Ok, so I got the Play and Charge kit last night. I plugged it in shortly before going to bed. Yes, I plugged in the rechargeable battery into the controller.
I shut the 360 off by holding down the Xbox guide button, then Clicking shutdown. The green light on the powerbrick was still green, and the red light on the Play and Charge was still red.
In the morning, I woke up, the power brick light was orange/yellow (I just got 360 last night, but i assume that means its off, or not giving any juice, at least), and the light on the play and charge was off.
I turned the 360 on, and the light on the play and charge turned on again, but it was still red.
How do i set up the 360 to "Standby", or w/e it is i need to do to have the play and charge charge the controller when i'm not using the console?

Mine does exactly the same.
I've read that there are quite a few dodgy play & charge kits around.
I can't really tell if mine is or not. I plug it in for a charge, switch off x360, fans are still running and the power brick light is still green, the play & charge light is red, which is also correct. So I assume everything is fine and its charging it. But everytime I've done this the x360 shuts down at a random point. Maybe because its fully charged? Well sometimes not, I've checked by switching back on the unit, taking out the charge kit, and pressing the guide button, and noticed the battery icon on the dash isn't fully charged.
Yet one time I did try it, it was fully charged. So it looks like its hit or miss whether it wants to charge or not.

same happens to me, so I just leave it on completely to charge.

maybe not as it was intended, but i just plug my controllers into my pc before i go to work, my pc is up 24/7 365, charges just fine, hopefully add a few extra months to my 360's life
