Title: Hdd Added To Core System Yields Error Code 67

I added a HDD to my core system last night.  I ensured that the console was powered off and unplugged before I popped in the drive.  On the initial boot, I got a single red light and an error code 67.  When I cycled the power, all was well.  I played Halo, Halo 2, Sega GT, and Forza Motorsport with no issues (aside from iffy framerates on the driving games).  I then popped in PGR3 and played with no problems.  I watched video, played Hexic, and ripped some music.  Everything was operating smoothly.

This morning, I turned on the 360 and it gave an error code 67 again.  In fact, if the console sits for more than 15 minutes, I get an error code 67 on the initial boot.  If I cycle the power, everything is fine.  When I remove the HDD, I get no error code.  After the HDD is attached, I get the error when I first boot the system.  Thereafter, no issues - unless I let it sit powered off for 15 minutes or more.

So, I believe the issue is in device discovery and validation.  It has me wondering if the process the 360 uses to validate the HDD as a genuine peripheral takes so long that the 360 bails into a hardware failure message.  OR, if the HDD takes too long to spin up before being validated that it causes the error.

Less likely is that it has something to do with the fact that I set up my user profile initially on the Memory Card.  I copied everything over to the HDD and formatted the Memory Card to check this.  On the second boot, it finds my profile and saves just fine.  The console still exhibits the error without the Memory Card inserted.

If anyone else has encountered this, I would like to hear about it...  especially if they have any solutions.  My intent is to exchange the HDD for another (if I can find one).  If this addresses the issue, I will post back here.

Customer Support Claims it means this exactly "Harddrive failure" so either you have a bad SATA port on your box; or your HDD is bad...Check it out and post it

dante, you are right - people seem be overreacting a bit.  For the record, my 360 has always been horizontal on a hard, flat surface in a well ventilated area.  I have had the power supply sitting on a small box with at least 3" of clearance around it.  My experience with the Xbox 360 has been fantastic up to the point I tried to add the HDD.  I am sure that I just got a bad one, is all.  (If my SATA controller is bad, I might be a little less forgiving!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) )

However, I do understand why people are skittish; $400+ is a lot of money to me.  I can't fathom the sinking feeling one would have to play for an hour or two and then *poof* - nothing.  I think that the sample of bad machines is much smaller than it appears to be at this time, simply because it is a news item.  Added to this is the fact that most gaming sites are not updating this holiday weekend, so there is no fresh news/counterspin available.

We will see in a week.  My suspicion is that the situation will seem about 100X less dire than it currently does.

Four of my friends got one from the same store..  My little cousin out west got one there.. While I think its funny that 4/5 of these experience the overheating while the powerpack sits on carpet or hardwood (I made sure to tell ppl to suspend everything off the floor) suspending the powerpack works in all cases except for one, which works if its suspended over an ice-cube tray, I'm not too concerned since a little ingenuity can solve heat issues (MS will probably sell a cooling accessory haha)..  2/5 of these units also have LOUD GRINDING dvd drives that can be heard in another room and kill the gaming experience in all but racing games where the sound compliments the engine well..

PS I can vouche for the overall intelligence of the 4 setups here, but my cousin is a dumb spoiled rich 13 year old who called me for help since I modded his xbox for him before..  Its fairly possible that only 3/5 from a single store have issues, but none the less I'm glad I didn't manage to get one..  I wouldn't feel right about jacking up the price and selling a crap machine, even if MS does..

i think one problem could be the mis handling of the systems, specially when there all from the same store...store clerks aren't always the brightest

Possibly that, or there are bad factories at this point in time..  Bad handling can't be blamed much on M$  really, but bad factories can be..  Dot the i's and cross the t's before screwing several million ppl over for $550..

My xbox 360 premium did the same thing this morning! I've had it for 5 days and this morning is the first time I've seen it happen

What i think is weird is the fact that for the european consoles launched. I didnt hear any messages about faulty xboxes displaying error messages...

could it be that this is already another revision.. ? My 360 was produced on 27 oktober 2005.

I have searched for europeans claiming to have a faulty 360, but i didnt find any. Doesnt mean there arent any, but it sure is a smaller percentage than the american boxes..

I returned the HDD to the store (they had no more).  A week ago I found one in a local Wal-Mart.  I am happy to say that it is working great!  No issues - just snapped it in and everything works.  So it would appear that I just happened to get a bad HDD after all.

The good thing is that they are showing up in stores again, so if you got stuck with a Core you can upgrade.  I do have to say that a Memory Card would be sufficient unless backward compatibility and game downloads are critical  to you.  Just my $.02.

I would try and exchange it wherever you bought it.  I too have a Core and bought an HDD for it but I left it plugged in while I popped the HDD in and it works fine.

EDIT: Looks like you already fixed it, I didn't read the whole thread.  I'm on drugs.
