The play and charge kit is just a dribble charger for the battery - it doesn't convert your controller into a wired device
Thats not entirely accurate. Thats why it's called the play and charge kit.

could someone with a wireless controller and a play and charge kit please download the ms drivers for the 360 controller and connect it (the wireless controller ) to a pc via the play and charge kit?
Doesn't work, in order to turn the power on in the controller it tries to start-up the console. This ( http://www.micro soft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/download.mspx - take space out of microsft to work as it's trying to send to ms.com which is morgan stanley
) is where I finally found the driver from MS, but it's only going to work for the wired version <> wireless controller + play and charge kit.

Ok I have tried every combination of things and this is how it works. The wireless controller will only work in wireless mode. The cable only has the ability to charge the controller. While it is plugged in it is still using the wireless connection to controll the system. You can plug the usb end of the play and charge kit into any usb hub to charge the controller (I used my computer since I'm still hunting for the 360 and it worked fine.) If you do not have a 360 the only way to turn the controller off is to pull the battery. With the system hitting the guide button (green logo one) you can shut off teh system, I guess the xbox 360 sends a signal to teh controller to shut off as well.
Downloading the XP drivers for the controller will only work if you have the wired version. You can not use the wireless controller on your computer as of this time. Here are 2 pictures the first shows what you get in the play and charge kit (wire and rechargable battery pack). The second shows the open controller as well as the battery compartment for AA or rechargable AA batteries.
