Title: Possible To Quiet Dvd Drive?
Post by: lcapitan on December 31, 2005, 11:19:00 PM
My DVD Drive isn't tooo loud while playing games, but is there anyway to possibly dampen the sound of the drive when a game disk is spinning? Thanks.

The answers are obvious.

1 No it cant be dampened.

2 Put it in a cabinet with a glass or wood door but take out the rear panel of the cabinet for ventilation.

3 Use earphones.

4 Wait for a mod to play off a HDD.

Unfortunately MS isnt going to release full games for download so you could play them off the HDD, that way there would be no noise, faster loading times, no scratched discs and no preordering or pollution from discs and driving to get them.

But they want to keep their retailers happy, its all about the money.

i haven't cracked mine open yet but i have something you could try to dampen it a little.  there are places where u can buy sound dampening material (usually for cars/car doors) that i think is made of viynal (sp) or asphalt (shit u not).  i think you can get it pretty thin too so if u open it up u can a) put is outside the sheilding between the case or cool.gif inside around the dvd drive.  again it may not fit as i havn't opened it and even if u do there may be some sound leakage throught the front and back of the drive.

yeah you should be able to get something. i know that you can use cork, that deadens sound pretty well.

so maybe it would be worth lookign around and seeing if you can get anything that is reasonably thin, so that you can fit it. and id be making sure that it isnt conductive first, dont wanna fry your xbox

i found the place where i saw it.  weird but this is the place i bought my optical cable for the 360 and was just fliping through the catalog they gave me and saw it so here are 2 links to thin dampening stuff:

AND HERE

well they both sound pretty damm good.

to anyone who wants to try, id be going the non-asphalt one, and sticking it between the sheilding and the case, all around the case.

if anyone has a go, please post how well it works

It is made of a mineral filled viscoelastic polymer that transforms vibrational energy into thermal energy (low level heat).

Uhhh, that's not looking too good to me.  Even low level heat added to the 360 can be a cause for concern, it could also dampen natural heat dispersion in the xbox.

i understand your concerns, but i highly doubt that it will have any impact at all on the 360, heat wise.

its low level heat, meaning only a few degrees centigrade. and its not speaker-like sound levels, which is what is is designed for.

if anything, the heat from the xbox will warm it up the most. but if you put it where i said, between the sheilding and the case, then it wont add to any heat problems (which only occur is the xbox is not ventilated properally).

i was gunna say that if u do it (i.e. wrap the xbox) drill/cut hole where the intakes are.  i think it wil be fine...if ur woried do the fan mod with it..u shoould still see less sound.

might want to edit  that again, that is not for silencing the dvd drive, that is to prevent the laser from scratching cds/dvds.

yeah, well it might quieten the drive, thats not what were talking about. were talking about the noise that is made by the drive when reading games, not scratching your discs.

READ next time look at the last paragraph at what it says. I did this to my 360 yesturday and i dont even hear anything from it. And i can also switch it to horizontal or vertical without it making any noise or scratching disks.

Did you have a loud drive before? Does it make playing game disks as silent as playing a dvd?
I tried it, but it's still as loud as before here while playing games...

yeah, thats what i thought would happen
