Sorry guys, the wireless adapter is basically an ethernet to wireless bridge and allows me to connect to xbox live/internet. When I read that the wireless controllers used 2.4ghz for comms I thought that they would talk to the system using the wireless network adapter provided by MS.
But if I understand correctly a basic core system will still function with a store bought M$ wireless controller?
well if it is a wirelelss bridge, then yes it will work fine.
im not 100% sure how the wireless controllers talk to the 360, whether or not they have a 'dongle' i dont know.
to those who have a 360: do the wireless controllers have a dongle that needs to be plugged into the xbox 360?

No...completely wireless. The "dongle" effectively is built into the console's architecture.
rasman2k, that's exactly right. Even the core is wireless ready...if you buy a wireless controller it will work.
