Title: First There Was Sparks, And Now No Dvd Drive

I was hooking up my Hitachi Lg drive to my computer the other day using the xecuter connectivity kit v1.2, a process I have done multiple times in the past.  This time, as I'm trying to fit in the power connector from the kit to the dvd drive, sparks and fire(very small flame) shoot out from the connectivity kit circuit board.  After examining it, I noticed an entire trace had burned the red covering off on the backside of the circuit  board and part of that same trace completely burned of were one of the small holes were and made a break in the trace.  

I decided to resolder the gap that had formed to see if that was the only problem.  All LEDs were working and the device appeared to be working fine, but my computer still did not recognize the drive or allow the kit to eject the dvd drive.

Frustrated, I put the drive back in the xbox, and now the xbox will not recognize the drive.  I don't get any kind of error, the drive just doesn't function.  When I push open tray from the dashboard or the eject button, it says the tray is open, but it isn't.  Then I push close tray and it says reading and never stops "reading".

My questions:
Is my dvd drive totally gone? (took it apart, no noticable damage to any circuits)
If not, what do I do?
Is it safe to use the xecuter kit or should a new one be purchased?

Suggestion to Xecuter, put a power switch on the connectivity switch, this will allow the user to ensure that all plugs are seated correctly before powering on and prevent this from ever happening again.  I still love you guys!

or dont play with power plugs while computer is on

i would say this is an isolated incident nobody would know the extent of damage youve caused, no doubt the drive and kit should both be tossed after that!

Thanks for the advice, I realize that this could've been avoided and that was a dumb mistake, just wanted to see if the kit and drive were totally hosed or not.

Again, LIke he said it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell.

Answer me this. I wrecked my car, is it totalled?

 

 

Most likely both have problems. Here's the logic behind the rest of what I'm saying. Either part could be bad (dvd drive and/or kit). In this way hooking a good component up to a bad component can potentially damage the other. So trying a known good piece of equipment with a bad piece can render the good piece bad. So without knowing, I'd say replace them both to be safe.

 

We all do absent-minded things. It's things like this that remind us to be extra careful. Good luck.

I totally agree with you, replacing both the dvd drive and kit is definetly the way to go, I already ordered a new dvd drive.

Anyone have an xecuter connectivity kit that they don't need anymore and want to sell to me?
