Title: Recharging The Xbox360 Controllers
Post by: sniceguy on October 06, 2005, 01:24:00 PM
Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this question, because I havent been following up much on ultra detailed360 specs. Say the controller(s) run out of battery life and you plug it/them into the USB ports of the 360 and you shut the XBOX360 off; while the XBOX360 is off, do the controller's recharge? Or does the XBOX360 have to be on for them to recharge?

I am hoping that the machine can be off while the controllers recharge. I already know that you can recharge them while your playing if you have it wired into there.

That's a very good question... one that I don't think we'll know the answer to until either the console is released or some clever journalist thinks to ask about it during an interview.

i know most ppl dont have a lot o variations of chargers but if you have a peak detection charger im sure you could make a usb addaption for just two AA nicd cells.

I would think that given the iso standards of USB that ANY usb port will be able to charge it given the charge and play kit... even a usb powered up with no pc probably... or some dummy box to provide 5v on the usb line.  and just because specs don't require it doesn't MS won't do it... this might be basically what you were saying, I just wanted to clarify that.

btw, twisted those cheeseball comercials by duracell talking about who "depends" on their batteries in critical apps is really true.  Duracell's have proven themselves to be a slightly superior battery with most professional's I know (musicians, camera peeps and the oil field)  THe "Ultra" is a slightly better battery also... but for the money (ebay) procell's are awesome.  My buddy's band (gigs about 4 nights a week with lots of wireless gear) buys cases of these as opposed to paying 5x+ more for regular packaged ultra's.    This is just mine and lots of other's opinion, YMMV biggrin.gif beerchug.gif

This Is all I know so far

Play & Charge Kit and Rechargeable Battery Pack
The Play & Charge Kit allows the controller to be recharged while playing. Ample warning is provided when the end of battery life is nearing, allowing the gamer to connect the cable for recharging. The Play and Charge Kit also includes the rechargeable battery pack. This kit retails for $19.99 US (€19.99/£14.99/C$29.99). The rechargeable battery pack provides up to 25 hours of gameplay for wireless gaming and is used in place of the disposable AA batteries. Users can view the battery fuel gauge through the Xbox 360 dashboard. The battery pack retails for $11.99 US (€14.99/£9.99/C$14.99).

One thought is that it is "on" enough to recieve the Power signal from the controller so maybe it is... I mean really it almost doesn't make sense not to.

Oh and btw, Usually I'm the guy saying 3rd part stuff (grocery store katsup) is the same as the original and probably comes out of the same factory.

Thank you TwistedSymphony, I dunno what you guys understood from my question, maybe it wasnt clear enough. To simplify what I asked, can I recharge my xbox360 controllers via the xbox360 USB ports while the system is turned off?
Not with a regular battery charger that I have to remove the batteries from the controller and plug into a wall, I know that already. Sorry if this appears rude, its not my intention for it to, thats jus how it reads out in type.

I think that would be dumb... it's not hard to supply 5v on the usb port even if the rest of the console is off... pc's do it all day long.

I can say thats the first thing I am prolly going to mod on the 360.  The ability to charge while its off is a must. Evernight when your done with the controller, plug it in, go to bed.   Wake up next day and your ready to go. Whats the point of having a wireless controller when you have to have the play and charge kit on half the time your playing.

A regular powered USB Hub will provide power all the time!

I would've thought the X360 would keep the power on to the USB ports when it's off though, my PC does.

Since the 360 controllers are compatible with PC's, would it not be possible to use your PC to to charge the battery pack.  I leave my computer on 24/7.  I can't imagine leaving the 360 on after I'd done gaming to the late hours of the morning.

Guys the Xbox360 is able to be turned on buy the wireless controller and the dvd remotes meaning that it is never 100% powered off. My guess is that God, I mean MS would be smart enough to keep the usp ports power to charch there controllers. Come on they have console war to win, Give them some credit.

According to M$, "To connect the controller, you push the connect button on both the console, and the controller". To me, it seems like thats what you are going to be doing everytime you turn the console on.

In the sticky that twisted quoted it said 6-8 hours to charge.  I really doubt they are gonna make you leave your 360 on for that long just to charge the controllers.  I agree with Bogus8 they have to have thought of this.

Well think about it your xbox constantly remembers the time and then when you unplug it it forgets it.  You'll always have juice flowin through it.

The IR receiver would also have to be always powered on in order to receive the Power ON command from the remote control. So im sure the USB ports would always have power as well.
