You may want to refer to this post made by BenS:

It seems some 360s have abismal cheap thermal compound on the CPU and GPU. In his guide he uses household cleaners to remove the old thermal compound... not recommended. Get yourself some Arcticlean.

There's your overheating smile.gif. Hopefully after cleaning the CPU/GPU cores and Heatsinks properly, and installing the arctic silver, everything will work properly. BTW, what is the manufacturing date on your system?

i'm so angry

i succeed in correcting my 2 red lights (overheating), when getting of the foil and changing thermal paste.
All be ok but today I've got 3 red light of death, with 0102 error no video on screen.
The GPU radiator is so damn hot!
When i get the radiator of, i get 2 red light error (overheating)

wtf could this error be?

Sorry to say but I think your 360 is now officially dead, you had the exact same problem I had with my first 360. I did a AC5 upgrade and found foil on my GPU and I even did the fan upgrade, that fixed my box for about 3 days after that I got error 0102 and my GPU heatsink got extremely hot ( I could not touch it for more than 3-5 sec.)

i didn't care what MS said about the Foil its crap even with that clay its crap and the heatsinks are a pair of jokes, the first thing i did when i opened my box is take off the CPU and gpu heatsinks, carefully picked off all that clay (with a razor then q-tip and alcohol), sanded them down (to 1500, my HW store doesn't have 2000 Bastards!) and put some Arctic silver 5 on, haven't had a problem with over heating since (except for the gpu, still burns my fingers to touch it), can you really fit a 120mm fan in there and get the case back on?

70 mm

the case will be with drive out, so no probleme to fit the fan for the moment.
I'm waiting for a watercooling mod, and a new 360 case.

I don't think you can get the case back on after that because the DVD drive sits right over the GPU heatsink.  With the fan it will be impossible to close and that would block all the air flow anyway.   That is why he has extended wires for the dvd connected to the motherboard.

I noticed in your video that a couple of fins on your CPUs heatsink are damaged. This may be contributing to the overheating.

I have a concern I also get freezing (no warranty) on my Xbox 360. The fans rev up like a damn airplane taking flight! The fans stay on a consistent high speed and loud to boot! Did any of you have this issue as well when your Xbox would over heat?

Hmmm you could carefully bend them with some tweezers... CAREFULLY! smile.gif Those fins are cheaply hooked onto eachother with metal tabs.

@Silverwolf38401

You may want to remove the two heatsinks and the old thermal paste and replace it with Arctic Silver 5. Also, make sure the 8 black screws on the underside of the case (located in the middle) are tightened. Those hold the HSs down snug.

Thanks for the advise! I just ordered some arctic clean and arctic silver I won't be playing with my xbox 360 till I get this done. Just to prevent any further damage to the GPU and CPU, since I haven't gotten any red rings yet (and I want to keep it that way).

It needs to be replaced with a thin layer of thermal compound.

The fans rapidly increasing in speed is not completely normal. However, it *IS* completely normal for a system that is overheating wink.gif.

As for the three lights error, try cooling your memory chips.

I kind of figured that! I got my Arctic cleaning solution and thermal compound today. So I'll be applying it today I also ordered a clear blue case and matching blue led fans (has better airflow). I'll be doing a complete over haul to my system soon.

That should probably do the trick. id throw some 'sinks on the memory chips for good measure. Don't forget about the 4 memory chips on the underside of the board! These are usually the troublesome ones since they recieve zero airflow.

Cleaned and applied Arctic silver I have been playing now for the past 2 hours and not one hiccup! Now I'm just waiting on the case and fans and I'll be a very happy camper.

I dunno about y'all but I'm not too happy with the configuration of the Engineering's placement of the gpu underneath the dvd drive.

Yeah, yeah , yeah, the sleek form and design is all asthetic eye pleasing form. On the Outside!

Functionality and focus on dependability in the engineers design in my 20/20 hindsight would of been nicer. But, alas we judge everything by its shape and skin instead.  sad.gif

I'm a big proponent of brand X my gamertag is mtsr, I bought the two year warranty. Looks like when it runs out I'll be doing some cooling mod. That is, if my 360 isn't refurbished beyond salvage.

One other thing, the manual states not to blow out the 360 with compressed air (may damage components), unlike the PC I can't open it up without voiding the wararanty to do so safely.

Getting a similar problem.  Moved house and my 360 started freezing after a few hours play.  Then it started freezing at the start of a game, and eventually 3 red rings with 0102.

The GPU is getting so incredibly hot, the heatsink can barely be touched.  This is some issue not related to cooling in my opinion, i have put some artic silver on, but the heatsink is roasting so obviously the heat transfer is working fine, it's either just not dissipating enough (imo unlikely) or for some reason the GPU is creating huge amounts more heat than it used to.

I would like to try slapping a fan on top like in the picture, would be nice to know where to hook the 12v to.

The only anomaly i have noticed is when cleaning the gpu, one of the small chips right next to the main cpu die had the thermal wax stuff down one side of it.  I tried to clean it off best i could but it is very difficult, presume the wax is not conductive but maybe it is causing some sort of a short? (stabbing in the dark here).

Thanks
