I just fixed a 0021 error. It was NOT the drive.
The error was bad soldering af the southbridge. It was fixed by resoldering the southbridge, with a hot air gun.

Hey

I have the 0021 error and have tried everything possible with out voiding my warranty. I was wondering if it is possible to flash my Xbox 360 without having to void the warranty, apparently according to my friend who works in a gaming store says that there is a way to do so using the USB and some program that the store purchased to update the firmware for ppl that don't have internet and all this is done without voiding the warranty.
I would ask him what the program is called but he is out the country at the moment and i would like to know soon as possible, so just asking here first till he arrives back at work.

thanks

you cant flash a drive without voiding the warrenty, flashing the drive itself voids the warrenty, if you have a warrenty and an error why not just have MS fix it for free?

Ok two questions

1) Did the DVD drive fix work on an Xbox that has previously been working before with the flashed drive?
It seems like that fix would only fix a 0021 error happening immediately after a flash, not on a system that was running fine.

2) How do you resolder the Southbridge? Do you have to unsolder the chip off the board? How do you do this?

0021 error is destroying my life..

thanks in advance

I highly doubt that the error 0021 is a drive related error.

I got an xbox with an error of 0102, fixed it by bending the xclamps to give it more tension, but it still locked up while playing games, but no 3rod.

then i decided to just replace the xclamps with bolts, now i get 0021.

Seams like 0102 and 0021 are closely related, dealing with the GPU.

also i noticed that after the 0102 error the fans were running  very high

but now with the 0021 the fans ramp up slower, but still get very high.

Update, I'm not sure but i think a 0021 is a fatal hardware failure specific to the GPU, i closely examined the GPU and saw that it had hair lin cracks, this would explain the high temps im getting. though while working on fixing the problem i got a 0020.

i have come to the conclusion that the xbox 360 is the worst designed game console ever

I have to agree, to a point. It's more of poor execution than poor design. It's like building a beautiful mansion, but cutting corners left and right to save a few bucks.

Has anyone gotten any further with error 0021?

I bought an xbox on ebay with error 0102. This console has never been opened. So the DVD drive was never modified. I did the heat gun trick and changed the x-clamps (which has worked for me on several consoles) The error code changed to 0021. I unplugged the dvd drive and tried to boot but still error 0021. So my issue has nothing to do with the dvd drive.

I also did concentrate on the southbridge because I read this issue may have something to do with the I/O chipset. Does ANYONE have any solutions to this??? Thanks everyone.

for my brief 8mos work of repairing....  persistent 0021, and 0022's are pretty much fatal... non persistent ones (like 0110, 0103 then bounces back and forth betwee 0021/0022), will die pretty much soon anyway.

I got error 0021 today.
I can workaround it by holding the dvd tray open when I turn off the box,
and when I start it up again it works fine.

Edit: At first when I tried again with the tray closed I got the RROD again, but after playing a game and trying again no more RROD...

I already disconnected my drive and the 3 rrod persists..  Bravoexo, So in you opinion this error has a hard solution or doesnt have a solution at all , am i sure ?
I have that error too, and i was thinking if the x-clamps metod would fix my console ... Has anyone already tried ?

Well to clarify, the "heatgun fix" is getting confused here. In the past, people would use a heatgun to re-melt the gpu for a "temporary fix". The guy on page 1 of this thread stated he fixed error 0021 by applying heat with a heatgun to the southbridge chip. I know this for a fact is a permanent fix (assuming the x-clamp mod is applied). I actually inflicted error 0021 to two 360 consoles. I am emberassed, but I will explain to everybody how this happend to both of them.

First of all, BOTH consoles had originally been working fine with the x-clamp fix. However, on the first one, I put only two washers (instead of 3 like I should have) on each screw between the heatsink and gpu; I theorized that this caused the heatsink to apply too much pressure to the motherboard and disrupted the southbridge or gpu. On the 2nd 360, I forgot to put the 4 washers on each screw between the motherboard and the metal shell casing (I didn't eat breakfast or lunch that day, go figure). Again, the motherboard warped considerably by applying too much pressure as I screwed down the heatsinks to the cpu and gpu. Heatgunning BOTH gpu and southbridge on console #1 and just the southbridge on console #2 fixed both of them. Still running.

ps. The southbridge is the chip that says xbox 360 and has the silver background.

interesting... I am very confused. But first of all, i would like to ask, how long had you fixed the console, to say that the fix is permanent ?
Because i have the 0021, and i was thinking in buy the xecuter fix...because i have lots of hope in that team.
But if what you say is truth and if the Xecuter fix doesnt work, i will try your fix.. But with all washers , i think...  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

i cant believe xbox could have this many problems... they should have a class action even with the 3 yr warranty.

what will happen when the 3 yr warranty is up for hundreds of thousands of people....they wont know how to fix it themselves and it might cost extra to fix.

they should recall all old systems and start replacing each one that is modified.

Hi, just got Error 0021 this morning, re applied AS5 on gpu, overheated the console by unplugging fans, would still not work after like 2 hours of struggling to get it running back again, I was getting 2 lights after a while and the error is now 0011(cpu overheating), but after cooling off I was getting the 3 lights again...  So I left the fans on but blocked the back of the GPU heatsink with a piece of cardboard so taht it does not get any airflow but so that cpu does cool off... let it run for about 15 minutes... no overheating lights yet, I pushed a little on the Southbridge chip... still on the 3 lights.. so I shut it down, boot it right back up, guess what, Booted like a Champ!!, its been on for about an hour and a half now, playing forza motorsports in 1080i, still going strong, I hope this can help someone too, as I was sure my xbox was gone for good this time around!

btw x-clamp was already done in the past on this xbox also pieces of eraser on the ram chips underneat the board when I got 3rol about 6 months ago.. 2005 launch console

Edit: I think blocking the airflow to the gpu and letting the cpu still cool off is the key when trying to overheating it as you do not damage the cpu with too much heat while you heat off the gpu (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hi, I know its an old thread but oh well.

Just got a 360 elite to fix, owner tried towel trick a few times with limited success. had 3rlod. 0102. Did the m5 bolts with washers fix, 3 between mobo and case, 2 between mobo and heatsink (its worked great on two other consoles before). It seemed to fix it, but the fans were spinning real loud. (i never cleaned off the thermal pad). Cleaned up the gpu only, fans seemed more normal and things were ok again. started to play a game and now ive got another problem, the thing freezes and makes a loud static noise that scared the shit out of me, and dotted lines accross the screen. sometimes it happens on bootup on the 360 logo, sometimers i get ingame for a minute and it happens. I tried clamping down the scaler anna/hanna/ whatever it is chip with a 'c' clamp, and i got to play one race in forza 2 before the cpu overheated (the plastic shield wouldnt fit in there with the c clamp ion the way so the thing overheated with limited airflow).

now getting to the point of 0021.....

I have wireless controllers and the usb recharger kit that plug into th etop of the controller. works fine in my xbox 360. when i plug it into this one, instant 3rlod 0021, wtf? unplug it and reboot, works fine. boot and plug it in while on, instant freeze of whatever the 360 is doing. the dvd drive still opens and closes but no responce from the controller or nothing. I tried all 3 usb ports same thing happend. then I tried plugging in my 2gb usb flash drive, nothing happend turned on fine.

so as long as youre using wirless controllers on this guy and you clamp down the stupid chip in back it works fine, but this is still annoying.

any ideas?

Thanks,

- Dave

thanks for the idea, those arent problematic for me though. I figured since the console works normally but only gives 0021 when i plug in the usb play n charge for the wireless controller. (i did get it from china? but works fine on other non hdmi console...)

I did find out that clamping down somewhat hard on the southbridge chip gave me an immediate 0020 error, which strangely is listed as "GPU Malfunction, similar to error 0102".... unclamping brings it straight back to life.

Also after that clamping once of the scaler chip and now having the southbridge moderately clamped, I just did a few races in forza 2 for about half hour with no crash, fans have been whining loud since the get-go though, probably cause I never cleaned the cpu heatsink only the gpu (before i cleaned the gpu one i still had 0102).

now testing with the southbridge back unclamped...

seems okay after another half hour or so of playing... gonna clean off the cpu heatsink as a final touch and put everything back together and see if it holds up!

hey i know this thread probably died along time ago, but i currently have the 0021 error, iv got the xclamp fix, and i've overheated the GPU and am still getting t
he error, i know from reading this thread it says its to do with the DVD/Southbridge chip

i bought the xbox of a friend for £5 with the entention of fixing it,
however he had opend it up himself to play around with it my guess is,
he seems to damaged the board when trying to remove the xclamps,
i've got some high res pictures below showing the damage,
do you think this damage could be effecting the console and causing this error? its just off the GPU.

Don't waste your time on it.

Too much damage. Even I would not brother, you need to track out each one of the traces,
and check to see if broken, and then run a new wire from end to end to fix the link.

I done boards with clearly one or two broken traces, but this one has at least five or more.

The problem is I have found even with the traces fixed, the GPU or CPU may be damaged,
as have one of the traces damaged, or sometimes push onto the next trace causing a short,
and then applying power before fixing the damage will cause the GPU/CPU to go crazy and burn out.

Here is the area you need to work on if you willing to waste a week of manpower:

Yeah I have a couple of these, havn't spent too much time on them, tried reflow, southy heatup and also looking for some obvious issues in connectivity, no luck. I think the 0021 error is more generic then most people think and covers problems from DVD sync to contacts on south-bridge. I do wish someone had some more input but atm I'm out of ideas.

0021 is a pain to fix, usually happens after a failed reflow or shitty xclamp fix.Its a bridged solder joint in most cases only repairable by reballing sb or gpu,i think often it would be 2 solder joints under the gpu that lead to the sb caused by flexing and too much pressure on the gpu.
Who of you guys that got 0021 had the xclamp fix done?I`ve never seen it on a virgin console.

I just started diagnosing my xbox tonight, and I'm getting error 0021.  The box has never been opened and everything on it is still the same as the day we got it (except for the error).  Any ideas as to what might be causing it?  It's no longer under warranty, so I'm gonna tear it open tomorrow and start playing with it's guts.

Thanks!

The problem most commonly is GPU. Apply x-clamp fix and reflow the GPU. That would fix yoru problem, for now.

a buddy gave me 2 xbox units over the summer, both older units one hdmi and one non-hdmi.
I removed the x-clamps on both and put in the washers-bolts, cleaned up the heatsinks and chip dies then AS5 and sinched down lightly.

one of the consoles worked right away, the other one was problematic and took me about an hour of finding the right pressure on the GPU.... now I can't remember which one was the problem board but I just got the HDMI xbox back last week and opened it up to find 2 of the capacitors ripped out of the board.  one was rolling around in the case and the other one missing entirely!

ordered some capacitors of the same size & rating off digi-key.

they came in 2 days, quick, I heated up the solder and pulled out the old broken legs then soldered in the new legs on both capacitors.  put the heatsinks back on like I always have, fired it up and red ring... 0021, great, I've tried varying the torque on the bolts holding down the gpu and cpu, tried overheating the unit, wait for a cooldown and try again, nothing.
noted that the dvd drive will not eject and I did find one of the dvd power cable wires had broke from its hold in spot though it still is getting proper connection to the drive.

also I did have to straighten out 3 or 4 pins on the DVD power connector motherboard side, I have no idea how they got ripped out.

all I know is I fixed this guys red ring and flashed his drive perfectly I tested everything played a game or 2 before I gave it back to him.  I don't know if he accidentally dropped it and that caused the drive cable & capacitors to break but I cannot explain the missing capacitor that was very odd.

took everything back apart and thought I didn't do a good job of soldering in one of the new capacitors so I re-soldered the legs.... put everything back together.... even flashed the latest LT+ to the benq drive..... still red ring.... still 0021 error flash code.

I'm about to get rid of this piece of junk or maybe sell for parts on ebay or this forum?

as an added note - when mine starts up just after I press the button but before it red rings, the dvd drive makes a short buzz noise as if its re-adjusting its insides, then it does it again real quick before it red rings..... horrible..... what if the dvd drive is messed up?
I mean, it doesn't want to eject at all.....

Today I had a customer's system come in which would not power on. The problem was that both the USB ports were damaged and the pins were shorting the unit. I moved the pins around just to get it to power on but RR0021 showed up. I then realized I missed one pin, once moving that it came on fine.

Not sure if that would help you since there was physical damage done to the system, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to check your USB ports.
