Post by: 281R on September 24, 2006, 12:15:00 AM
I swapped a dvd drive in mine with a newer 360 and it will not read disk. It says please insert this game into a microsoft 360 console. Anyone else had this problem? both dvd drives same brand and made in 2005

Yes. Each DVD drive is locked to its motherboard so you do need to unlock it somehow so you can use it with a new drive. I'm not sure how to do it, but someone here does, can't remember who but I think this question has been asked before a couple of months ago.

I remember reading a post about somebody sending their console into M$ becasue teh dvd drive was broken. MS just replaced the dvd drive, and kept the same motherboard. So it is possible

You would need to extract the key from the firmware of the old drive, and inject it into the new one, overwriting the new one's firmware.   Needless to say, it's a somewhat risky and time-consuming process.
