Title: Help - Xbox 360 Hangs

For the last few months my 360 has started to just hang.  No error messages are displayed and the ring of light is normal.

I can be 10 minutes into playing a game or 4 hours and it just locks solid with the last image stable on screen.

I have tried lots to fix this assuming it was heat related, including:

1. Replacing thermal paste on CPU and GPU with Arctic Silver 5.
2. Install Whisper fans.
3. Drilling holes in the top of the case and installing an additional XCM fan in front of the CPU.
4. Installing heatsinks on the GPU memory chips.
5. Sitting the console on a Laptop cooler.

All of these are now installed in/on the console so it shouldn't be heat related.

I'm running out of ideas and I am not even sure this is related to overheating since I don't get the red ring of light.  Also the console doesn't feel that hot when it happens.

This all started happening a month after I applied the Gary-OPA firmware to the Hitachi drive.  I don't remember it hanging before then.

If you have any ideas for something else I could try then please let me know.

The same has started happening to me as of late. They just hang, it's strange.

Also this is the beginning symptoms of the dreaded 3 rings of light.

Err... it was my post that stated the drive had been modded.

DarrenR only stated that his box had started locking too.

I should also state this has been happening for 4 months and so far no sign of the ROL problem.

Are you sure it's not your discs? Try it with an original game and see how long it takes to freeze.

if its just with backups its your media, hitachis are picky with what you feed them.

It happens on original as well as backups and to the exact same frequency.

I actually have about 20 originals, and I use those disks quite a lot.

For the disks I use Verbatim printable media and I have never had a disk error.  Its not crashing when reading the disks, but in the middle of levels.
