Title: Xbox 360 Power Supply
Post by: fodelement on February 08, 2007, 08:10:00 PM
My 360's power supply does not seem to work anymore. After shutting down the system one day the green/orange light on the 360's power supply decided to turn red. I thought it was the socket it was in so I changed sockets and it worked. So I unplugged it and gave it a day to cool down, then I plugged it back in to the socket that worked the next day and I played for about 3 hrs. shut it off, and it was red again. I know the cables are connected, the power supply is well ventilated and raised on a concrete surface. Does any one know why this is, or what I can do about it?

concrete is probably the worst place for a power supply.. it collects an extreme amount of dust... try cleaning out your power supply

Well I do not have an air duster at the moment, but I did what I could and it still did not work. The supply was not on the concrete surface the first time the light went red, but I guess this still could be the problem, I will get a duster and try again tomorrow. Any other ideas in the mean time?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

Check the fan is working in the PSU - can you feel a stream of warm air coming from the small vents in the PSU after 30 mins or so ?

Is the light red all the thime? Or only when you plug it into the 360? And have you tried the power supply on a different 360?

It happens once it is plugged in to the 360, I did not try another 360 but I moved my xbox 360 to a different outlet that is not ran on thee same circuit breaker as  where it was, and now to seems to be working, I think the circuit was to weak to handle as much as I had plugged in to it.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)  I will see tomorrow if the light is still orange in the morning.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Strange why nobody has mention warranty.  Is it still under warranty?

If it is just call M$ and they'll send you a new one.  I did and 4 days later I got a new one.  My original was the crapy 2 pin version.  They blow the heat out more by increasing the fan speed inside the power supply but if you've got good hearing you'll notice as it sucks in more air it makes a high pitched whistling sound.  Bloody anoying.  my new one is the 3 pin much quieter (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Which one do you have?

How you check which version of power supply you have?  Easy.  Just unplugged the power cord from the power brick and look at the connectors.

Regardless of which version you have though if its still under warranty M$ will give you a new one.  Just give em a call.

It may have been a 'dirty' supply - by that I mean noise on the line from a fridge, dimmer switch or something.

I'm not saying the 2 pin version has any problems.  I've had 4 different 2 pins power supplies and although they seem to push more air through, if you have hearing able to pickup high frequencies (like me) you can hear the whistle as the air is sucked in.  It drives you MAD  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)

Perhaps I should wear ear muffs  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
