumped from 0103 and 0110 and back to 0102.
It would work after some bakes, but overheats much too fast.
Added a fan to gpu heatsink.
http://www.pxn.ca/images/xbox/xclamp_fanmod_fixedfornow.jpg
Canadian Tire didn't have what we needed, pretty small selection. Didn't try home depot.
Rona was next door to Canadian tire.
Nylon Washers
Servalite 229-M Nylon Flat Washer No.10 - UPC 039008000071 (5 per pack, square white packet.)
Metal Washers
Servalite 284-B Metric Washer 5mm Flat - UPC 039008000019 (singles)
Bolts
Servalite 247-K Metric Phil Machine Screw M5 X 10mm Pan Head - UPC 039008000071 (gen hardware upc I guess?)
I've only done the gpu xclamp so far as one bolt i picked up was a size too big.
Finger tightened the new bolts, with washers, plugged in and let it bake, tightened 1/4 turns on each bolt, twice while cooling. (only waited a minute or so after unplugging)
Let it cool, and booted right up and appears to be stable, we'll see.
After the gpu fan, the cpu heatsink is cool to the touch during assassins creed.
How durable are the nylon washers to heat, are they a timebomb?
I tried the 12v mod on the fans to try and create more flow but it's too loud, hopefully this will be sufficient.
Thanks for the tuts, while not a complete fix for all, is seems to fix the base issue.
Remember if this works for you, get the gpu cooled as best as you can to try to prevent it from getting hot enough to do damage again.
Appears to have fixed the problem. Only a matter of hours and a number of heatups and cooldowns to see what the true outcome may be. No freezes or artifacts or slowdowns to speak of so far.

1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine
Used MkIII method.
On first boot I had the 3RLOD. I unplugged the console and loosened all 8 screws and plugged it back in. The plan was to push down on each screw as suggested and I was lucky that the first screw I pushed worked. I now have 4 green lights and everything seems good, I tightened the screws by holding the screwdriver with my fingers (rather than the normal palm grip) and twisted the screws tight without forcing too much.
I've only tested it for 2 hours on GRAW but am going to put it through its paces with Mass Effect, will let you all know if something goes wrong.
Btw I'm from Australia and I found all my parts at Bunnings with the exception of the thermal paste which I bought from Jaycar.
Parts used:
Flat washer (5mm) pack of 50 around $3
Metric Screw (5mm x 15mm) pack of 12 around $4
I used 3 washers under the m/board, 1 for the CPU and 2 for GPU. The process was pretty easy, it helps if you're handy with this type of thing otherwise it will be difficult.
THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT FIX!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
-
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine. =D
-
I used 16mm bolts for all 8 locations. I added a flat washer on the bottom side, under the head, for the 4 CPU bolts. On the inside of the case I used one flat washer and a drilled out 5mm nut. On top of the board I used 3 nylon washers per position. This worked great and I have not had any problems. My error code was 0102.
-
worked for 2 weeks after using lawdawgs method, but went back to rrod today. Im just glad it happened now versus later, as I had it for sale and A guy was suposed to pic it up tonight.

Another success using RBJtech's MKIII method (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hello!
Results on an $80 console that I had bought off ebay and repaired using the MkIII method:
2. Freeze
2 blinking lights immediately after (both on the left side) procedure
1 freeze (might have actually been the game Assassin's Creed that caused this)
Console has been running for over two weeks with up to 2-3 hours of daily gameplay/dvd viewing with no real issues yet, other than loud fans while ingame.
Honestly, so far it appears to be a great fix. I'll report again in a couple of weeks with any progress / deterioration.

Just wanted to say you guys are the SHIT!!!!!! fixed and everything is working i did a mixbetween both methods... AWESOME!!!!!
Thanks

To give hope to all ROD owners. This is my story...
Got a new XBox360 with a mobile phone subscription. Contents: Samsung MS-28. Bought Centronics SATA PCI card. Flashed my drive to Xtreme 4.2. Played not so often (30 yrs. and a busy job) and not too long per session. Some day, after not using the 360 for games (sometimes as DVD player), I got the ROD. F*CK!
Googled somewhat, saw the video's about x-clamp and decided to fix it myself. I did not feel ok with the towell trick. So, opened up the case. Bought some torx screwdrivers and some bolts and plastic washers. Removed the x-clamp and heatsinks. New paste on the chips. Tightened the nuts with washers without x-clamp (the motherboard was a bit under pressure, firm but not too firm...). Booted the xbox for the first time again (without fans). Still the ROD. F*CK again...!
Baked the 360 for about 3 minutes (without any fans). Whow... this thing is like an oven. In two minutes you cannot touch the heatsinks anymore. Let it cool off for about 10 minutes.
Then I put everything together. The nuts were too high so all the connectors were about 1,5 mm too high. But all connectors are fixed to the casing so this was no problem (more tension.... great! :-) Before closing all of the case; check it. And.... it worked flawless!! Superb. Werkt als een tiet.
Flashed DVD to 1.3, put all of it together and we're back in business... Hope this will make you feel better....
BTW: parts: out of my head: I used M5 x 10mm bolts for both heatsinks with a M5 spring washer on the mainboard bottom side. On the top side I used one M5 plastic ring (about 1mm high). Do not tighten the spring washer fully but tighten is quite hard (the spring washer was not fully, so medium, pressed!). Used it for both processors with new thermal paste. Costed me about 2 euro's. The torx, size 8 or something, was 6 euro. Good luck!

How long does this last for? I've tried alot of ways to fix it but the 3 redlights always come back.
-
I played a couple of days now with sessions up to 5 hours. Not a single sign of breaking. I should mention that the box now is vertical and stands free. So lots of cold air available. Before it operated in a closet (dressoir) with the back plate removed. This was too hot for the 360 but was a lot quiter.
Did you try 'baking it'? In the beginning my 360 also still had the 3 ROD lights and would not boot. Make sure the paste is spread evenly (I used some crappy old shit) and tightened good enough. After baking, let it cool off and tighten the bolts again. Not too firm, but enough...
Good luck!
-
So I'm in the process of the replacement and had a question...
I read about solder points becoming "unsoldered" after time? What is it referring to? The GPU just SITS on the CPU right? Nothing is SOLDERED so to speak.
This is the reasoning from the guys over at x-clamp-fix.com which doesnt really make sense?
"The basic reason we found out is that the metal housing of the 360 is not straight bended by production. The bended area is exactly there where the GPU sits. That means if you screw in the Mainboard it will exactly bended like the metal case. This mechanical tension to the mainboard will break the soldered grid ball connection ealier or later. The original X-clamp does not produce enough pressure to the heat sink to keep the mainboard straight connected to the GPU. The original X-clamp is made of ordinary steel what really doesn`t help in this case. It lost pressure in a few months. The only steel that delivers enough pressure power is spring steel"
What Im asking is HOW this fix works and why?
-
Error ecode 0102 now sorted thanks ( well so far)
-
Just did the X-Clamp fix today. Works 100% took only 3 hours and the 360 has run for 9 hours straight with no problems.

Had error 0102, fixed with RBJtech's X-clamp MkIII method.

Using Lawdawg's How-To fix of the 3RLOD, fixed the issue. No freezing and no issues.
I do want to note that I originally I did get the screws snug in the bottom and overheated the 360 w/o the fans for 2 minutes as stated in the guide. When it didn't work (3RLOD was still popping up), I waited for cool down, then tightened the nuts more but not intense power. Did the overheating trick for 3 minutes this time, and that did the trick.
Thank you very much!!
-
This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
(x-clamp replacement, lawdawg's method, works perfectly now.
)
-
I was getting the locking up of games and then the 3R's.
I just did the fix and it works AWESOME!
-
No RLOD here, but I was getting weird green and yellow colors and then no video, but had audio so I knew it was the GPU. Performed the x-clamp replacement and it has been running flawlessly for 2 weeks no with no issues at all.
Do not be afraid to torque the bolts. I torqued mine on the verge of stripping the heat sinks with a 1/4 ratchet.
-
Hi bit off topic i know but i had an issue with my xbox not showing video but had sound i jus replaced the heat sink compound with arctic silver placed 2 nylon washers under the heads of the 8 black heatsink screws turned it on it ran gears of war for approx 30 seconds then artifact issues came back so i turned it off for a few mins turned it back on and has been fine fingers crossed for the last 6-8 weeks about 20-30 hours a week upto 8-9 hours in a row over night
-
lawdawgs method worked for me, no freezing or anything, cant beleive this actually worked, thanks very much
-
Just thought I'd give an update on my console...
Just passed the 2 week mark and there seems to be no problem even after a 24hr session playing Mass Effect. I applied the RJB method of cooling by isolating each fan and was a little worried that it might catch on fire
but after that session my mind is at ease.
Once again THANK YOU!
-
I fixed mine back in May with Lawdawg's method. I have to keep adjusting it though. One of my mistakes was buying rubber washers (don't do this) because they change size. When I first did the mod it lasted months. Since then I have to fix it every week or so. Be careful not to tighten too much because over time it will flex more and more until it freezes again. I'm going to try RBJtech's method now to see if it works better. I wish Microsoft didn't create such a defective console because it's fun to play.
-
You can now add me to the list:
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
I was getting error code 0102, used lawdawgs method.
I will be replacing my stock fans and adding a front fan on the case in about a week. Shouldn't have any more overheating issues after that.
Thanks guys.
-
I need to be removed as a success. I did the fix in early March and it worked fine until about 2 weeks ago. Now it has the same problem as before, only now it works for about 2 minutes before it freezes. I tried opening the system and making it overheat once again and tightening the screws, and that's how I got to where I am now (instead of just 3 lights instantly when you turn it on). It would appear that this fix is only a temporary one. Still... I think I got my money's worth, and now I have a brand new Elite.
-
nope didnt work for me, i dont know if i done anything wrong but now i cant get the thing to over heat, the power brick turns green then back to orange. i cant even get the thing to turn on by pressing open on the dvd drive. and i even tried plugging the fans back in but they spin for a second then switch off. the 3rol are still on the console but it just wont over heat. any suggestions would be appreciated thanx in advance.

Lycan its most likely a short somewhere. You know those little legs sticking up on the outsides of the mother board? Check and make sure all of those are touching on the inside of the case and none are outside.
-
i was trying to heat it up without putting it into the metal tray. but i think yes when i did try it in the case there was a leg sticking out of the wireless adaptor port. but when u say legs do u mean the bits holding in the different parts like on the all the big parts that originally held it in place. and if it was one of them, have i caused any majar damage by this or by trying to heat it up when not in the metal holder. i cant try it yet because i was fixing it over my mates as he has all the write equipment but he is in work al day now. i have also read on another thread that it coud be a broken trace. but they seem easy enough to fix with some practice. any more advice would still be appreciated.

success (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif)
my console started to freeze after 6 months of purchase untill it died completely with error code 0102, I really dont know what to call my method (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) cuz i was supposed to apply MKIII method but i couldn't find appropriate parts so i just bolted the heatsinks to the mobo instead of metal case (don't know the consequences but i had no choice) , added front fan and did the shroud modification...
I played COD4 for half an hour without problems (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (before i was able to play for 2 minutes and then 3RLOD)

I used the Lawdawg0931's Tutorial & it didn't work at first. When I firdt turned to console on it went to the 2 blinking read lights. I re-read this tutorial and loosen the nuts on top of the heatsink and it worked perfectly.
I also didn't drill the case either. I put 3 washers under the board because the bolt had as a slight curve in it. I put 2 washers directly on the top of the board then sat the heatsink on top then I put the nylon nuts on top. When I installed it back into the case I only put in the screws to hold the top and the dvd player in place. This was done to keep from bending the board.
So success thus far and it's now been 30+ days
Thanks to ALL involved in this post.

Had RROD, Secondary code was a GPU related. Unfortunately had opened the console already... so no warranty repair. This saved my xbox. Running for a week now, no issues at all. Huge thanks to everyone involved in putting this information together.
-
had intially 2 rings of death
then 1 ring of death
then 3 rings of death
then back to 2 ring of death
now......
a complete x-clamp replacement did not work. So I replaced only one x-clamp and left the other one on. Now it works fine. Havn't had any problems since.

RBJ mkIII works flawlessly
-
Used Lawdawg0931's guide and it worked the first time around. No problems with 360 now... some misc notes. The owner before me tried the towel trick before giving up and selling it to me for $40. Spent the $4.88 for the screws and washers at Home Depot and fixed it the next day. While burning in, I never got the two orange lights that indicate the 360 is overheating. I decided to wait 5 minutes to turn it off rather than the 2 suggested minutes (was hot to the touch and smelled a bit like something was burning). I allowed one hour for it to cool down with a fan blowing on it. Worked the first time; however, I forgot the power to the fans when I tested it. That is when I got the two orange lights telling me the 360 was overheating (doh!). So, I decided to let it cool off again for 30 minutes before I reassembled it all back together. I let it sit for 24 hours before giving it a proper test. I wanted to make sure I allowed time for everything to settle. It's been a few months now and not one problem. CHEERS!
-
Had the RLOD replaced the clamps and for a 1+weeks all has been great, will report back if it stops working. Thank You So Much, didn't want to have to buy a new one.
-
I had limited success using lawdawgs method. The xbox probably worked a couple months afterwards, then rrod again. Just loosening, overheating, and retightening didnt help after that. So, I took a heat gun, and an infrared thermometer and with the heatsink removed, heated up the gpu to 270ish degrees. I did it very slowly, taking care to use a circular pattern . Put the heatsink back on, did the overheating trick, but this time I blew the heatgun directly on the gpu heatsink as it was overheating, and being careful with my thermometer not to get it too hot. After that, it seems fixed again, but who knows for how long.
I think part of the problem with letting the xbox overheat itself, is that it doesnt get the gpu hot enough. It seems as though the cpu overheats first, and throws the overheat lights. So if you have a heatgun, you can help the gpu along, or if you can isolate the fan to only blow on the cpu, you could ensure that only the gpu is overheating.
Also, its a good idea to cut out the metal tray to give clearance to your bolts. If you dont, then when you bolt it all back together, it will put your xbox on a bind, which is probably not good for solder joints either. Also, the thermal pads on the memory may not touch the tray properly if they are spaced more by the bolt heads.
Good luck all

I did 3 consoles yesterday. All were showing 0020.
Box #1---result #1-worked perfectly on the first boot
Box #2---result #1-Needed to heat the board for 2 minutes with fans unplugged, boots and runs perfectly after the cool down
Box #3---result #4-Can't get this one to work for the life of me.
-
I didn't get the 3RLOD but the video was getting messed up colors. The extended warranty only covers the 3RLOD so I used RBJTech's MK3 method. I had to fiddle with the bolt tightness on the gpu, but now works flawlessly.

If you don't mind me asking. What did you do to fix the first 2 consoles? I have the same error right now. Did you do the X-Clamp replacement?

Update: Used Lawdawg on 3 Xbox 360s.
Xbox #1: After 2 months, completely dead. Always 3ROL (0102). Worked sometimes applying heat. Eventually died. Gave it to xbox360-pros, which I don't know what they did, but they couldn't fix it. Threw it away to them.
Xbox #2: After 8 months, 3ROL (0102) came back. WIP. Now switching over to RBJTech MKIII with Arctic Cooling MX-2 paste (since AS5 sucks because of longevity. MX-2 is the new king. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)) and adding two ramsinks with shroud mod.
Xbox #3: After 8 months, still going. However, I think it will end up like Xbox #2 soon because I used AS5.

Im surprised to say it works. I used the MkIII and throughly cleaned the chips with GoofOff and rubing alcohol before applying Arctic Silver 5.
I had to use the baking method though even though MkIII says not to, works great now.

Success!!!
Had error code 0020
Used mix of the methods, i used 5 x 10 mm bolts and secured the heatsinks to the motherboard not the board and caseing. This was because i did not have a drill bit handy.
First attempt it did not work so i removed the heatsinks and replaced the thermal compund. Put back together and works.
Then did the bake method for good measures.
Only played for about 5 mins but working fine so far and before wouldnt boot at all.
Thanks

SUCCESS.
I had a console with 0102 error code (3ROD), no use when i tried to boot up, completely dead.
After XCLAMP replacement everything went fine, it has been on for 6 hours up to now without a freeze, continuos load playing. Thanks a lot.
-
Just did mine using Lawdawg0931's Tutorial . Worked like a charm, just finished watching The Kingdom on it..=o)
-
Well after running for a few weeks my 360 started freezing this morning, and glitches started to appear on the screen, accompanied by a screeching noise.
Anyways I pulled the top plastic case off and loosened the bolts on the xclamp mod one at a time, on the GPU only, it then ran on COD4 for well over an hour until I switched it off, think I'm gonna add an extra case fan to suck more air out and a couple of small fans to suck more air in, fingers crossed that keeps it going this time.
-
Used a combination of both RBJtech and Lawdog's method.
Fantasic.
Been working for 5 days now, 20+ hours on actively playing, not a hitch.
Also, runs smoother than before? Bizarre?
Thank you.

Would this kit work the same? also the baking method afterwards seems to work just as well.

Had code 0021...before it came to me it would boot, then freeze on intro video, eventually not booting at all giving RROD.
Tried the MKIII method and ARS5...still wouldn't boot. Used the heat gun method and viola...works great...so far. Will report back if status has changed.

worked for a day and now i am experiencing freezing up.
thought it was just an error w assassins creed, yet i tried a couple other games and got the same thing. i loosened up the yellow/gold screws and tightened up the new xclamp replacement screws. now i'm heating up the console and will see if it works after that.
if anyone could post suggestions on what to do if yours starts to freeze up after fixing it with the xclamp replacement methond that would be great!
-
I lost count after fixing console number 57...I think ive repaired approx 75 or so now. I have only used the original method with the screws and washers to remove the xclamps-no baking or other attempts at other solutions.
All but 2 have worked perfectly after the repairs, 1 was put in the freezer by the owner after the repair due to video freezing-it NEVER worked again and he swears he was sober when he did it. The other was my personal console which had video freezing that I could not repair.
I have 3 more consoles at home with the 0102 error that will be repaired this weekend, hopefully no issues.
-
well i did a mixture of the 2 fixes, got rid of the 3RLOD but now have no video output.
any ideas?

Did not fix the 3RLOD.
Error code 0020.
Some clever dick at MS tightened a screw so much that the GPU heatsink was actually touching the motherboard. Left a nice red burn and big crack on the PCB.
Didn't stand a chance....

Gotta hand it to you guys nice work....
I went with LAWDAWG0931 guide screwed in from below the motherboard instead of outside the case with 1 washer on each screw underneath the motherboard and for me it took 2 washers instead of 3 inbetween the CPU and GPU heat sinks and bolted them down with nuts with the occasional one washer from above the heatsinks to give the nuts something to grip on when tightened. Also used Artic 5 thermal compound didnt even have to heat it up just came alive :/. Guess only time will tell how long its last for but i will keep you posted on that.
Minor issue with the dvd drive being hitachi im waiting for the guy to get back to me to say its the original drive incase its a key issue but hopefully its just a laser issue i can just replace. I play dvd films for hours and some game demos from the harddisk also some HD Hexin just cant run games from the drive atm how frustrating.
Some tips if fans run really fast your over heating with 3rlod this means the heatsinks are making hardly any contact decrease the amount of washers inbetween the heatsinks on CPU and GPU dont go any lower than 2 washers otherwise the board will bend or even worse damage the die. Also dont over tighten the nuts either as long as the heatsinks are tight on there and also make sure you have applied enough thermal paste. And dont forget to apply the thermal pads like the guide shows underneath the board on the four chips.
I shall cease to rabbit on but all credit to them guys on the guides :/

Did the X-Clamp and 3 penny guide.
XBOX 360 works great
-
1. fixed
I use the lamma version.
starts up with 3 rings. then I power off after about 30 seconds and it works fine. Sounds like I just need to adjust screws.

I got the 3rl today, error code 0020. I tried the usual stuff, but to no avail. Spend the last couple hours doing "MkIII" x-clamp replacement method, and it actually WORKED!!! As soon as I put it back together, it booted right up like a charm!! I am amazed, thanks so much to the authors of these methods!!!! I have been playing for a half hour or so, and no freezing what-so-ever!!!
-
ok so i said some of this already in the error codes thread but i tried lawdawgs x-clamp fix and AS5 paste, however after overheating and letting cool for 30mins i still have the 3 lights. Error code 0020. So it didnt work! I got whisper led custom fans in there so it should be cooler and an open window case.
I tried tightening and loosening screws on the gpu and cpu, but to no success.
Tommorow I will try only using nylon washer on gpu instead of nylon, than metal washer under gpu above mobo. Also might try penny mod fix. But am doubtful that I'm going to get this box to work.
Suggestions anyone for lawdawg method combination of washers? I did what he outlined but maybe less or more would help fix my problem? Maybe?

Hi, the only reason this fix will not work is because it hasnt been done word for word., the heatsinks are proberbly NOT touching the dye properly. Also try llama guide (ggle it). Sorry to say but your 360 is NOT dead unless phsyically damaged?, you need to do it word for word, make sure there is no bend in the board etc (some people it works with 3 washers some with 2 etc). I used lawadogs and used screw/washer under the board and 2 washers on the top side of the board - works just like new)
Also find out what your secondary error code is and work on THAT area, THAT is what the problem is!!. You shouldnt be messing with cpu AND gpu becuase as you fix 1 adgustment you could be messing up the other adjustment. Tighten the screws until they are hand tight and try again - DONT OVER TIGHTEN - Good luck)
-
Got a 360 for free of a mate due to the 3rlod did llama tut on the x-clamp replacement and now fully working wicked.. Shame its a banned console doh.
Had error 0020
Only changed x-clamp on Gpu not cpu
Thanks all that helped make these tuts

You shouldnt be messing with cpu AND gpu becuase as you fix 1 adgustment you could be messing up the other adjustment. Tighten the screws until they are hand tight and try again - DONT OVER TIGHTEN - Good luck)
thanks for the input, i am definitely trying multiple things today and i suppose as a last resort i will try a differant x-clamp method that includes drilling and new parts i would need to get.
question u say focus on the secondary error code how do you find that? I noticed I used to get 0022 before lawdawg fix and now i get 0020, is this secondary? Im thinking it means GPU or CPU connection/overheating/fried issue.

1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine

performed rlod fix box is working great only bad thing is now the screen has snow on it, i can still play games but annoying snow wont go away
-
Okay, first thing's first. I started with 3 lights, did the eraser trick and....nothing. Secondary code was 0020. I removed the x-clamps and replaced with screws and washers. Now the console powers up, 3 lights flash, then 2 lights, then the console powers itself down; the 2 lights continue to flash, and the secondary code is 0011 now. Any suggestions?

working all night 100% for me is a fix

1 # Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
just used another thermal compound, (akasa pro-grade 460) the store didn't have AS5, and used 5mm black steal break washers to make more pressure and they don't come off over time

First, Thanks go out to RBJtech and lawdawg0931 for all their hard work and to xbox-scene and the community.
Just wanted to add my experience...
RRoD, wouldn't boot.
Used MKIII method, bolted the heatsinks down, used AS5. Also did RBJtech's fan shroud mod.
Works perfectly, has never frozen or had another RRoD. Been running with this fix for about 6 months now, so this should give people confidence that this is a good long-term fix.

Big thanx to lawdawg0931 for this great tut... and big thanks to all users for leaving there reports...
I have completed the ROL mod and happy to say the system is running great now for 2 days.. i will update in the future..
took me a while to get it working right, at first i tightened up all screws after applying new AS5 and it would boot up normal but give me 2 red lights after 2 mins.. then i cleaned paste off again and re-did the screws, this time back to ROL, lool... Finally cleaned paste again and tightened everything up some more and let it bake for 2 mins and it has been working ever since.. No freezing issue's at all!!
too much paste kept giving me heat issue's, 2 red lights..
i hope this lasts. i just got an elite and will now use this system for mods..
people that are having trouble, just keep at it, i did and it payed off...
-
Just got done doing the x-clamp fix using RBJ's method. Works great! Had to fiddle with the screws a bit to get it to boot, but it works awesome. I am so glad it works now!
mark a yes it worked for me
(also, before i tried it with the parts listed in the OP i bought some kit off of a dutch website, i do NOT recommend buying that. It went from an error 0102 to a 0020 because it was bending the board so bad. Just a tip)
-
Just recieved another 360 with rrod today. Did lawdogs tut again and i have to say thanks again wouldnt even boot before.. ANd is now working 100% no problems..
PLUS i can get on live now with no worries
thanks again guys

Fixed problem using combination of methods. On cpu 4mm bolts with 2 washers between motherboard and HS with a spring washer and and nut then lock nut. On Gpu used adapted pentium 11 slot heatsink cut down to fit space covers slightly larger area but does not run as hot existing Gpu HS. Thanks again, took a couple of reboots to get it running but now been running for 24 hours without any glitches.
-
Fixed mine with Lawdawg0931's fix. Couldn't find 10mm screws had to cut down some 16mm ones
-
Worked great on my launch 360. I have run it for about a month now with NO issues.
Totally sweet! And many thanks!
-
i dont know in wich answer i am, but i remake the xclamp replacement but this time with Lawdawg0931's and worked at ONCE!!! amazing!!!
thanks to all!!

QUOTE(bobz9 @ Dec 25 2007, 07:09 PM)

Im surprised to say it works. I used the MkIII and throughly cleaned the chips with GoofOff and rubing alcohol before applying Arctic Silver 5.
I had to use the baking method though even though MkIII says not to, works great now.
forget that, it dont work no more
-
Worked for me. Took a lot of doing. You have to get the alignment of the heatsinks just right, or there is a problem with the join, and something just doesn't work right. At any rate, i just bloted the heatsinks down with 3 small washers and a rubber o-ring. Baked it for a while (tried pretty much every method i could find), but it wasn't working, so i started making small cahnges one at a time, and eventually i found the solution. Yay, now i don't have to shell out for a new one!
Thanks all for the guidence. Im going to try to fix my mates one tomorrow
-
Followed lawdawg procedure.
1. Fixed 3RLOD. no freezing or bad video.
-
1. fixed RROD using lawdawgs method, no freezing or video errors
-
Sorry, a little more info than needed.
Fixed my second 360 using the dawgs method. I had changed my case and for some reason got over heating issues. So I did the fan shroud mod and that worked but my xbox was REALLY loud. So I finally got tired of it and went out today and got what I needed. I can't even hear the fans now. And the air coming out is nice and cool. So it worked FANTASTIC with no problems.
-
ive happen to get error code e74... and by me snooping around all kinds of forums found that the xclamp could help so i when ahead and bought it from llama.com... when it arrive i started to tier it apart and installed... let it heat up for about two hours and cool down 30 sec and hasnt gave me that error for a while
1 for me

Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Using Lawdawg0931's method.
-
Lawldawg's worked on one system for me, and on another it wasn't enough to reflow the mobo. I have to use Llama's for that. (Same, just put fan over CPU so GPU gets extra hot, let stay w/ 3 red lights for 10-15 min.)
-
I completed the x-clamp mod yesterday after being dead in the water with 3RLOD. I have only played about 3 hours since then but so far so good!
-
mine used toget 3rol intermittently and i was going todo this ended up replacing heatsink compound with as5
and a 80mm blue led fan on the outside blow air in near CPU and has worked perfect since. only got 3rol once and not since

MkIII method. Killed motherboard by using wrong tools and pushing too hard when removing the clamps (Do it carefully people!!) A friend fixed it, then i had to let it overheat for 2 mins. because it wouldn't work. Used old AS3 instead of AS5. It's great to see it working again
Thanx a lot for all the info & support
-
Thanks for all info and support... I used LAWDAWG0931 method and RBJtech's method.
In LAWDAWG0931 method I replaced the nylon washers with the RBJtech Wave lock washers on the GPU heat sink.
I used RBJtech MkIII method on the CPU.
I got the idea of lapping the GPU and CPU from another website but I cannot find it again. I apologize for not being able to give proper credit to the individual that came up with the idea. Here's a copy of that individuals link for the parts and there tips. Good Luck.
Lapping GPu and CPu Heat sinks
Here is the sanding kit I used for http://www.easypckits.com/products/premiumlk/
The sand paper goes to 10 microns.
TIP: Be sure to use a lot of water and sand a bevel edge around the heat sink to keep from tearing the fine sandpaper.
Use a piece of glass for a flat surface. Each sandpaper should take about 10mins before you move on to the next grade.
The GPU is much harder to get super polished. The copper CPU is very soft and it's much easier with a smaller surface area.

Lawdog method worked, no freezing, no issues. Only Lasted 3 weeks then RROD.
Tried MKIII method fixed RROD but now the video is freezing 5 minutes when in game but can still hear the game (Call of Duty 4 online )
maybe i tightened the screws a little too tight. Any suggestions for a fix?

anyone, im i dire need of some help.. just got recently a 3RLOD and decided to do Lawdawg's Xclamp fix.. so far, ive been looking for the need equipment but im having a hard time getting the exact same ones because im from the philippines..we dont have the exact same things here available..
with regards to the washers ive got only some pieces ive got from a pack of screws for wooden pieces and i thought i should try improvising so i got em rubbery like ones.. is that gonna be ok in replacement with the nylon ones? and another thing ive quite anxious with is the type of thermal compound i have.. its really hard looking for arctic silver here.. but ive gotten some type of silver-based thermal paste with the brand "jetart"..would that suffice? thanks!
-
4 boxex works fine now

Just treated my 3rlod Xbox to the combination of lawdawg's and the MKI
method and so far it's working great!
-
Yeppeee!
I had the 3rlod, used RBJtech's method, MK3 ... it didn't work at first. Loosened the screws, it still didn't work.
So disconnected the fan, let the board overheat. Then let it cool down and it is all fine now!
I have a working Xbox360 now!
Thanks very much everyone.
-
I used lawdawgs method about a month ago. Been working fine, no problems at all.
-
I had the 3ROD and used the Llamma's X-Clamp Ring of Death Fix, plus used the RBJTech cooling modification and everything works great now!
-
Another one fixed. Had the 3rlod, used RBJtech's method, MK3 ... and it worked fine the first time.
I have also done all the other mods on this, ethernet activity light, fan shroud mod and the colling down mod.
Cheers
-
fixed using lawdogs method about 2 months ago.
a couple weeks after i had RLOD again but tweaking the screws and baking for 2 mins helped until recently.
i had RLOD a couple days ago but now that is fixed by loosening screws and baking only the gpu using the llama method. i also dont get disc read errors on burnout anymore. hopefully this will last!
Thanks a lot the guide!
-
Put me down for 3 (1) works greats, all pre-hdmi consoles. Heat gunned one and it lasted for a month, tried this and its going great. Did it for 2 friends and they are going good too with 0 issues. Heck i think its even running cooler or at least quieter.
-
Did not fix the 3RLOD...
doesnt make ne noise at all i didnt know for sure if it was suppose to or not but nothing happened... it does take a while for it to start blinking, unlike my other box that starts blinking right away...
-
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Error code 0102
-
OK, had my 14 month old console RRoD on me a few weeks ago.
Gathered up the goodies to do the X-Clamp replacement mod, and went to work.
On initial power up, still had RRoD, ran a heat gun on high over the GPU and CPU heatsinks for a couple of minutes, also loosened up the bolts holding them down just a hair. Waited for it to cool...
and no RRoD.
Running now for a few days, with heavy use, both games and movies. A lot of Orange Box play. No RRoD, no freeze-ups.

Try backing off on the tightness of the bolts. Even with washers, they can sometimes get too tight and warp the motherboard.
...or it could be the opposite. Never torque the screws too much, but you want good contact between the heatsinks and the chips.
-
Did the Lawdawg0931 Method. Booted right up. Working even since no problem, No freezing. Been working for past 2 months. Got parts at Home Depot, fixed later that day. Error code? sry not sure, but the GPU thermal past was Cooked, I mean Really cooked.
Put another one in the WIN column.
Thankyou for putting this thread together, Thankyou to Lawdawg0931, and Thankyou to xbox-scene for helping us hack the box!

Used Lawdawg's method as it seemed easier and had the 0102 Error code
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Infact, I think it works better then before! Awesome fix and appreciate the info for setting this up right!
And to think, I was going to pay like $60 for such an easy procedure o.0
-

I did the X-clip replacement yesterday and now my 360 says Update failure: unable to locate HDD? any idea's HDD work in my other system, and plugging in the ethernet cable doesn't work either?
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Did the Lawdawg0931 Method. After a couple of bolt tightenings it booted up. Working ever since no problems, No freezing. Been working for the past month. Got parts at Home Depot don't know what the error code was.
-
Used lawdawg0931's procedure and the parts list from Home Depot as posted by Iriez. My 3RLOD are gone, but the HD parts extend too far from the board. When reinstalling the MoBo, the board will flex as the screws are installed. So ... I'm sitting with a box that now works (Yippee!!), but can't reassemble. Now it's off to Lowe's to see if I can find screws with a thinner head.
1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues other than not being able to reassemble, time will tell how it works once other screws are located.
-
mine is fixed code 0102 i was lucky if it would go on for 1 min i have used it for about 12 hour so far work great.
-
Just finished doing the fix. Works perfectly =)
Completely fixed, you wouldn't believe how happy I was
-
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.

Fixed code 0102.. required a 12v fan mod to keep it from freezing but now 100%.
-
Did X-clamp fix and got rid of RROD, but now I got 2 blinking lights instead. I've tried loosening and tightening the screws and same everytime. It goes to 2 blinking lights instantly.
Put me down for a failure. This is going in the trash where it belongs. Time to get me a console that won't break down after 6 months.
-
Fixed Rrod have played for 7 hours with out a problem
-
Where the hell is the edit button? I used it last time, and now its gone...
Anyway, I removed the top layer of washers, because I noticed the heatsink wasn't sitting on the chips very tightly. After doing so, I got it to RROD again. I think I am gonna have to cut out the bottom of the metal case because the screws are pushing down against the case, probably flexing the motherboard. I would think that is not good. So you can delete my previous failure post. It looks like it's gonna work now, as soon as I get something to cut out the bottom of the case. Probably will use a dremel.

Never trash it.... eBay it, with a clear explanation of your RRoD. Many will buy it for parts (You might want to explain you did an X-Clamp mod to it, as well).
Most get between $75 to $100.

Hi all,
I just joined and am amazed at all the issues with this system. I tried the washer spacer trick and overheated the chips to get them to reseat yet I still get the 3RLoD. I followed the specs exactly and it is still failing. Is there another reason it could be failing other than overheating? I saw a forum about error codes, and was able to figure out its a 0022 error.
Is there anything else that can be done or is it toast? If so, any ideas on where I can get a motherboard?
Thanks for any help you can give,
Keith

It has been 2-3 months after fix. It started to freeze a lot in the past 2-3 days, then RRoD this evening. I'm going to try the cook bit again... maybe some solder came loose? Let's hope so.

Notch up another X-clamp replacement success
Was 0102 and now its running fine
It was a bargain RLOD from ebay and now its working fine and sports a 3.5mm audio out socket and a VGA port all thanks to some clever peeps on this forum

1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Got the Xbox off of eBay for only 80 bucks. Fixed it last night by using 3 steel washers underneath the board and nothing on the top. At first I tightened it WAY too much and I could visibly see the board warped. I loosed each bolt by 4 turns (pretty loose) and by God it worked! I had to send off my power supply with my warranty console so I can't do much further testing. Ordered a Talismoon fan last night and I'm gonna do a window/paint job. Thanks Xbox-Scene! Also, my first post!

I've already fixed my second RRoD on this console. All that I did after getting the RRoD for the second time was loosen the screws on both heatsinks, run xbox until overheat shutdown (two lights), re-tighten screws while hot, cool for 5 minutes. Hope I get another 2-3+ months before this happens again...
-
Ugh. So I just got the RRoD again about 1 hour into testing it to see if it was fixed. Guess it isn't. I went through the steps AGAIN and everything appeared to be fixed AGAIN. This time, I was able to play for a few hours with no problems. It wasn't until I put the case back together when I got the RRoD for the fourth time. So, I went through the steps AGAIN, put the case back together and found out that if I have a fan blowing on the side of the 360 while it's on, it doesn't get the RRoD. I'm thinking that it's overheating? Has anyone else had this problem?
I was thinking that the getting the http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/zz-360-xaof could solve my problem?
*when I say steps, I mean: loosen screws on heatsink, run xbox w/out fan until overheats, re-tighten screws and cool down. I don't remove the heatsinks.
-
Caught the RRoD bug (error 0102) on an early version of the 360. Ran good for about a year. Installed the Talismoon whisper and applied 12 volt mod straight from the underside of mainboard (originally off the DVD power rail) shortly after I bought this system.
Applied the X-clamp fix using a kit from Ebay (M5/nylon/metal washer thing). Used Arctic Silver 5, reassembled after clamping down pretty good on the bolts. Did the overheat/cooldown procedure using Llama's tutorial (fan cooling CPU only - GPU overheat).
After trying this, continued to error only THIS time it was error 0020 (unknown error). Ran a few more cycles of heat/cool but 0020 remained.
Finally, on a last ditch effort I tore the whole thing down, cleaned and reapplied the thermal grease, this time I covered the bottom of the chassis with electrical tape strips on the suspect that something was shorting out on the underside of the mainboard (12 volt access was already covered with tape pretty good).
Also, did not tighten the bolts down super tight, only mildly snug.
At the moment it works without any apparent freezing after a few hours of running a video off the HDD.
Thanks again to Xbox-Scene, Llama and Lawldog (and anyone else involved) for this fix.

Hidden Sniper
A couple of cooling fans would be a great idea, I had a similar experience until I added extra cooling which I think is the solution to keeping your 360 on the up and up. I replaced the stock rear fans with some red Talismoon whispers, also I added the XCM add on fan in front of the CPU and to the right of the DVD drive and attached it to an old 9V cordless phone AC Adaptor, and then I replaced the thermal compound with good old Artic Sliver, and pulled a CPU fan from an old PC and attached it to the back of the CPU heat sink and it's powered by one of the USB ports.
-
Success here as well. Under the board used one metal and one nylon washer. Above the board used a single nylon washer, and tightened screws moderately. Applied new thermal paste as well. RROD was gone without overheating, but did it anyway just to be safe as Llamma tutorial states.
-
Worked without issue for 4months

I have been fixing all the RRoD, no problem things were looking great cause my turn around time is one tops. People love that, so they were flying in my home like dust all around the state, until i got this genius's xbox with a red face place, as though get RRoD wasn't enough red in the mix.
I fix his RRoD with E74 error work fine for about an hour, right be for RRoD, the Fan runs at a really high RPM and then boom...well need i say it..yep...the RRoD...
After Spending all the time doing the X-clamp RRoD return like it was mean to be, now I have to go back and do all these retracking...
However i did notice water mark on the 360 motherboard, which is stange...any idea what that could be from?
Thank You!
Arigato gozaimashita!

Just wanted to msg my xbox is working, but it seems to heat up abit faster then ussual!!
thnaks man

GPU video issues, never actually had RED ring error. Color distortion at first and then no video at all. So glad it's working!

I've just fixed my 360 using RBJtechs method and works fine now
.
I'm in the UK and had a bit of trouble finding parts but got them from B&Q,
Used:
Machine bolts Pan head slot 5mm by 16mm (10 in a pack) £1.78 code AVF-853760 (didn't cut these and they fit ok)
Nylon washers 6mm (25 in a pack) £2.98 code AVF-856921
Flat steel washers 5mm (10 in a pack) £1.27 code AVF-852336
Got the heat sink paste from Maplin
couldn't get Artic silver 5, so used Antec Formula 5 it has the same properties as Artic silver 5
cost £8.99
took me some time to clean the old thermal paste off but got there in the end
I first tried using 3 steel washers and 1 nylon washer to space the motherboard off the casing, used 1 steel washer and 1 nylon washer to space the heatsinks off the motherboard but using this set up give me 2 red lights instead
so re-tried using 2 steel washers and 1 nylon washer for spacing off the casing and just the 1 nylon washer for spacing the heatsinks worked perfect
have been playing on the 360 for hours and its so far working ok
my advice to anyone who's thinking of having a go is do it if your consoles bust and out of warranty then you've nothing to lose.
i just find it amazing the microsoft put together a console with such a major flaw!
-
console will not boot rrod
not sure what error code as i had a custom rf board but new it was the heatsinks as when i pressed down on the gpu one the console booted
used rbjtechs mk3 method as im in the uk so i used
Machine bolts Pan head slot 5mm by 16mm (10 in a pack) £1.78 code AVF-853760 (didn't cut these and they fit ok)
Nylon washers 6mm (25 in a pack) £2.98 code AVF-856921
Flat steel washers 5mm (10 in a pack) £1.27 code AVF-852336
Antec Formula 5
tim cleaner and lint free wipes
used 1 steel and 2 plastic washers for the spacer between the board and chassis and one plastic washer slightly sanded down for the xclamp spacer
working now without an issue only tested for 2 hours so far with THE CLUB no issues as of so far
i did have to do alot of unscrewing rescrewing etc before it started booting every tiime
thanks to those who provided the good info
-
originally had the 0102 error Tried the x-clap fix, noticed the power supply would stay orange (still in standby mode) but get 3 red rings, this time error code 0001...anyone had this?ran out of ideas now,
cheers

Hi guys, I guess as my first official post on XbS I will tell my tale of the X-Clamp replacement.
First, I opened my RROD box and all of it's parts without a snag. Removed xclamps, cleaned off chips until they shined my nice ugly face back at me. I then applied thermal #5 and all items recommended (for the mod without having to drill case holes). Put the box back together and ran with it for about six months.
At about the six month mark it fries up again. I try pulling it apart and snugging everything up with no success this time. So basically I have an xbox360 mb with all its guts sitting around waiting for something to do with.
I guess some may have long term success some may not.

I used RBJtech's MKIII and it appears to have fixed the issue. I only played PGR4 for a half hour or so, but everything appears fine. Thanks to everyone involved for sharing their fixes.
I was surprised to see how inadequate the MS supplied cooling is for the device. Those heatsinks heat up mighty fast. I was pretty pissed when I got the RRoD because I rarely use my 360. I had no errors or issues until 2 weeks ago when I hooked up a USB drive to watch a HD wmw file. The system never powered on. I reset it and I got the dreaded RRoD. I had used it to watch one hour of HD a week earlier and before that, I hadn't turned on the unit since the first week of January. The device was a year and a half old, I babied it and STILL I got the damn RRoD. I guess it's just a matter of time...

Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
fixed my wife's 360 (got it from a friend he said if i fix i can keep)
spent about $9 at lowes cause i got extra parts

yeah ... looks like the 3RROD is also related to the power supply ... after I fixed my 360 I had a 3RROD today, and then it smelled like burn plastic, the power supply was dying, I tried with a fiend's PS and the 360 was ok ...

Fixed 3ROD on 3 boxes so far.
Results - box1 Played Orange Box for over 2 months, about 4 to 5 hours a night. X-clamp on both CPU/GPU
box2, fixed but continue to get E74, don't no if that one can be fixed.
box3, fixed and has been running for over 4 hours now, however, everytime I put a DVD or Music CD in , it starts playing and then about 2 to 3 mins, the box shut off, and I get 2 red lights flashing /
\
Could this be a DVD drive failure.
I really didn't pay attention to type of drive (Hitashi I believe, don't know the Rom ver)
Any help or can someone point me to the correct forum for any answers.

your overheating. check your thermal paste and heat sink height (i had this problem when the gpu heatsink was 3 washers high)

After fixing the RROD I got it again this w/e, but it was due to the power supply (some how it was overheating or something, the thing smelled like burned plastic!!!), so I hacked the 360 PS and used a 400w 20A PC power supply, now everything is ok!
-
Thank you guys so much, fixed the 3 red rings, no problems so far.
-
Add two ones to my collection.
- Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine
Got an old successfully repaired one back though, it had been working perfectly for a half year.
Have to look at it what happened...

Hai, I had completed MkIII method and I am in the last step of heating the console... But when I switch the console on, the fan starts rotating and then stops Still shows RROD... Orange light glows in the power brick... Console is dead cold even after leaving the power on for 10 minutes... Removed all cables and reconnected & Still no result.. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks...

I just wanted to express my thanks to all who contributed to this fix of the 3rod.I opted for Lawdawgs fix followed it very carefully and voila....success.I now am an instant 360 guru to my son who was very distraught when he seen those dreaded red lights and i was pleased greatly only having to fork over 8 $$ for the repair. Its been 5 days and the box has around 35 hrs of game time on it ,even i jumped in on some halo 3 .You guy's keep up the good work again many thanks

Hooray. Xbox had error 1020, or something like that. Didn't use any washers either. Does seem to make slightly more fan noise. But who cares, it works!

Had the same problem when playing a game it would freeze after about a minute. MKIII says freezing is due to poor cooling and to point a fan at the GPU heatsink to cool it to prove that it is due to heating, but no, it still froze, so I believe it is due to the GPU x-clamp replacement nuts not being tightened enough. So anyway I then tightened those nuts pretty hard (until it was difficult to tighten any further) and overheated the GPU using llama's method of placing a fan on the CPU but not the GPU (so that the CPU didn't heat and allowed the GPU to overheat). Something I haven't mentioned is that the xbox was red ring of death as soon as it booted up after tightening those bolts and was not even allowing me to get any further like before (when the bolts weren't as tight). After 15 minutes I turned it off for about 5 minutes, then turned it back online and it booted to dashboard. I then started media center and watched some TV I had recorded for about an hour, but that doesn't really push the GPU because I could watch TV previously when the bolts weren't as tight (games would freeze as mentioned). So then I started a game of Crackdown which I use to test for freezing and I just finished playing that for about an hour so all is looking good.
I have been reworking the x-clamp replacement "fix" that a modder in Melbourne did for me and said he has to deem my 360 as "unrepairable". He reconned some 360's are just too far gone. I knew there was hope and didn't think he tried hard enough. So I opened it up (since he gave me a 1 year warranty with the fix but after 4 months said he wouldn't work on it again! (I had sent it back to him 3 times and had enough of paying postage anyway)).
Yeah sorry this is getting long but I'll give my circumstance.
When I looked at his work I found that underneath the GPU the motherboard had a serious amount of flex (I took a photo). He used the shim method but only used 2 washers instead of the 3 that are recommended so there was a lot of stress on the GPU and mb I believe. I took his 'fix' apart and redid it with the recommended 3 washers but couldn't get the fix to be reliable enough. Final things I did was clean off the old compound (he even left MS old gunk on there along with some new gunk but I bet he didn't replace the thermal compound every time he took the heatsink off). Anyway I made the heatsink and GPU and CPU shiny and applied some arctic silver - I don't think there was enough on there previously, looked a little thin. After putting it all back together and tightening down it was RROD and then as I said I did the overheat GPU (llama idea) and now all is working about 2 hours in and I think this is now stable. So I don't think freezing is due in all cases to cooling, the main problem is that all the points of the GPU aren't connecting/cracked and needed to be tight and overheated. Due to the overheating method working for me I don't believe anyone that says overheating the GPU won't liquify the solder balls (if it doesn't liquify the solder it certainly does 'something' positive - perhaps it has warped my board rbj suggests? doesn't bother me, it works when nothing else has so it's good as a last resort, just make sure the bolts are tight but the board isn't flexing before overheating it). I might come back in a month or so and give an update, I just want to say I'm not impressed with how the modder handled my 360, basically thought it was too hard and couldn't be bothered with me and I'm lucky he didn't cause irreversible damage by putting so much pressure on the motherboard.
Note I have also placed 4mm rubbers between the metal case and the motherboard but I lost one of them because double sided tape doesn't stick too well (I got it out of the case) so it currently has 3x4mm high rubbers underneath 3 of the ram chips. Not sure if this will help or not but I figured it could do no hard to try something to stop the board from flexing downward.

Fixed RROD with RBJtech's fix
2nd error code e79 fixed

idk dont care. will be selling it. lol.
thanks guys

Even though my xbox was still under warranty i still tried your method to fix the 3 rings of death. I started yesterday but realized that my dog had eaten some of my washers.....bastard. So i went to the store and picked up some more and finished it up today and its ACTUALLY WORKING!!!!! thanks man your a fucking god. I'll keep you posted on how long it works for.
-
I did the thing lastnight and it DID NOT WORK.
I dont know what i did wrong. I did it twice. Nothing happened. Then i did the towel trick
and nothing!!! the 3red lights are still THERE!!!
WHY??!!!
can anyone help me?

Did lawdawg's method - failed: went from 0020 to error code 1020 and 1 red light
Let it heat up for 2 minutes and no change
Anyhow have any ideas? Anyone ever fixed 1020 before??
-
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine. (3x)
Fixed 3 xboxes with the RJB method!
-
So far another success for the X-Clamp. Had RLOD - 0102 error.
Core 360 - Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine
Some finer notes.
Brought the parts from Australian Bunnings. Couldn't find nylon washers, so eventually brought a kit on ebay. Yeah I know, but it was fairly cheap and it arrived very quick. Later found out that Jaycar (electronic's shop) has nylon washers, so try them if an aussie.
Did the replacement on the GPU only. Did as stated by lawdawg0931. Tried the 2 minute cook, nothing much happened. Tried some graphic intensive games (COD4, Assassin's Creed) [console was still apart] and worked great. Left it for a few hours, had dinner. Put console back together, switched on and straight away - overheat 2 RLOD. WTF!!
Opened console again and tried tighting the X-Clamp bolts (slighty). I again tried the same games, but longer. Worked great. Left it for few hours again. Put console back together, switched on and .... Yay it worked. LOL.
It's been just over a month and it seems fine, no glitches or anything. So thanks to everyone involved.

Sorry FenixFMJ, I'm not much help at the moment, but you stated 1 red light. Is there an E** error on screen? I thought the hidden error codes were only for 3RLOD.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Fixed 2 boxes using this method.
1 Elite and 1 launch console.
Seems like they're working just fine now.
Thank you very much for the fix.

Ive been fixing 360s for almost a year now
i've done shit loads of them
and only ever had 1 come back
all done with the mrk 2 method
the first one i fixed is still runnin sweet now almost a year on never crashs , never glitchs works like a dream
and the one that did come back it was down to my error (only put 1 washer on one of the feet when all others had 2 washers which meant it was unevenly spread.
Ive had a handfull that have gave me problems afew times but tweak the nutz a little and they fire up
if anyone ever has a issue with the 3 red lights stayin on even after u have overheated it try untighting the nutz on the heat sink to your left ( the flat heatsink ) i had a box that would only go back to 3 red lights after i had loosened up the nutz on that heatsink.
Splatsers
Anyone need any info or help holla me at [email protected]

I thought I would share my success of fixing 2 out of 2 rrod xbox 360's
First off what I have done was remove the oem thermal crap from everything, Including any extra stuff all over the gpu/cpu.
The in place of thermal paste I use automotive Dielectric thermal silicon compound. That stuff is good from -40c to 400c, its cheaper, and works great. I have one now on my desk where I did it to the gpu but not the cpu side and the cpu side is now MUCH hotter then the gpu side, did the fan mod, running dead or alive 4 for several hours.
After doing that I use a heat gun and heat the entire mobo, and gpu/cpu heat sinks to the point you cannot hold it, ANY part of the board in fact, I mean this sucker is H O T.
Then I put it back together. I have had it work without going further on one that has been going now for over 2 months after doing this to.
The other I been having hell with, it would run for about a hour, then give me the rrod again, and I stumbled into this thread seeing about the xmod.
After reading it I wondered why so many steps and parts? I did my own mod using the large fan screws you get with new case fans. They fit the holes of the gpu and cpu fine, and dont get in the way of the lower case/heatsink. So I have removed my gpu heat sink, and in place of the brace and stuff just screwed in my fan screws till it was flush with the heat sink,a nd sat on the gpu like it should, then proceeded with my heat gun to heat the sucker up.
Needless to say this xbox has now been going for 8 hours so far non stop without a single problem running the dead or alive game, this is the one I done the fan mod to, and only one side has the ac copper thermal compound and the gpu side the Dielectric stuff, and is cooler on the gpu side of the fans. I will be doing the gpu side soon, for I wanted to see which kept things cooler just for the hell of it on here. I ran out of it, and just got back this morning from the parts store with a new tube of the stuff. you can still use regular thermal paste, I just like this stuff better for it keeps stuff cooler, and is soooooo much cheaper.
So so far I have taken my $150 investment on 2 broken xbox 360's both with rrod, and have gotten them both to work now. one just replacing the oem thermal pad and using my heat gun, and the other doing that, plus the Jmod. I will report back if the 2nd continues to work after trying my idea of the xmod by just using 8 case fan screws only to hold the cpu and gpu heat sinks down, and my Dielectric Silicone thermal paste. Incase you must need to know, this stuff is what is used on cars for the ignition moduals because they get as hot, or hotter then a cpu, and again is a ton cheaper at $7 for a huge tube of the crap. my automotive experience paying off a bit, and been using this stuff for years on pc's.
Just thought I would kick in how I fixed 2 of them so far that others can try.
-
I just used my inferred atomic temp meter and the air on the cpu side is 110f the gpu side is 107f
The cpu hs shows 118f at the center and gpu is at only 106f, so its pretty much the same as the air coming out the back of the 360 taking the reading directly off the heat sinks. I am very happy with this.
And again Im using AC Copper paste on the cpu and the dielectric silicone stuff on the gpu. Will test the cpu side again after I do it up with the dielectric stuff.
If anyone else has this type of temp unit Id like to know what they are getting from the back, and right off their heat sinks if not too much trouble.

So whats the longest someones box has lasted after fixing the 3rlod via the x-clamp replacement ? Mine started off with 3rlod and error code 0020. I have done it with success so far 4 days at about 4-5 hours a day. I have also cut the back metal behind the fans to help airflow, did the shroud mod and wired the gpu fan to 12v. So far so good loud as hell but it works. Got the box from a guy here for a good price and i figured if i didnt fix it i had a spare for parts. It looked like it was a failed attempt at someone changing the thermal paste, heatsinks were scratched up like someone took a flat head screwdriver to them so i sanded them smooth with some 1000 grit paper then wetsanded to make sure it was nice and smooth and applied antec 5 on them. Just hopeing it dont go out on me again.
-
I had a RROD didnt checked the error code first try didnt worked then it checked for Error code it was 0020 and I thought this was the one which is impossible to make, but used a modified version of usaul technique, used automobile screws and iron washers with proper gap in between and heat sink glue now the console is back I did 25 tries to get it done properly and my console doesnt even freezes slightly now which it did initally.
Also i removed only GPU clamp, CPU clamp I didnt even touched it. So error 0020 succesfully removed by X-clmap technique
-
Used Lawdawg's X-Clamp method - Fixed 3RLOD
Details:
Have this 360 since launch, never failed till 3 days ago while playing guitar hero III for first time.. 3ROLD, error 0102. Nway, bought x-clamp kit from eBay (was to lazy to go lowes or homedepot) and it was missing a steel washer but I used one more nylon as a replacement.
Put some ceramic white "Stars Corp Heatsink Compound" on cleaned die (spent 1h shining both dies to mirror look.. hope this paste its good enough for the effort), cleaned heatsink and put some more there. Had to hammer the case where the screws sitted cuz motherboard would've bent if not.
Turned the box, no more 3RLOD. Did llama's baking method (cool CPU while heating 13mins GPU) just in case. So far it's been great, no more freezes. Will buy talismoon whisper max for more cooling and will always try to idle on dashboard for 5mins before turning off xbox.
-
So far i have done 10,
first 3 with MK1, then the last 7 with mK3 RBJTECH...
all worked flawlessly..
one came back with rrod, i recalibrate the screws and has been runniong fine for the last 10 hours or so ....
-
I used lawdogs method to fix my xbox. When reinstalling the motherboard to test, I noticed that I had to push down on the board to make the connections becuase the board was sitting too high. At first, I thought the new bolts were holding up the board, but on further inspection, I found the board itself was warped (high at the four corners). Everything came into alingment when I put the box togeather. During the test, the system worked first time. I did heat the CPU until the overheating indicator came on, but then I shut the unit off immediately. I say if it's not broke, don't fix it.
Here's hoping it stays fixed.
-
did my first xbox using mkIII. not the same bolts and stuff, but just washers i had lying around in my van lol.
worked great. thanks for the tutorial
-
Awesome! I had a box sitting around for 5 months and was about to trash it, and thought what the hell... I can try this for less than 10 bucks. Followed the tutorial and BLAM, she works perfect now! It sure is sweet to bring an xbox back from death.
-
Completed 4 of these including my own which was running smooth for over 8 months up until recently (nothing to do with 3ROL so will post in other section for help)
Anyhoos, followed the MK1 for all and 100% success. superb
Incidentally dont know if anyone follows the http://rbjtech.bulldoghome.com/pages/rbjtech_bulldoghome_com/XClamp.htm MK1 method still.. but I recently noticed that B&Q have revamped the part numbers for all parts, didnt take me long to find the replacements but the list may require an update.
Next time I go I'll get the numbers, meant to keep hold of them to let someone know but the other half must have cleaned up
cheers
-
I successfully fixed my 360 using the x-clamp method by Lawdawg. I had error code 0020.
I had to remove one layer of the metal washers though to properly apply enough pressure on the gpu.
I didn't need to "bake" my x-box. Been working for about a month now.
-
I have replace X-clamp, RROD disappear... i can boot now. THX you ALL
-
so i did the thermal compound and Xclamp fix. i fire it up and hooray its all green, only problem is my fans arent starting. I have connected the power cord for it to mobo but it just wont start. after a min or two of running the system 2red lights(overheating).
also another problem not related to the fix or fans is my dvd drive fails to open. i removed the plastic xbox logo case from it and tryed diagnosing it further but..seems as if it get stuck. any one else experience this problem?
-
"1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine"
Working for now, fingers crossed it'll stay working!! I replaced the thermal compound paste on it before and it lasted 2 weeks so this time I've given it the works..... Made in 2005 and never failed me before until around a month ago, there was no freezeing.. just the 3 red rings of death..
Installed washers - RRoD
Continued to "Bake" it - Working fine so far
Secondary Error Code: 0102
-
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine
-
Hi, I had 0020 error and now after doing the X-Clamp i get E74 and sometimes E73....
Didn't work me!
-
Fixed the 3RLOD using Lawdawg0931's method. Had error 0020. I didn't bake the GPU (yet) as I never had any overheating, video, or artifact issues prior to the 3RLOD. I've had no issues playing for 20+ hours this past weekend. I also did RBJtech's fan shroud modification and have Talismoons on order. One thing to note for those that can't find the right screws in metric. I used 10 x 32 x 1/2" screws from home depot and 5mm metal washers and #5 nylon washers. There was too much of a gap using 2 washers (1 metal and 1 nylon) both above and below the board so I removed the metal washer on the top side of the board and the heatsink then fit perfectly snug. I used a level to ensure that 1 metal and 1 nylon washer below the board was the perfect elevation to screw the board in place without needing to bend or drill the case.
-
Had 1 red light and error code 074.I did the x clamp mod as per RBJ Tech and everything is hunky dorey
Thanks
-
It was a success!
I used Lawdogs method, and RBJ's fan shroud method. I had to cut out a square in the bottom of the metal casing because the heads on my screws were too big. I didnt put any of the plastic casing back on at all in hopes of preventing the RROD from ever happening again.
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine
I used the ceramique stuff instead of arctic silver (same idea and company). I waited exactly two minutes but mine went straight to 2 lights. I never saw 3 red lights. I used the Lowe's part numbers. It's only been a couple days but I've been running it for very long periods of time. I'll report if it suddenly doesn't work. Thanks everyone!!!!
-
Took some methods from different tutorials around this site and on llama.com, eventually got it working perfectly with no freezing and no more RROD. Only tested today though, but I'm confident that it worked.
However, many guides have you over heat the xbox by either removing the cooling fans or using a towel or whatever, but what ended up working best for me was placing the fans on top of the cpu to keep it cool while heating up the GPU, since that's what I was trying to fix anyway. Worked out swell after overheating the GPU.
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine
Used LAWDAWG method and lowes parts. 1 day of heavy gaming time will tell if its fixed, will soon be adding extra cooling to it.
-
i need some help, i am getting error 0102, i know the fault will be fixed with one of these methods as applying pressure onto the top of the xbox will allow it to boot. Now i have tried Lawdawgs method, nothing at all though, simple red lights 0102, i have only put on 3 washers however, the order being, heatsink/ 2 washers/ mobo/1 washer/machine screw. I cant understand the need for two washers on each side, however i may be wrong, i have also experimented with loosening the screws from slack to ultra tight. im stuck guys please help
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine
Lawdawg method. Had some problem to get rid of the 0020 error but
found out that the screws could not be too tight to prevent the flexing of
the area of the chips (could see a bulb on the back of the board where the chip was).
Used only one iron washer each side of the motherboard. No filter/nylon washer.
-
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine
used lawdawg's method with parts dvsone specified in the lawdawg thread. had to use 4 washers under the motherboard for the GPU, it was a little loose and would freeze and corrupt the graphics. running fine after 6 games and 30mins idle for around 3 hours.
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine
LawDawg method with Lowe's parts.
I did have to alter it a bit since my Lowes didn't have the phillips screws but it did have the screws with same specs but with hex heads. Those heads are a bit bigger so I only needed the nylon washer on the bottom and then a nylon and metal on the top. (Using both on the bottom made the motherboard sit too high and tightening the case screws flex the board. Issue was fixed before tightening down the case screws but then broke again after tightening them. Eliminating the bottom metal washer produced my completely successful results).
I have been playing Rainbow Six Vegas 2 for several hours with no problems. (It is the game that froze up 3 times before the box decided to go 3RLOD.
We'll see how long it lasts. For 5 bucks, anything is better than nothing.
-
Worked for me I did the 12 penny fix since november and it finally quit working so I did the xclamp replacement this time so far so good. I couldnt find all the parts I needed but improvised with 6 mm washer's and some slightly differant screws and my 360 been runnin about 4 hours now no issues. Thanks for the fix.
-
I have one 360 banned and one with 3rlod
the one with 3rlod already had the x clamp fix
so i took the old thermal compound and put new
and it didnt work
any suggestions of interchanging parts
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
I used lawdawgs method part #'s and all. Thanks for fix.
-
Fixed the 0102. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
I made a combination of both techniques and it worked on the first time. Is this fix reliable over the time?
-
fixed 0020 error. Was freezing after a few minutes of play. Did LAWDAWG's fix and seems to be working fine now! My son will be so happy. He would clear out a spot in the room just to throw a fit when it froze on him.
-
put me down for a success. played for 5 hours in a row. rainbow six las vegas 2. running w/o a problem so far. had 3 red lights before. no all green.
I used RBJs method. I used arctic ceramique on the CPU / GPU. I also hacked the back of the case like on his site and did the shroud mod. put a heatsink on ram 1 and 2 and on the other chip that RBJ put one on. I also put thermal adhesive on the tops of the pads and let it dry so it was hard. added a little ceramique on the ram. on first bootup.. it went 3 red.. then 2 red... I powered it off quickly .. made some adjustments to the screws.. works great now!! thanks to everyone who helped in making or made this mod!!
-
I did whatever method was on llama. It made me made, i ordered a fix kit and some arctic 5 stuff, and then when i got it, i realized i needed two fix kits, so i got my lazy a$$ up and went to home depot myself, and got all the pieces i needed.
It its working amazing now, even though it would randomly give me the three lights before, but i played it for a bit then boxed it up again. Im afraid to play it now that its fixed, in case i need to sell it to pay my credit card bill, haha.
-
Used Llama method works, no freezing. 6 hrs so far
-
"1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine"
Used Llama method and works perfectly, no freezing.
3 days and more than 10 hours of gaming.
Thanks to all members providing valuable information.
Happy gaming...

Used lawdawgs method (slightly modified, couldn't find the right parts). Added heatsinks to chips/mem, and did the fan shroud mod.
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Finished Burnout Paradise and I'm halfway through Lost Odyssey, so quite a lot of gaming-time.

One more box is fixed by using the MK3-assembly. THX 4 that!
The manufaturing date of this box is 07/2006 - and the surface of the GPU heatsink was very bad - I had to sand it to a plain surface - togehther with MX-2 compound (instead of AS5) it now works without freezin`... so far!

Mines Been Up for about 4 weeks now After a major all night Halo lan party no freezing or any sign of problems,
I slightly changed the Mod as I didn't have all the bits but for those who are on a budget or want a ghetto fix all you need is:
1 cd spindle case (the clear top bit)
8 x m6 bolts
and a hole punch
I punched out 8 holes around the edge of the spindle case then cut around the holes to make 8 plastic washers.
then asembled them in the the following order.
LLLLLLLLLL Heatsink
------- Washer
------- Washer
__________Pcb
OOOOO Bolt going all the way through
Hopefully my little diagram makes sense!

i had 3 ROD, then i did the towel trick. it was going strong but then i heard X-clamp replacement thing and i got interested and planned to do it. remember my 360 was working after the towel trick(i was playing Burnout Paradise)
now i did this X-Clamp mod and then successfully booted up 360 and now for over two hours, no RRoD yet. but the problem is that console doesn't detect my wireless controller, tried sync'ing them, but the lights on controller keeps flashing and the lights on console goes off after those syncing flashing pattern. 360 boots up when i press the guide button on controller and also the controller turns off when i shut the console viz. power button on the console. I didn't hear this type of problems from those who have done the X-Clamp mod, why me? is there any fix over it?
X-Clamp Mod for me = huge success
apart for the controller thing
. u know 360 console without controller is kinda useless
-
Will this work for no video?
Thnkz.
-
Last night I used the lawdawg0931's method after the eraser method stopped working for me after six months. The X-Clamp replacement worked perfectly and immediately.
FYI: Japan hardware stores recognize and stock the M5 screws, and nylon washers were easy to find.
Thanks to all for their advice and information.

After gleaming about my own success with this fix, my friend talked me into fixing his RROD as well last night.
Please add two: "1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine" to the running total!
(One for me, and one more for my friend's.)
Thanks much!

1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine
Used MK I. But I overheated the GPU until i got the 2 flashing lights (1,4), about 8-9 min. Also made the "Fan Shroud Coolong Mod" from RBJTech's homepage.
Thanks alot!

1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine
I used Lawdawg's method. It was touch and go for a while, then I realized putting the heatsinks on in the correct orientation helps a lot.

Well those frickin x clamps were a bitch
, only thing i had small enough was a ice pick
.
Half a bottle of red in me
and dont i skate that dam ice pick screaming across the mainboard
then crashing into a capasitor to make it stop
. i was prying pretty hard , i screamed like a girl as i ran for a magnafine glass
, got lucking being the underside. tossed it all back together and soon as i turned it on where ya do the burn in the rod was gone!
, i had cranked those bitches down enough to have them shitty contacts connect again (still ran the O.H.)
So worked great , thanks to the guys who came up with it!!

Thank you Lawdawg for ure tutorial
If anybody in Sweden wants to know, i bought the screws and washers (brickor) in Bauhaus, they have it in Biltema to but they were sold out...
-
1. FIXED 3ROD straight way but still overheated for 3 mins
Very happy and recommended to all
-
I just applied the x-clamp replacement to my friend's 360 and i used only M5x20 hex head bolts and 2 sizes of nylon washers and it works great. The trick was not to get the bolts too tight. In the furure i will add a drop of red loktite to the bolt head where it touches the chassis so it does not back out or move. Thanks to all who have added to this thread.
-
Used Rbjtechs method took abit of fiddling around with the screw tension but all fine after 2 weeks.

Holy Shnike!!
I googled searched for my 360 problem and eventually made my way here.
Surprisingly the "heat gun" method worked. Only took 2 hours and i went slow.
No problems.
If you are having trouble finding exactly how to do the heat gun method use the link below.

Just fixed my 360 with the xclamp replacement + new termal paste arctic silver 5.
I used to have error code 0020.
Workes like a sharm!
Hope it's a permanent fix.
Hey hbombgosu.
Your problem with two red lights blinking means your console is over heated.
Did you put on new termal paste? Artic silver 5 is recomended
-
Just did another xbox with the x-clamp fix and....

had a 3rlod, cried. searched for this tut.
went through this procedure.
Didn't work at first. had to add an extra fan by splitting the power to the origional fan.
Cut out the "X" shape on the bottom of the steel case and aimed the new fan there. Dun think i'll have any problems now.
Thanx all

Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Had error code 0020. Used RBJTech's MkIII instructions with parts from Lowe's including a shim for the GPU heatsink. Cleaned off existing heatsink paste and applied artic silver 5. At first it booted fine to dash but when I tried to load a game I got two red lights. I loosened each GPU heatsink screw one quarter of a turn and it has been working fine for the past 6 hours.

3LODs with error code 0020
Followed Lawdawg method.. Couldnt find nylon washers, so improvised by padding the metal ones with plastic stickers and using only a single padded washer on each side.
Result: Fixed the 3LODs... played a quick round of SVR2007, no issues. Posting this within 30mins of the fix. Hope the console stays this way.

Fixed my 360 with numerous problems (No video, 3red lights[0020] and the power button would stay green sometimes but the console wouldnt boot)
Followed lawdogz method but slightly adjusted.
I Put two 5mm washers on one side and one on the other, as i couldnt find any nylon washers. Then bolted it with a 5x10mm screw.
Working fine now no problems at all.
Cheers guys. Im just hoping itll last untill GTA.

Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
So my warranty was already voided because my dvd drive failed about 4 months ago, and I repaired that myself. Just got the RROD, initially with error code 0102. I followed this procedure (although my parts were slighly different because I used what I had at the house) and then was still getting RROD, but the error code was now 0020. After closely inspecting how the heatsinks were contacting the processors, I noticed that the GPU heatsink was bowed slightly, indicating I had possibly tightened it down too much. I loosened the GPU screws, and it worked perfectly. No freezes or red lights yet.
-
Hi friends, done lawdogs method, worked great BUT no its keeps rrod I then do the LLAMA bake method and it comes back to life. 2 days laters it will rrod again?, IF i do the llama bake it will come back to life again?, does anyone have any ideas why please???
-
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine. Replaced X-clamp and did a llama bake
-
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Used RBJtech's method. Still got the 3 red lights to begin with and error code 0002. Thought the motherboard was short circuiting but it turns out that when I loosened the screws on the CPU slightly the RRoD went away and the xbox booted up.
Everything seems to be running fine now.
-
wow this is still counting strong

please add for me another 34 consoles all perfectly 100% and 3 that still lock up from time to time =D
-
2 Fixed Now with no issues! They both work like a champ.
-
Fixed mine a few days ago with the lawdawg method (6-2006 box with tons of hours on it).. THANKS!
-
Hi, I was wondering... I did the x-clamp fix on my 360, i did everything...I plugged it in and the lights went green:) But after playing a while, I took the case apart so i Can attach the final screws, but the heetsinks where so damn hot, but I put the fan the right way! Are they supposed to get so hot? thx
-
I used lawdawgs method. Had to wrap the xbox in a towel though for about 15 minutes. Still worked and am greatly satisfied. Haven't had any problems since and it has been about two weeks now.
-
well today I finally got my parts for my attempt to fix my RRoD. I followed lawdawg guide to the tooth and am happy to report great success!
Ran mass effect (the game that it died on) FLAWLESSLY, not a single hint of any glitching.
YAY just in time for GTA

Did RBJTech's fix on Monday, and it worked like a charm. First time turning on after the x-replacement didn't work, still gave me RROD. I Unplugged the fans and let it heat up in order to even the solder. Booted right up afterwards and has been going fine since. I got my 360 off ebay for 120 bucks with a controller. Got a real sweet deal thanks to RBJ! Thanks a ton, my friend!
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine
using lawdawg's technique
-
Fixed 3 RLOD worked fine but the fans were spinning insanely fast. I used Lawdawg's method.
Then someone told me that the cpu and the heat sink weren't getting proper contact so I took off a washer and it froze twice now back to 3 RLOD.
-
I just fixed my RROD console using Lawdawgs method. Been hammering on it for the last 6 hours, and its still going strong. No freezing either.
I used the parts list for Lowes, and the parts were perfect and easy to find, so thanks goes to the peeps who put in the time to list the part numbers.
Anyway, I cannot be more impressed by this method, as it was easy to do, and cost like $5. Thanks LawDawg!
EDIT: Original Error code was 0102.
-
hey guys, well i try the xclamp fix, and it didint work, it still lights up 3 red lights, wtf is going on? i tried the baking trick too, and NO the fan is not plug in, what it going on?
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Fixed my error code 0020 box! RBJTech's MK III Method Much
!
Did both the cpu and the gpu (added a shim,) on the first boot my code 0020 turned into a 0102.
The tutorial i was using said not to overheat the GPU but no matter how many times I rebooted it it was still
0102. So I overheated the GPU with the method from llamma.com for 10 min, let it cool for 15 and bingo!
Dashboard goodness
Its been going for 3 hours now 1 on dash, 1 sitting at GOW menu, and 1 playing GOW with no issues.
the exaust seems hotter then before but that could be just better cooling from the AS5 right?
I'll edit this post if it displays any probs, cheers.
-
"Did not fix the 3RLOD"...
Why do I have to be with the unluckiest here... oh boy... now I'm not only getting 3RROD but 1RROD also... what am I supposed to do? Any help is highly appreciated.
-
After roughly 2 solid years (mfr - 2006-02-05) of nearly issue free gaming my xbox finally rrod (0020) and died on the 27th.
Determined to have it working again before gta4, I used RBJtechs method, and spent all day with one of the worst hangovers ever and a fumingly angry mood working on it.
Had to use a shim on the gpu and three-penny tricks under the ram sinks, but its working now and ive been playing on it for about 15+ hours, almost constantly.
Add me to the success list!
Thanks for helping everyone out!
-
I need help. I live in Pakistan ans i just cant find Artic Silver thermal compound.. Or anything like that. I their any alternative
-
At first I started getting color distortion, and eventually no video output. Would give me all green, and I got a video signal after I closed up the ventilation to over heat it, but that only worked a couple days before the discoloration and no video came back. Power button was all green though.
Took it apart and put new thermal AS5 compound on th GPU and bent the X-clamp for added pressure. That worked for around an hour while still dissembled. After that it went to 3ROD error 0102.
After that I took both heatsinks off and used Lawdawg0931's method with some minor differences.
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
Ran the start screen from Crackdown for an hour. Played for another hour. Reassembled the console, put the hard drive back on and played the first level of Halo3. After that I played through the first level from RV2. Not a single issue.
Going to pick up GTAIV today and put it to the test with a long gaming session.
-
5. Fixed the RROD, but I now get two red lights 2 seconds in on startup.
Lawdawg's Mathod
I push power and the xbox logo comes up, then the fans start going really crazy fast them in stops and gives me the two red lights. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? Should I try the towel now, because when I did the step to overheat the nit to resolder the joints it only took 5 seconds for the red lights to come on. Any ideas?
Thanks
-
1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
So far. using Lawdawg's Mathod.
In the last post I had done the method but that just gave me the two red lights. So I was contemplating using the towel method but I decided not to. Instead I decided to redo it again but this time not use the metal washer. This seemed to do the trick. It all works now and I have had no problems so far. If anyone else ever has this problem with the two lights this is the way to fix it.
Thanks Everyone for all the help in this forum.

ok so i tried RBJ's method and it didnt work for me
i was never all that confident that the washers i had used for the motherboard standoff spacing where the right hieght, it looked ok but still. it still rod'd so as in the tutorial i thought go back and try again from scratch. Upon stripping the box down i discovered the washers on the topside of the board for the gpu gave too big a space even though i measured them on the board by eye with a magnifying glass and they looked ok.
So now i am going to try lawdawg's method because as i have stated im not confident about the standoff spacing's my washers are giving and his method doesnt rely on this factor. wish me luck
i'll add my results later when i have done it again

My 360 would run for a few minutes if that then freeze! I was getting so frustrated. I work in a computer store repairing Laptops the majority of the time so I didn't figure this would be that bad. Truth be told it was not bad at all and THIS REALLY WORKS!!!
Thanks a ton!
-
Initially fixed my box last year with the MKI method, and it worked for about a week. Got the 3rlod and re-applying the x-clamp mod wouldn't fix it no matter what.
I waited a while until I could find something to make a shim out of, and re-applied it with the Llama bake method.
Works flawlessly now after a month with some new Talismoon fans in place of the stock ones.
-
1: Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.
This was a launch console that had been in a retail environment for 6 months prior to my acquiring it due to a store closing, so it had been on 24 hours a day for 6 months. It ran fine up until a few weeks ago. Then the console went down the week before GTA IV was released.
It took me about 3 hours, total, using tools I already have. I only used 2 washers underneath the board instead of 3. It's been working fine, averaging 4 - 8 hours of play per day since then. (Which is about what it was getting prior to crashing - this was a non-returnable console, so I had to fix it myself.)
Using some kind of adhesive cleaner on the chips is the only way to go. It was SO gunked up in there I'm amazed the thing lasted this long.
Llama method, primarily, X clamp replacement.
(Same as May, just joined to post results.)
-
used RBJtech MKIII mod. worked the few times i played the 360 in 3months. but now back to the 360 freezing and after a few reboots 3RLOD returns. havent trouble shhoted for secondary codesor bothered with it much for that matter. for a cheap fix im not complaining.
-
OMG! It works!
At first I figured, "This is stupid, it isn't going to work." But at the cost of about $5 for the parts and $10 for the Arctic Silver, I had nothing to lose except $15.
In the end my 360 works again. This is amazing.
I used Lawdawg's Method.
-
I was able to fix one of two using the xclamp method. MIND YOU, I had to do the 1 penny per ram chip fix because the board would not bend the right way.
The biggest thing I found with this fix is that it is really revealing the XBOX 360's design flaws. The motherboard warp and the GPU's seating into its socket is seriously compromized by the slightest movements.
Once you can get the xbox to boot, getting it to NOT overheat is tough. You have to adjust the screws as the XBOX 360 is on and playing a videogame. I used 2 stools to sit the xbox motherboard with everything plugged in, and adjusted the screws and listened for the fans to not run so damn fast. Once it sounded normal and silent, i left the screws the way they were and repeated the same thing with the case screws. Adding the black screws for the CPU xclamp (which i did not remove) caused the GPU to come out of its socket, and gave immediate overheating. Just using the silver screws slowly one at a time while the xbox was running allowed me to make sure i was not stressing the board.
Now everything works great after everything is put back together, the fans are running slowly and i have been able to play many games for hours.
NOW the other xbox? it cannot boot, it will not boot, I've repeated the same procedure, and i have tried to cook it for 4 minutes, while keeping the CPU nice and cool. It does not work. The towel trick was tried by my friend several times with this unit, while the other had only been done once with a towel for 10 minutes. TOWEL TRICK IS BAD, DO NOT USE IT!
-
I've looked over both methods and researched everything i could on the 3RLOD. I decided to keep the x-clamps. i made the decision after receiving my 360 back for the 4th time and continuous searching for a correct repair. xbox kept sending it back in worse cosmetic shape and messed up dvd drive and fans. I replacedthe metal spacers between the heatsinks and the mainboard on both ends with nylon spacers of the same thickness. I removed the heatsinks to clean (all that cheap crap microsoft calls thermal paste) with some computer thermal paste. *Did anyone have any aluminum squares between the heatsink and the processors? I ask because mine had some.*
I replaced my stock fans with the Talismoon Whisper Max fans and they are amazing (not using the l.e.d option). Since my 360 was an attempted fix by the xbox repair team if you can even call them that after the way mine came back multiple times.
This last time it came back it had new fans/new heatsink extending from GPU/new dvd drive. After taking close inspection of the mainboard with everything off i was looking at photos online of the different boards and it looks like they replaced my board with an Elite board but without hdmi support which is very strange to me.
I was out a system from Nov. 14th 2007 to April 9th 2008. VERY EFFING SAD. (Got new wireless controller and PGR3...."ALREADY OWNED IT!!!")
My console was in working condition till the other day - May 6th, 2008 - Until I got the 3RLOD AGAIN. So I did my investigating and found that so many people have sent in there consoles and they come back with problems.
If anyone is looking at any other internal parts i would strongly recommend the whisper max fans just because they move so much air in the system and keep everything ok.
I have yet to come across a problem with mine since i did the mock-up on the 7th which took me about an hour. i did the overheating but waited 15 minutes and then turned off the console and then back on after waiting 45 minutes. i have been timing the amount of time my console is on idle and running dvd's/games and it has ran for almost 31 hours total with 3 hours of idle dashboard time. Played gta for about 11 hrs straight.
As a side note. i have noticed that things load quicker. things being like dashboard applications like the side blade and applying themes.

Fixed 1 3RLOD - Freezes during gameplay ocasionlay.
X Clamp replacement did not help at all. Console started working after using pennies method to fix it.
-
Ive had my launch 360 in the closet for the last 6 months due to RROD and had bought a new 360, Well today I decided to try Lawdawg0931's method and it worked flawless, I did everything as described including the overheat step and all went as planned, I got all the parts at Lowe's using the supplied part #'s in the tutorial, The 360 has been on all day without any issues or freezes.
Thanks a million. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Xenon (Release date console) was RRoD for a few years - Used a kit purchased from llamma (and followed their directions) and it works perfect. Ran the console for 5 minutes (during overheating process), let sit, and now works. However, I do not know how long it will last as I have not played any games for a long period of time.
Falcon console purchased less than a year ago and already RRoD - Installed a kit in this one as well and it too works perfectly. I ran this one for about a minute before I stopped the overheating process and it works.
Both consoles play homebrew and store bought games flawlessly (besides the fact the laser is dying on the Xenon - MS28). Both kits installed in the consoles were bought at llamma (nuts & bolts). Bought 4 kits and cost me $25. Both consoles were turned off as soon as they showed they were in working condition & can play games; HB or store bought. As of now, they still haven't been on for more than 5-10 minutes so lets hope they last. I would recommend this fix to anyone who has had a RRoD problem (and lost their warranty). BTW, my falcon died while just sitting there turned on (360 dashboard) and a game wasn't even in the console.
+2 to the list (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

OK. did it last night. After installing it I turned it on and imediately got 3 lights, i was kind of pissed but I shut it off, installed the hard drive and it worked fine. I played 20 min game of NHL09. turned it off put the case back together and played Hockey for another hr then left it on for a total of 3 hours and it seems to be ok. I am not quite sold because I don't know why it 3RLOD. Like I said I fixed the original 3RLOD 1/2 yrs ago and it was running fine since then.

Did it a couple weeks ago.

NEED HELP PLEASE!
Fixed my console about the beginning of last week. Worked fine other than a couple of overheating shutoffs which I tweaked into submission. Played a few multi hour sessions of COD4 over the next few days and then one of the next times I powered on the unit I got the original 3 lights back. I then gave the screws a small turn to tighten and it was enough to get it back on. This persisted for the next few days. Either had to tighten or loosen to get it to work nearly every time I wanted to play, no big deal but kinda annoying... just a small turn of the driver. Then this last weekend just turning the screws didn't seem to work anymore. What to do, what to do??? So I removed the fan shroud and placed the fans over the one heatsink and atop the diskdrive so the processor under the disc drive could overheat. Thought maybe baking it again would help and it did. After roughly 10 minutes of baking and 30 minutes of cooling down it powered on with no problems after plugging it back in. That was Saturday night. Played it last night no problems. Turned it on this morning and BOOM... 3 lights...WTF??
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Plus One for Rickets!!

Question: Is there a serial number on mainboards?
-
Nevermind, there is a serial number on mobos.
Question: Why can I only edit my post sometimes and not all the time?

Used: Improved X-clamp Replacement (written by Wilhelm_I)
Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine although it's only been running for an hour.
I had error code 0020. I had to use only nylon washer and no metal one on 2 screws of the GPU radiator because they were slightly oversized.
Edit:
PS. I had to bake it for 5 mins [my room is cold as fuck] and then I had a green lights instead of red ones;)

Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine.
I sent this console into ms and they wouldn't fix it because I wasn't the original owner. It also got damaged on return shipping, so I had to replace the case and rf board. I'm out $35 but.......
All in all, I'm just happy it's working.

you guys think this would fix my box? here's my story..
error code 0020
used the youtube "penny" fix with 4 stacks of 3 pennies.. at first it was worse... fans would just start to spin, then it would quit and error out
played around with it a little.. loosened the screws on the x clamps and actually removed one screw. works fine now. if i put that screw back in the x clamp it stops working again

Ok having some issues...
replaced x clamps, turned on and worked fine..built up and lasted an hour...
so I heat gunned it and built it back up,switched on and it worked...built it up and it stopped working again...
so I have heat gunned it again but I can't get rid of the ROD,I have left it on for 20 mins showing 3 re dlights and the console never over heats, even with the fan's un plugged?
any help?
