I am a long time reader so don't let my post count make you disregard the following. I am at a loss. First some background info. I bought my box on eBay for around 200. The listing said the console worked perfectly and already had Thermal compound on the heat sinks. I was slightly concerned that because the console had been opened i really had not way of knowing exactly what had been done to the insides. Anyway, i bought the console because it was at a decent price and as it was in the mail the seller decided to slip in that the dvd drive (Hitachi 47 DH) had already been modified (Maximus-Garyopa Hitachi-LG Xtreme v2.3 Stealth 8in1 Revision2). I was a little pissed as this isn't really allowed on ebay. So i eventually got the console in the mail and this is where the real strangeness begins.
I loaded up a backup of Dead Rising. I played for around 5 min to make sure everything worked alright, then went to gamestop for a used mem card. Got home poped in the mem card and was all ready to play. Played for like 2 min, then the screen froze. My heart stopped. Rebooted, same thing slightly different place. Tried another backup, froze. Original...froze. I was pissed. So i figured the only thing i could do was revert to original firmware. I did so. No Luck. Thought, hey mabey its the dvd drive, but didnt want to put down the cash without exhausting my options.
Popped open the dvd drive and did the laser pot tweak. Was all excited that i did it perfectly and put dvd back together. Plugged the drive back into the console, and boom 3 red lights. rebooted a couple of times then removed the player. Made sure i put the drive back correctly and realized that i put 2 of the 6 screws holding the drive together in the wrong holes. NOW I KNOW THIS SOUNDS STUPID, BUT when i switched the screws the console booted back up. Now i placed in the first disc i could find, which happened to be Splinter Cell Double Agent BACKUP, and presto it booted on THE ORIGINAL FIRMWARE.
Now the first thing that went through my mind, was WTF. Then i figured that if it was booting i might as well play. So about 3 min in, the thing froze like it did originally.
Before posting here and making my self look stupid, i hooked the drive back up to my computer (i have the 360 USB connector and Xecuter Connection kit) and made sure 100% that the original firmware not modded, was flashed to the drive. Put her back together and same thing. So to my more intellegent xbox users WTF.
I now have a rather useless UNMODDED xbox that boots backups but freezes. Any Ideas.

The freezing and then 3RLOD are from the solder joints on the GPU/CPU, has nothing to do with the drive or the FW on it, so you have a 360 that's on it's way out unless ya take some steps to fix it or at least slow it down before it throws the 3RLOD and stays that way.
The DVD drive is a bit strange though. How exactly did yo go about putting the original FW back on it if you didn't have it? Did that come with the 360 also? or was it a backup of another 47DH FW that was used?

Thanks for the reply. I figured the box is on the way out, and im probably going to try this soon: http://www.oareplay.com/xbox/Site/Last%20Roll.html
As for how i restored the drive i followed this:

Yeah you'll need to do some type of "fix" to get the thing going again, but nothing is 100% proven to work all the time though yet, so pick what ya do to it carefully as to not tank it any further.
Forgot about the Maximus-Garyopa_XTRM not needing a backup to restore the FW, so that's even more odd now. I'm moving this to the Technical DVD-ROM forum where ya might get a lot better answer to this part of it.

If anyone has any ideas, im all ears thx

Non Technical hacking post in wrong section. This is a hardware issue.

Apologies there, I moved it for the FW issue since he seemed to have the 3RLOD issue figured out and a plan for taking care of it.
@ scotttheman - Have a read aroud the forums for what ya wanna try for the freezing/3RLOD "fix", there are a heap of them now, some may work, some may not, it's really a 50/50 shot to see. Bracing the board and doing coolingmods if it works seems to be the better solution at the moment. Having the GPU/CPU reballed is still the only proper fix, but that's some extensive and expensive work to get into. As for the FW issue, try running the Restore.bat on it again and see what happens. I just tried it on my 59b with my orig.bin nowhere near it and it worked, undid the FW and back to original.

Hello.. My box was doing a similar thing a couple of days ago.. luckily enough the guy I bought it from was a really nice guy and offered to try a few fixes for me. As far as I am aware he did the following:-
Did the cardboard shroud mod;
Used a heat gun or something to sort the solder points;
Cleaned and re thermal pasted the CPU and GPU;
And lastly, he bought the Talismoon Whipser fan and installed it.
So far so good it seems, it appeared my problem was a heat problem.

Update2** So i figured after reading, that the only thing left to try would be the "eraser" trick. All other things have been exhausted (thermal paste already on cpu and gpu, replaced X clamps with M5 screws and some washers, reflashed drive to stock then back to modded, even tried heatgun) so i cut an eraser, the white hard kind, and placed it on the 4 ram chips on the bottom of the board. I cut the damn things perfectly. Now it started up i loaded up GOW and it froze (like usual) then went to 3 red light upon reboot. I was expecting this because in the post about the eraser trick, the poster says to let it 3 red light then towel trick for 10min, to let the board heat up and "reconnect" (who knows for sure whats really happening) the ram chips.
Anyway i did so, and then rebooted expecting to at least get back to the dashboard like i usually can, but OHNOES still 3 red light. I've spent the last 2 hrs trying to get the damn thing to boot, with no sucess, even tried all new erasers, cut just a bit higher in case it wasn't putting enough pressure on the board. So what do u think, broken?

the unit is dead dude i dont know how many ways you have to be told and i dont know how many time you yourself have to see it.its dead.you have 2 options.the heatgun/towel trick is bullshit, it doesnt work end of story, it doesnt work. 1)send it to ebay as a broken box1a)contact the seller and ask for a refund, explain to him that it has never worked. and that he sold you a bad 3602)there is a guy here in the 350 f/s/t section who claims to have a reballing machine and a 90% success rate of reballing 360's.he only charges 50 bucks plus return shipping... now i have yet to see anyone come back and say "he fixed my 360 omg!!" and a month later or 3 months later say "omg its still working!"but he does offer a 30day warranty. i have contacted the guy and he seems legit. so you can give a try if you like. but understand, a bga reballing machine is beyond expensive and i dont see how a normal person could have such a thing.unless the guy is just filthy rich and has access to one. but stop messing with the unit, and ebay it, send it to the guy here, and/or just go buy a new one.
