Title: Hardrive Removed While Power On
Post by: Adventure-one on January 04, 2007, 07:39:00 PM
Would anyone know If you can damage the xbox 360 console by removing the hardrive when its powered on. (The external removable hardrive). What if itÂ’s done multiple times i.e. inserted or removed when the console is on. When its either removed or re-inserted the console powers down and then starts up again (reset) does this mean that there is a failsafe and that it cannot be damaged this way?

I phoned microsoft xbox 360 support who do not know the answer so if you guys know your one in a million (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Cheers

Sata is designed for Hot Swap but if the hard drive was spinning then it would damage the drive by potentially crashing the head into the disc before it got chance to park.

It's a 2.5" drive, so it's able to take more abuse than a standard 3.5" drive. It should be fine.

Thanks for the response but as the hardrive is more easier to replace than the console i wanted to know more specifically for the console, when the hardrive is removed while the console is on i notice the machine powers down and starts up (reset) is this a failsafe to protect the console? So even if you've removed the hardrive 5 times for example or put it back in nothing can happen to the machine?

Does anyone have a breif tech explaination as to what happens or why the console is safe or at risk?

I`d REALLY try not to remove it when the powers on personally. Why are you doing it ? The drive is physically locked to the 360 so can`t fall off. Also good point about the 2.5" laptop drive.
