Xbox 360 Cheap Wireless Solution: Use RoutersPosted by XanTium | January 31 00:27 EST |
| |
From expertfaqs.com:
It is a tradition amongst console manufacturers to complete system functionality through official accessories at prohibiting prices. Microsoft's XBOX360 isn't an exception, though we will teach you in this article how to bypass and cut the costs of getting the official wireless adapter.
It is worth noting beforehand that common USB Wireless Adapters won't work due to their nature, which requires drivers to function properly, and the XBOX360 only features drivers to its own official adapter.
But don't lose hope. The console does feature a standard Ethernet port in the back panel, and is compatible with virtually any network equipment in the store shelves. This gives us a wide array of choices but remember, our mission is to save money so getting overpriced "Network Gaming Adapters" doesn't really fit what we have in mind.
We will describe you in the following pages how you can wirelessly connect two routers in the same network, so that one can act as wireless adapter for the XBOX360 and being the other your regular main router.

Anyone with a bit of experience in networking knows how to set everything up using off-the-shelf components. A lot of people already did this with the Xbox.
Still, nice article.

Anyone with a brain buys a wireless bridge or an extra router instead of that crap Wi-Fi adapter, right?
-
Anyone got some recommendations for a good router(s) to buy? Also looking for a new modem too. Your recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks for posting this article, it helps.

And if you don't like eBay, just get your hands on a new WRT54GL. DD-WRT also supports that model. Do not get a new WRT54G.

All the new linksys routers support openwrt.
Their is a new micro version for the v5 and v6 versions. It has less features but all the ones anyone here would probably use.

Not true. V7 and V8 are now showing up in stores, and both DD-WRT and OpenWRT don't currently support them. DD-WRT also has micro versions for v5 and v6.

I thought the point with wireless was no wires, if you use a router you still need to use wires two of them as a matter of fact one for power and one for the the ethernet, Seems like a stupid solution, but I guess if you don't want long cables its a solution for that..

That is a link that deals with the discussion going on here if anyone is confused.
LOTS OF OPINION BELOW, READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.
I dont know, for me wireless is still a WIP and not a viable solution...yet. Its just not there yet.
Kind of like when we had ugly ass pixelated plasma tv's and DLP tv's that you swear you could find a pot of gold behind. They just weren't "there" yet, so I waited a couple of years until tech caught up to buy an HDTV. The price was better and so was the tech. When wireless tech can compete with wired, I'll go all out wireless.
Right now the only thing wireless in my house is a laptop and thats just so I can surf in bed if I want to.
I'd rather lay 200ft of cat6 throughout my house for the speed (which is what I did).
Do most of you use JUST wireless? Dont you find it limiting? Do you feel it while gaming?
-
A nice article, but to be honest. Outside the range of your average gamers technical ability. They should have maybe at least recommended some WDS routers, to use.
An easier method it to use your wireless PC/Laptop and bridge the connection. Which I have a detailed guide for on my site (in my profile). Obviously as long as you already have the wireless PC/Laptop and dont mind keeping it on. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Nice article, but a load of guff still. You are far better off just running a cable to your xbox from your router still, even today.
-
I just use the original Xbox wireless adaptor (uses ethernet port) which was selling cheap at US$40 :-)
-
I've used my Belkin wireless bridge to stream films to XBMC in my room for ages, flawlessly. But I much prefer my PC, 360 and 'main' Xbox to be wired for reliability, they are in close proximity so this is not a problem.
I would chose a Router/Wireless bridge over the USB adapter any day because I could use it on other appliances.

v2.3_sp2 in client bridge mode currently doesn't
support wpa2-psk, but only wpa2-psk mixed mode, so the AP has to be set
to mixed and not wpa2-only mode (it can be either AES or TKIP).
Successful setup of client bridge mode with WPA

I had no problems connecting my 360 to the internet using a second wireless router (Sweex Nitro), but could not get past the Strict NAT for xbox live use. This was after attempting port forwarding and DMZ solutions. So I just went for the official adapter.
i bet you a million dollars that it's because you didn't enable UPNP. a lot of new routers ship with a version of this and most versions are capable of xbox live without setting the dmz or ports servers on. but for some reason companies ship there routers with the setting OFF. to enable it go to the router interface, which is usually 192.168.2.1, 192.168.1.1 , 192.168.1.100. if those don't work check the box for the normal gateway address.

Like what others have said, get a cheap
Buffalo WHR-G54S, flash it with
DD-WRT and then set the router to "client bridge" mode. Has worked flawlessly for me.
Doesn't work yet with WPA2 though, and it has trouble with AES mode.
Successful setup of client bridge mode with WPA
this is what I do also, since I need wireless for my 360 as well as my original xbox running xbmc. the whr-g54s are great little routers when running dd-wrt. No issues whatsoever when playing on live wired vs wireless
-
I agree DD-WRT is the way to go if you wish to accomplish this, but if you dont own a DD-WRT router already then you will still have to spend the money to buy 2 wireless routers to achieve WDS. If this is the case buy 1 DD-WRT compatable router and setup a bridge, serves the same perpose. Stores in my area still have the Version 6 WRT54G in stock so this would be a cheaper solution for some.

My apartment building has 'free high speed internet' with encryption and I'm a college kid, what do I do? DD-WRT my Linksys WRT54g, then plug my server, PC, 360, and Xbox in to the bridged connection
FYI you wanna hardcode your IP's so you can FTP/RDC to connected devices
Also DD-WRT is nice (with the new build) for it will keep all local traffice within the router and not travel to the AP first thank god
The main reason for this is I didn't want to have to buy 2 WiFi PCI cards, 2 Adapters for both Xbox's. Saved ? ~ $100 -200 and now I can keep my LAN even more local.
-
My setup. Xbox in bedroom 1 wAP in AP client, Xbox in bedroom two wap in ap client. Wrt54gs in living room flashed with DDwRT runing xbox 360 and xbox. Main router in dining room flashed with Tomato. WDS connected to all. Have really no lag when on xbox live. All xboxes can play system link and run kai with script on main router, also all can stream movies using xbmc. 360 streams movies with tversity. All work flawlessly. The only thing is all security is set to WEP. Also have QOS setup on router where Xbox 360 gets the most bandwidth when connected to live.

Agreed.

I knew that back in 2005 and I don't even have a 360
. The thing that many people fail to realise is that the 360 official wireless adapter is capable of Wireless A, hence why it's expensive.
-
Easiest setup is with Dlink, I think cheapest also.
Use an AP2100 access point in repeater mode, and any dlink wireless router (624).
The Dlink router was $35 and the AP was $80
-
Choosing this path has the big plus of knowing that in a near future you won't need to buy another wireless adapter specific to the device you are connecting, provided it has an Ethernet port. Also you can connect both the 360 and original XBOX wirelessly to your main router in another room, and take advantage of XBL in both.
Is it a totally new thing? No. But the point of this article is to raise awareness to this cheaper and future-proof alternative.
I bet all those $ony fanboys never saw this coming with all their comparison charts and mediocre sales
-
Good article, even better replies. Wheels are turning. . .anyone out there bridge more than two? I'm thinking yes, but please confirm. Much better alternative than drywall repair.
-
I haven't had any problems with the MS wireless adapter for the 360
works just fine
no lag in gaming
-
I would personally prefer to use wired connection.. But since my ethernet port on the 360 is shot I'm using the wireless adaptor.. not to bad... Just expencive as hell

-
100% agree with Heet. Wireless just isn't there yet, I only use it for my "internet" laptop. For my Xbox's, I have wired too...
I totally agree with the T.V. thing too. While all the clowns where buying those first plasma TV's I was standing there saying "uh, but it looks like crap". Just in the last year or so have they got decent enough looking for me to start thinking about actually buying one...
I guess I can see the point in the "wireless" argument being that the little adapter hooks on the back and has no extra cables (power, ethernet, etc). But I much prefer a bridge, it's not like I would take my wireless gear out of the house anyway, so I don't care. And the bridge can be used for other devices at any time...
-
It's been how many years since the first xbox was marketed with that $100 wi-fi adapter..... come on now this doesnt even deserve a front page.... $100 = 2 Wi-Fi routers (most of which can be firm hacked to open the bridging if its not available on the lower priced models). Seriously, consumers that don't do the homework deserve the $100 price tag on the adapters put out by M$.
What's worse is companies have been getting one over on the lazy for many many years, and as long as those stay ignorant to exhausting all of their current resources, or alternate technology, they're gonna keep on doing it.. So here's to Microsoft for getting one over on the stupid once again!!

HELLO TO YOU ALL i used something less complicated and it's cheaper. If you can think back to when Logiitech came out with the PLAY LINK wireless connection. It used to cost 100 bucks, well it's only like 17 bucks on ebay. I've purchased it and my friends have as well. You have 2 boxes that send the signal to each other and works as a wired network. YOu plug one box to your router, and the other box to the 360. works up to 100ft. No lag, no connection issues everything you need is in the box, i'll post a link for the logitech page and also the items found on ebay. I'm using the linksys router WRT54GL . So there you go, for those of you who must have wireless like myself.

How bout adopting this mod for the 360 .
No need for the external cable, just solder internally to the points. via switch if you want to turn off the wireless.
Netgear WGE-111 Network Adapter

-
NOW THAT LOOKS AWESOME!
But is a re-ash of an original XBOX mod which leads me to the question, have you done it on the 360? How well does it fit? Where did you get the power from?
It still has the disadvantage of voiding both the 360 and adapter warranty, but in terms of slickness it even beats the Official Adapter!
Now I am thinking of doing one of those myself. It's a pity I never saw a Wireless Ethernet adapter *that* small in my region..
-
That is the actual rehash you mention (linked) , No I have not done it yet, but the mod should be a simple one.
-
I'm having problems viewing the article.
Would 45m be better than getting 2 wrt54g's for AUD70?

I was looking at the Linksys gaming adaptor, I googled the name to read some reviews and read that it could not support wireless networks with any type of security. Can anyone confirm this for me? I live in an area with multiple wireless networks and running my network un secure is not an option.
